Aibu to be really annoyed by smoking man

Waiting at the bus stop. It’s a covered shelter thing with a bar to sit on

A man comes in, sits down and immediately lights up and starts to smoke. Dd had to go out because she’s asthmatic and it sets her off.

As soon as he finished smoking….he went outside and started to walk around.

Im so bloody annoyed. I didn’t feel like I could say “I’m sorry can you not smoke around me” cos 1, it’s not my space, and 2 he looks the sort that would argue back and it’s another 10 mins till the bus, so really didn’t want to start anything.

I also thought it was illegal as it's illegal to smoke on an open railway platform! Definitely NABU - I vape (used to smoke) and etiquette is always smoke/vape outside of the bus shelter if someone is in it

It’s not illegal to smoke on an open railway platform. It’s a Network Rail byelaw and there isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell of it ever achieving a prosecution.

It's mad how people are so ready to get cross about cigarette smoke but not about exhaust fumes.

Big difference is transport serves a purpose..

BeefyLips · 31/12/2024 16:01

Its mad how smoking has become so socially unacceptable and the slightest hint of it sets people off.

It's always been disgusting.

@Soubriquet why is drug taking not demonised like cigarette smoking??? majority of them end up on the streets begging for money but there are still very loads of "nice" people doing lines of cocaine at the weekends, either in their own homes or at clubs and many more ordinary people smoking cannabis which stinks to high heaven!!

Cos they don't stick a bit of their drugs into you when you breathe in

GivingitToGod · 31/12/2024 17:37

The smoker was smoking in a permitted space so I am unsure what the problem is. I am not a smoker but there are virtually nil outside allocated spaces for smokers. As for the comment about them looking the sort that will answer back???????????

Your lungs don’t know that.

BlueSilverCats · 31/12/2024 17:41

As far as I know , you aren't supposed to smoke in bus shelters, so yeah you could've told him to move.

Of course he could've sat right outside and blow his smoke at you if he was a twat, and nothing you can do about that.

monkeysox · 31/12/2024 17:43

BIossomtoes · 31/12/2024 17:41

No they don't. But as an asthmatic I've definitely reacted to cigarette smoke.

But not to traffic fumes? Really?

Melodyfair · 31/12/2024 16:06

I don’t like drinkers, does lots of harm but is acceptable, leave the smokers alone, they are demonised enough!

Drinkers aren’t making you drink their alcohol though. Smokers are making you breathe their smoke. Big difference.

Really. I don't live in a city but a large town.

BrightSnail · 31/12/2024 17:47

I confronted a bloke blasting his music on a train a few months ago. I got a mouthful of abuse and threats. I genuinely feared for my safety, and I'm by no means a timid person. In an ideal world a person could politely point out that another person's behaviour was making others uncomfortable/unsafe and the second person would alter their behaviour so that everyone could share the space fairly. Reality doesn't work like that. I often see folks on MN saying 'speak up' or 'use your words', but it's a bit of a naive sentiment, not least because a person who does speak up and gets leathered for their trouble will often get little sympathy from the 'you were asking for it/stay out of it/keep your mouth shut' brigade. You have my sympathy, OP, and I can understand why you didn't confront, especially if it was just you and your little one.

BIossomtoes · 31/12/2024 16:43

Yeah, because an anti smoking charity is always going to be entirely accurate and truthful. Premature death is a good thing, think of all the money it saves on pensions. Nearly £9 billion extra tax as well. Win/win.

Cigarette smoke is also a powerful anti fungal, and we're getting all these houses taken over by mould now. 🤔 I'm actually planning to burn a load of tobacco in my garage to stop my furniture going mouldy again as the pieces that came from my dad's flat (20 a day habit before he died) are the ones resisting the mould explosion we're trying to get under control.

SquaredShoulders · 31/12/2024 17:49

Smokers pay for their ‘additional’ cost to the NHS 3x over - and that’s if we believe that they wouldn’t need the same sort of care costs later in life. We all tend to get the same late life chronic/fatal conditions.

ASH are always scratting around to add costs to smoking, and the claims are often made on the odd basis that you can make discrete decisions about what a smoker vs non-smoker ‘costs’ in economic terms. But yes, it’s worth considering that smokers tend not to have long late life costs to society though, simply because they die a few years earlier than average, having paid for a couple of their fellow citizens’ ‘costs’ along the way.

As for the bus shelter, if it was more than 50% enclosed (ie back and 2 sides), it’s illegal to smoke in it.

BrightSnail · 31/12/2024 17:52

Think the tax/cost to the NHS thing is a red herring here. I don't get the impression OP particularly wants the man banned from the NHS, taxed more or publicly flogged. She just wants to wait for a bus without having smoke blown at her. I'm a bit baffled at how controversial that is.

SquaredShoulders · 31/12/2024 17:54

It got a bit derailed by people making false claims about smoking, I guess. I’d have smoked outside the shelter.

Cornflakes123 · 31/12/2024 17:55

wholettheturnipsburn · 31/12/2024 16:15

Filthy habit but most smokers don't care about impacting on others

Not true I used to smoke and wouldn’t have dreamed have doing this. I would have stayed clear of others. You just think this cos you are more likely to notice the ignorant ones.

soupfiend · 31/12/2024 17:58

I agree with you OP but what Im also noticing is that people are smoking weed everywhere and no one seems to care. Also vaping, disgusting the lot of it

UptoYou · 31/12/2024 17:59

Ponderingwindow · 31/12/2024 16:25

Today I learned it isn’t illegal to smoke at bus stops in the UK.

reading this sight as an outsider is fascinating on occasion. It’s been illegal for so long, it didn’t even occur to me it wouldn’t be elsewhere.

It's illegal to smoke in a bus stop in Scotland if it's 'wholly or substantially enclosed'

That boggles my mind more than anything else. Just casually walking round with a spliff in their mouths.

I don’t know how to answer that…

I was bothered by the smoking because my daughter has asthma and it triggers an attack. People doing drugs usually only harms their body. Them taking cocaine isn’t going to harm my daughter unless they flip out

This is what our bus shelter is like. There are two open panels that you can in and out of

Yeah, he’s not allowed to smoke in a bus shelter of that design.
