Exhausted child and a strange smell

My daughter is 9 and for the last few days has just been absolutely shattered. Laying down in bed almost as soon as they get in from school. Bit of stomach ache going on, no diarrhoea or sickness, some blood in her poo. Not a huge amount. Off her food a little bit but is eating things like toast, fruit and yogurts. Generally just under the weather but the main thing that I have noticed is that she has an odd smell about her. After she has been for a poo it has a really odd smell to it and her breath does too - the same smell. Has anyone encountered this? I’m assuming it’s a version of a stomach bug but it’s the odd smell finding a bit unsettling. Any advice welcome, thank you.

Get her checked for diabetes asap

Muthaofcats · 15/01/2025 19:51

Weird you say this as I noticed the same about my daughter tonight! Has been extremely tired and apparently falling asleep at school but also just smells funny.

CheeseyOnionPie · 15/01/2025 19:52

Could be type 1 diabetes. Get her to doctor asap. Have them specifically test to rule it out.

Caerulea · 15/01/2025 19:52

I'd give 111 a ring tbh, it's an odd combination of symptoms & blood in poo always needs checking.

Caffeineneedednow · 15/01/2025 19:52

If the smell is sweet or smells like pears test for diabetes fast

crumblingschools · 15/01/2025 19:52

I was going to say check for diabetes, although that is normally a sweet smell

FadedRed · 15/01/2025 19:52

What is the odour like? If it’s like alcohol or pear drops, then you need to take her to A&E as she could have developed Type 1 diabetes, and this is an medical emergency.
Is she drinking and weeing more than normal?

Createausername1970 · 15/01/2025 19:53

I was going to say rule out diabetes too.

Anyotherdude · 15/01/2025 19:53

I third the diabetes check - especially if it smells like chemical pear drops…

CheesePlantFeet · 15/01/2025 19:54

Take her to the drs! If she smells sweet, I'd worry about diabetes. Blood in her poo needs checking by dr too

Get her checked for diabetes asap

Was my immediate thought on reading this.

Especially if it smells like fruity smell.

And by immediate - ring 111 as likely an a and e job.

Bizarred · 15/01/2025 19:56

The tiredness and the blood in poo combination is concerning. I'd call 111.

AFingerofFudge · 15/01/2025 19:56

Or (not to say it won't be diabetes, just giving you my view) it could be like DS1- when he was younger he would sometimes smell funny when he was ill (tonsillitis, a big, a cold). I would smell his illness too. It was weird, and didn't happen with the other 2 DC's.

Pointpoint · 15/01/2025 19:56

It’s a well known fact that mums can tell when their kids are coming down with some thing as they smell different. It’s odd but proven.

Providing shes not smelling sweet or like pear drops (signs of diabetes) see how she goes for a few days.

Based off the blood in her poo it might be worth speaking to the GP anyway and ruling a few things out. Is it bright red fresh blood or a darker red? The bright red is normally less of a worry

Whatzzitz · 15/01/2025 19:56

diabetes?

although she might just be coming down with an illness, children often smell different if unwell.

LuckysDadsHat · 15/01/2025 19:56

I would rule out diabetes, but some parents can just smell when there child or family member is sick. I csn always smell when my children or husband is sick or coming down with something.

CheesePlantFeet · 15/01/2025 19:56

Or would you describe it as a kind of yeasty, marmitey, musty smell?

TomatoSandwiches · 15/01/2025 19:58

Diabetes isn't always a sweet smell sometimes it's like an odd chemical/ammonia smell, has she been very thirsty?

itsgettingweird · 15/01/2025 19:58

Could also be gastro intestinal with bloody stool and smell - reflux smells too

MusicalDoc · 15/01/2025 19:58

Paediatric Doctor here. Exhaustion + strange smell to your child rings alarm bells for diabetes. Please have her blood sugars and ketones checked ASAP.

MissMoneyFairy · 15/01/2025 19:58

Check for diabetes and try and get a poo sample if her breath also smells pooey, is it a normal colour.

Crispynoodle · 15/01/2025 20:01

💯 you must take her to the GP urgently. If you can get a urine sample that would be good to take. She needs some bloods taken before a definite diagnosis. You can't really wait so tell your GP this is urgent, if you still can't get an appointment then ring urgent care

Supersimkin7 · 15/01/2025 20:02

Appendicitis makes you whiffy with lack of appetite too, but usually it hurts so watch for that.

Vinvertebrate · 15/01/2025 20:05

I can smell my son’s ear infections (frequent). It’s like a rat crawled into his ear and died. DH can’t smell it. 🤷🏻‍♀️
