Waiting at the bus stop. It’s a covered shelter thing with a bar to sit on

A man comes in, sits down and immediately lights up and starts to smoke. Dd had to go out because she’s asthmatic and it sets her off.

As soon as he finished smoking….he went outside and started to walk around.

Im so bloody annoyed. I didn’t feel like I could say “I’m sorry can you not smoke around me” cos 1, it’s not my space, and 2 he looks the sort that would argue back and it’s another 10 mins till the bus, so really didn’t want to start anything.

Its mad how smoking has become so socially unacceptable and the slightest hint of it sets people off.

Noshowlomo · 31/12/2024 16:03

It’s disgusting. I hate walking through it. It makes me smell, cough (asthma too).
It should be socially unacceptable!

Kneeslikethese · 31/12/2024 16:04

I don't like smoking but you don't have the right to tell someone not to smoke outside.

Alalalala · 31/12/2024 16:04

It’s gross and he shouldn’t have smoked in a bus stop.

KimberleyClark · 31/12/2024 16:04

Smoking in bus shelters is selfish if there is someone else waiting.

it stinks, it's horrible, it's unsociable. What about smoking IS socially acceptable in your eyes?

WalterdelaMare · 31/12/2024 16:05

I loathe smoking. Some smokers are so selfish and don’t realise (or care) that they’re pariahs.

Melodyfair · 31/12/2024 16:06

I don’t like drinkers, does lots of harm but is acceptable, leave the smokers alone, they are demonised enough!

It's mad that something so antisocial and unhealthy was ever deemed to be socially acceptable.

Adm1010 · 31/12/2024 16:07

Disgusting and selfish

Noshowlomo · 31/12/2024 16:09

@Melodyfair why should they? The smoker didn’t leave them alone. Their actions directly affected the OP and her child. (And anyone else breathing air around him)

Raquelos · 31/12/2024 16:12

It's mad how people are so ready to get cross about cigarette smoke but not about exhaust fumes.

wholettheturnipsburn · 31/12/2024 16:15

Filthy habit but most smokers don't care about impacting on others

Missionimprobable · 31/12/2024 16:19

I smoke.
I wouldn't smoke in a bus shelter.
If I'm out and smoke, I do try to keep away from other people. For example, if im in town shopping, I stand to one side out of the way.
Tbh, smoking is absolutely antisocial but the vapes really bother me, I hate walking through a cloud of vape (not excusing my own smoking habit btw)

For good reason! Grow up and stop polluting the air and other people’s lungs

Noshowlomo · 31/12/2024 16:24

@Raquelos you’re right, we don’t pay enough attention to what exhaust fumes do to us, but at least cars serve a purpose, we’d be lost without cars, vans, buses, taxis etc. They keep the country running and the positives probably outweigh the benefits. There are no positives to smoking.

Ponderingwindow · 31/12/2024 16:25

Today I learned it isn’t illegal to smoke at bus stops in the UK.

reading this sight as an outsider is fascinating on occasion. It’s been illegal for so long, it didn’t even occur to me it wouldn’t be elsewhere.

Balancedcitizen101 · 31/12/2024 16:27

Most bus stops have a no smoking sign in them, or are meant to be no smoking areas. Would I confront someone? Probably not, just move away from them.

The £8.8 billion tax it generates. I don’t suppose you mind that too much or perhaps you’d like to pay more income tax?

I’m not a smoker, incidentally.

BrightSnail · 31/12/2024 16:27

I feel it's getting worse recently. Folk just wander the streets smoking weed openly around our way now, too. I've no moral objection to any of it - what you do and don't smoke does nothing to your worth in my book - but the smell really knocks me sick and I find it hangs in my clothes, too. I'm battling against the feeling that there's just a plague of selfishness at the moment. A covered bus shelter is an enclosed space. You'd hope any reasonably decent person would recognise that and refrain.

I’d happily pay a bit more tax if it meant my children and I never have to breathe in someone’s cigarette smoke again.

Seriously. Its a foul habit that makes you and everyone around you stink. Why do you think that's okay ?

‘New figures show smoking costs billions more than tobacco taxes as consultation on creating a smokefree generation closes.

Smoking costs England £49.2 billion each year in lost productivity and service costs, plus an additional £25.9 billion lost quality adjusted life years due to premature death from smoking.’

Taken from a press release by ash.org.uk last year.

Cherrysoup · 31/12/2024 16:43

Smoke away, couldn’t care less, but smoking inside a bus shelter when there are others present is epically shit. It should be illegal to smoke in any kind of covered area where there are others. I loathe having to walk through a cloud of secondhand smoke when I come out of most supermarkets too. Can’t they just wait til they’re home?

Yeah, because an anti smoking charity is always going to be entirely accurate and truthful. Premature death is a good thing, think of all the money it saves on pensions. Nearly £9 billion extra tax as well. Win/win.
