Exhausted child and a strange smell

My daughter is 9 and for the last few days has just been absolutely shattered. Laying down in bed almost as soon as they get in from school. Bit of stomach ache going on, no diarrhoea or sickness, some blood in her poo. Not a huge amount. Off her food a little bit but is eating things like toast, fruit and yogurts. Generally just under the weather but the main thing that I have noticed is that she has an odd smell about her. After she has been for a poo it has a really odd smell to it and her breath does too - the same smell. Has anyone encountered this? I’m assuming it’s a version of a stomach bug but it’s the odd smell finding a bit unsettling. Any advice welcome, thank you.

Child should be checked out regardless.

ZigZagIntoTheBlue · 18/01/2025 21:42

My son has a dairy allergy and I can smell it on him when he's eaten something he shouldn't have - before he has the more obvious effects. It's like as his body is processing it, it tries to push it out his pores! I can definitely smell the difference in the bathroom when either of my kids have a poorly tummy, and notice it in myself when my crohn's flares up.

I hate to say this but as a child therapist, has she stayed with or been looked after by anyone else? Not to be melodramatic but those symptoms could also be linked to abuse but can often be overlooked as purely medical issues. Speaking from experience of multiple disclosures from children over the years and very much hoping this is not the case, of course more likely to be something else. Hope you get to the bottom of it quickly and get some peace of mind xxx

I would get her checked our asap, possibly for type 1 diabetes, get her to your GP or emergency room, and blood in faeces should not be ignored.

Rosered49 · 19/01/2025 14:36

Of course she would be worried. I can see where you are coming from as someone that has works for CAMHS myself but that sinario although possible is not helpful to someone that is very worried about her daughter. The symptoms could mean anythinh. Hopefulky we eill find out what it is or was in the end.

Get her to the doctors!!!

It astounds me that parents post on social platforms ‘my child is poorly and coming in from school exhausted’…… if your child is sick DON’T send them to school!!!!
As a parent of a child with type 1 diabetes, when my daughter catches bugs off kids at school they make her really sick, a stomach bug can hospitalise her!!….. sure send them in with a cold, but anything that’s making them feel this unwell.. KEEP THEM HOME!!
Blood in poo??- straight to doctors…. I wouldn’t hesitate to at least get a sample & get it tested.. doctors would see this as urgent!

Get her to the doctors!!!

Jesus wept. Its 6 days since the OP posted this. Do you really think she's still sat there pondering whether to seek medical advice or not?

Rosered49 · 21/01/2025 17:31

I hope we hear what the outcome was about the poor child.

Fluffydolittle · 21/01/2025 17:35

Doctors, now. Blood, stomach ache and a weird smell all need to be checked out.

madamweb · 21/01/2025 19:09

This thread is nearly a week old... I think it's a bit late for people to be telling op to take her child to the doctor's now!

onwardsupwardsandbeyond · 22/01/2025 08:36

I do wish people would not just read the headline but bother to read some of the messages. This thread is days old and, again, if people could be bothered to use 'see all', would know the OP has not responded yet to any of the posts or suggestions.

Hope all is ok, OP @BlueDinosaurs ?

LBFseBrom · 22/01/2025 08:42

I would think the op has taken her daughter to the doctor by now, or else all the symptoms have disappeared and everything back to normal, which does happen sometimes, especially if someone has had a bug. Let's hope all is well and that we'll be updated before long.

Ffs really??? The child is shattered, low appetite, ‘smells like diabetes’ and you scream child abuse?! 😡 Why do threads with poorly children often go off on a tangent to child abuse? 😡
