Waiting at the bus stop. It’s a covered shelter thing with a bar to sit on

A man comes in, sits down and immediately lights up and starts to smoke. Dd had to go out because she’s asthmatic and it sets her off.

As soon as he finished smoking….he went outside and started to walk around.

Im so bloody annoyed. I didn’t feel like I could say “I’m sorry can you not smoke around me” cos 1, it’s not my space, and 2 he looks the sort that would argue back and it’s another 10 mins till the bus, so really didn’t want to start anything.

It’s illegal to smoke inside covered bus shelters!

Yeah, because an anti smoking charity is always going to be entirely accurate and truthful. Premature death is a good thing, think of all the money it saves on pensions. Nearly £9 billion extra tax as well. Win/win.

I've just looked up the independent research. Smoking costs our economy, including the NHS, significantly more than it takes in taxes on tobacco products.

Nobody is winning when they smoke.

Boomer55 · 31/12/2024 16:50

It's legal and he was outside. Cars belching out fumes annoy me, but it's legal. It's a case of having to suck it up. 🤷‍♀️

It doesn't according to official sources.

Its mad how smoking has become so socially unacceptable and the slightest hint of it sets people off.

Mad?

Soubriquet · 31/12/2024 16:55

This is why I didn’t say anything. Like I said, it’s not really my business and my child moved outside. I couldn’t cos I really needed to sit and I’m disabled. I was just more annoyed by the fact he smoked in the shelter, then got up and walked around after he had finished (and threw the butt on the ground). I just thought, why couldn’t he have walked around whilst smoking and then sat down

Gah, I thought this was going to be an X-Files thread!

I don’t like drinkers, does lots of harm but is acceptable, leave the smokers alone, they are demonised enough!

But smoking where you shouldn't - at bus stops - injures people. whereas drinking only affects the person drinking, no-one else

pinkroses79 · 31/12/2024 16:57

He should have left the shelter rather than your daughter having to. It wasn't at all respectful. I probably wouldn't have got hugely worked up about it though.

MsPug · 31/12/2024 16:58

I prefer cigarette smoke to vape smoke

It's illegal to smoke in public places including bus shelters. OP had every right to be annoyed.

BobbyBiscuits · 31/12/2024 17:00

It's very antisocial. I don't really smoke much now outside, but do vape. If I was smoking or vaping waiting for a bus I'd stand outside of the shelter as far from others as possible.
But next time you really should just politely say 'would you mind moving away as we have asthma.' the worst they can do is refuse/ignore but I'd say most people would do so when asked. They're just being selfish and need a nudge to remind them of others.

Raquelos · 31/12/2024 16:12

It's mad how people are so ready to get cross about cigarette smoke but not about exhaust fumes.

Yep, and pollution in general. To say nothing of whatever crap they put in our food. Smokers have been allowed to become addicted. It's a legal drug that has netted the UK Government billions and, up until recently, they've all been very happy about it.

Drinking where you shouldn’t, say behind the wheel of a car would definitely harm other people, or in front of your kids leading to mentally scarring behaviour, the list could be pretty endless really!

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 31/12/2024 17:05

Whether it's illegal or not in a covered bus stop depends entirely on the design of the bus stop

I thought you were watching the X Files for a moment there

No, I don't accept your argument. Smokers physically harm people in their direct line of fire. I'm bloody sick of smokers and vapers, people vaping on trains and in pubs WHEN they shouldn't and they deliberately do it...ah leave them alone. NO! I have a lung condition and can tell when folk are vaping in the room when no-one else can, because I can't breathe properly!! People drinking in the same space don't affect me, so no, your argument isn't valid. HTH.

Isobel201 · 31/12/2024 17:25

Its not a smoking shelter, its a bus shelter. I agree, he should have stayed outside of the shelter.

PrincessofWells · 31/12/2024 17:26

I voted you are being unreasonable because I would have told him to move out of the shelter.

I really didn’t want the hassle. Maybe he would have listened, apologised and moved but he really looked like he was spoiling for a fight so I didn’t want to get sucked in

byteme1011 · 31/12/2024 17:30

I also thought it was illegal as it's illegal to smoke on an open railway platform! Definitely NABU - I vape (used to smoke) and etiquette is always smoke/vape outside of the bus shelter if someone is in it

Yes, I can quite understand why you didn't.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 31/12/2024 17:32

@Soubriquet why is drug taking not demonised like cigarette smoking??? majority of them end up on the streets begging for money but there are still very loads of "nice" people doing lines of cocaine at the weekends, either in their own homes or at clubs and many more ordinary people smoking cannabis which stinks to high heaven!!
