Exhausted child and a strange smell

My daughter is 9 and for the last few days has just been absolutely shattered. Laying down in bed almost as soon as they get in from school. Bit of stomach ache going on, no diarrhoea or sickness, some blood in her poo. Not a huge amount. Off her food a little bit but is eating things like toast, fruit and yogurts. Generally just under the weather but the main thing that I have noticed is that she has an odd smell about her. After she has been for a poo it has a really odd smell to it and her breath does too - the same smell. Has anyone encountered this? I’m assuming it’s a version of a stomach bug but it’s the odd smell finding a bit unsettling. Any advice welcome, thank you.

Despite many already saying it, I didn’t want to read and not also say please get her checked for diabetes.
I remember one night going to bed and distinctly thinking my husband smelt different and I even said so - a few hours later came down with a gastro bug. My son also smelt different when he had a cold recently.

I can’t put my finger on the smell. It just smells odd. I remember my mum when I was younger saying my Grandad had a funny smell about him and it smelled like diabetes (she worked in a pharmacy so was a bit familiar with some ailments etc) and he did turn out to have it and it’s that smell that has hit a chord and what I think may smell familiar.

Not thirstier, just exhausted. Saying she is hungry all the time but yet not overly eating a huge amount.

I will read all the replies and assess. Will try and get a stool and urine sample. i will call 111 for advice and then go from there.

Thank you for your replies.

Please please plese bring her straight to A and E. She could be in DKA which is quite dangerous. They can rule it out very quickly but please please go. My child had no other symptoms except lethargy but especially the smell would make me worried.

3within3 · 15/01/2025 23:47

Another vote here for going straight to A&E. Even if she doesn’t appear that unwell right now. It can be really serious v quickly. I hope she’s ok

TipsyJoker · 16/01/2025 01:02

Any update op? How is she?

ChicLilacSeal · 16/01/2025 01:11

MN should not be a substitute or a first port of call for medical advice. Get medical attention for your daughter asap, and then post.

AlteredStater · 16/01/2025 02:06

Another possibility is the onset of Crohn's disease. I hope for her sake it's not.

GrazeConcern · 16/01/2025 05:54

@ChicLilacSeal who put you in charge? Mumsnet can be a very useful place whilst you decide what to do. I’ve had a post on here running whilst also in parallel following nhs advice. It was very helpful - not so much for the medical knowledge but for the general support and understanding what others would do.

Londonnight · 16/01/2025 07:26

My son has crohns. Before he was diagnosed his breath smelt vile. He also had stomach pains and completely exhausted the whole time. I would get a stool and blood samples done. You need to get her checked out ASAP.

Daisyblue2 · 16/01/2025 11:06

Any update? Is she ok?

Nomnomnew · 16/01/2025 12:45

Hope your daughter is okay OP.

@ChicLilacSeal of course it’s no substitute for proper medical advice, but I’m pleased OP posted this thread - I’d have had no idea the symptoms described could be indicative of diabetes, so I’ve learnt a lot from the thread and so might other people.

Same, despite my own mum getting diagnosed with T1 as an adult after going into DKA I'd no idea about the pear drops/acetone smell.

Hope OP's daughter is doing ok

WickWood · 16/01/2025 13:16

Glad you're getting her seen to, I echo what everyone else has said and would want to get diabetes ruled out x

MoonWoman69 · 16/01/2025 17:42

I can't understand you asking a random group of strangers on the internet rather than getting her to the doctors?!
If it had just happened, I could understand that, but it's been a few days!
Hope 111 can advise you.

Get her checked for diabetes, ASAP and compacted constipation can also cause all of these symptoms. The smelly breath is a huge sign of constipation. The smell of peardrops, or a nail varnish type smell can be diabetes.

I hope she's OK, OP.

Missingpop · 16/01/2025 18:14

Please take to your GP asap; I don’t mean to worry you but it’s possible she might have something is going on is she drinking excessively by any chance? It’s just the symptoms your describing are exactly the same as my friends little girl but she was also drinking like a fish quick trip to the GP ‘& she’s been diagnosed with diabetes which came as huge shock to everyone but everything is now under control & we have our gorgeous happy little seven year old back dancing around all the time x
I do hope your little one is ok & you get answers quickly xx

One sec

Child shitting blood and can't get out of bed and you're messing around trying to call 111?

Just go to a and e

Only after she's read and assessed all of the replies first.

You don't know that she's not seen a doctor or is in hospital but pages of it might be diabetes is ridiculous even with Cross posting, hope she's OK and maybe we'll get an update.

onwardsupwardsandbeyond · 16/01/2025 18:42

@BlueDinosaurs OP, could it possibly be that she's had an early period? Maybe she doesn't realise and thinks the blood came with the poo?

ZestyJoey · 16/01/2025 18:47

Normally the odd smells are the result of a parasitic or fungal infection... however there's a few people who have suggested possible type I diabetes, which explains the fatigue. Blood in stool could be any number of things but pretty much all of them are serious. Get a GP appointment ASAP and tell them every symptom, no matter how small.

God speed, OP. Hope your princess gets well soon :)

Pointpoint · 15/01/2025 19:56

It’s a well known fact that mums can tell when their kids are coming down with some thing as they smell different. It’s odd but proven.

Providing shes not smelling sweet or like pear drops (signs of diabetes) see how she goes for a few days.

Based off the blood in her poo it might be worth speaking to the GP anyway and ruling a few things out. Is it bright red fresh blood or a darker red? The bright red is normally less of a worry

Edited

I second this. DD smells poorly to me if she has a virus of some sort, not sweet just different but agree with other posters that if it's the pear drips smell you should ring 111

Oodiks · 16/01/2025 19:04

Looking for an update...

Peanutssuck · 16/01/2025 19:14

Haven't read through thread, but my DD had an odd smell for a while especially when on her period. Stomach pains as well. Diagnosed with Crohns

CheekyLemonHiker · 16/01/2025 19:14

Sounds like onset DKA. Get to hospital urgently, coming from a type 1 diabetic diagnosed at 6.

x

LunaTheCat · 16/01/2025 19:25

GP here… take her to drs asap.. if GP is closed than urgent care or ED… it is probably nothing but you need to exclude diabetes and severe infection.
