Exhausted child and a strange smell

My daughter is 9 and for the last few days has just been absolutely shattered. Laying down in bed almost as soon as they get in from school. Bit of stomach ache going on, no diarrhoea or sickness, some blood in her poo. Not a huge amount. Off her food a little bit but is eating things like toast, fruit and yogurts. Generally just under the weather but the main thing that I have noticed is that she has an odd smell about her. After she has been for a poo it has a really odd smell to it and her breath does too - the same smell. Has anyone encountered this? I’m assuming it’s a version of a stomach bug but it’s the odd smell finding a bit unsettling. Any advice welcome, thank you.

@ChicLilacSeal who put you in charge? Mumsnet can be a very useful place whilst you decide what to do. I’ve had a post on here running whilst also in parallel following nhs advice. It was very helpful - not so much for the medical knowledge but for the general support and understanding what others would do.

OK, and if it turns out to be a total emergency, and many precious minutes have been lost lost by posting on social media instead of calling 111, what then? In the time before a potential emergency there's a window where the person has a much better chance.

Medical advice first. Always. You can post after doing that. It's not fair to put helpless children more at risk by failing to call medical professionals as the number one priority.

My entire point was that medical help should be the FIRST action, not that she shouldn't post about it at all. I literally wrote MN should not be a substitute or a first port of call for medical advice. Get medical attention for your daughter asap, and then post.

I do wish people would READ!

Edited

I literally agreed with you. I said it’s no substitute. Maybe you should read what I wrote?

But I wasn't against the thread being posted, so I'm not sure why you told me what a good idea it was??

Chemical like acetone ( nail varnish remover)

MrsSkylerWhite · 17/01/2025 22:24

Blood in her poo and you’re asking here instead of calling 111?

Notgivenuphope · 17/01/2025 23:49

OP do update us when you can. We are all worried about your poor daughter and you. Hope she is feeling better and there was a simple explanation.

There is also a link between the covid vax and early onset diabetes.

ForeverLoveCeltic · 18/01/2025 03:37

"Refused diabetes test"? How in GOD'S name can a doctor justify this?

Bellyblueboy · 18/01/2025 07:38

Oh heavens - blood in her poo straight to the GP.

none of this ringing 111 or asking on the internet.

Source or it didn't happen.

purplehue · 18/01/2025 07:59

Maybe low iron?

I suspect you mean between Covid itself and early onset diabetes. It is thought that type one diabetes is often triggered after a viral infection (for those who have a genetic susceptibility). The same is true for other autoimmune diseases such as Crohn’s disease.

The link is thought to be between the covid virus and diabetes, not the covid vaccination. Please be careful spreading misinformation.

I understand that aggressive steroid treatment for Covid can trigger diabetes - steroid-induced diabetes (but yeah, the 'link' with vaccination is potentially dangerous misinformation)

Yes.

It's the swine flu vaccine and narcolepsy that has a link.

But yeah, COVID virus and childhood diabetes is linked, my friends sons endocrinologist told her that after he was diagnosed at 9.

vikingnorthutsiresouthutsire · 18/01/2025 13:09

I hope you're getting her checked out OP.

ForeverLoveCeltic · 18/01/2025 17:55

I will post the link re the vax & diabetes as soon as I get the chance.

People discussed with their close community, people don’t necessarily have that now, so they reach out to other people online to discuss.

Oh dear God it was just a joke. Why have so many people taken this post literally? Does anyone have a sense of humor anymore?

Yes - it’s Dexamethasone given for ‘covid’/pneumonia that can cause diabetes.

Pepperpot3862 · 18/01/2025 18:49

Diabetes check up asap

Rosered49 · 18/01/2025 18:58

I would get your daughter checked up at the doctors surgery. Explane to receptionist what you have wriiten here and say it is urgent. If you don't get anywhere ring 111 and explain to them. They will send you to walk in clinic usually with an appointment. If you can its a good idea to get a container from doctors surgery or a pharmacy with a stool sample. It could be anything.

Marieb19 · 18/01/2025 19:16

Get her to a doctor

LoyalShaker · 18/01/2025 19:25

I would definitely get her checked out. Call 111 for advice. The blood in her poo, exhaustion and strange smell all sound concerning. I really hope that you can get this sorted 🙏 wishing you all the best.
