Aibu to be really annoyed by smoking man

Waiting at the bus stop. It’s a covered shelter thing with a bar to sit on

A man comes in, sits down and immediately lights up and starts to smoke. Dd had to go out because she’s asthmatic and it sets her off.

As soon as he finished smoking….he went outside and started to walk around.

Im so bloody annoyed. I didn’t feel like I could say “I’m sorry can you not smoke around me” cos 1, it’s not my space, and 2 he looks the sort that would argue back and it’s another 10 mins till the bus, so really didn’t want to start anything.

Someone lit up at a bus top near me and my child this week but as soon as they did it they stood up and moved away so the smoke didn’t blow near us.
What that man did near you was gross. And usually there are signs saying not to do it at bus stops.

Curtainqueen · 31/12/2024 18:09

This is the sort of thing my friend does. She's completely oblivious to anyone around her and just lights up blowing smoke everywhere. There's been a huge shift in society with smoking since we now know how harmful it is. I don't like people blowing smoke all over me at bus stops either, it's not nice. People don't realise how much it stinks. I say that as an ex smoker who would be horrified to just smoke all over people now.

BrightSnail · 31/12/2024 18:16

Sort of feel like what ls/isn't legal misses the point to some extent, too. Maybe what that man did was legal and maybe it wasn't. What concerns me is that I hear so many stories like this now where people do dickish things and say 'well the Me Me Me Act (2018) says I can do this and your comfort and safety don't matter'. But then I suppose whether humans (should) need laws to dictate morality is a massive philosophical question. It's quite easy to just not be a dick.

NCforThisOccasion · 31/12/2024 18:18

I watched one of my parents die from smoking-related disease last year. I’m asthmatic and really can’t be around smoke - it’s physically dangerous for me - so I didn’t even get to spend much time with parent until the final days in hospital. You don’t want to die that way. Your kids don’t want to watch you die that way. It’s undignified and painful and frightening.

I have no patience with any pro-smoking bullshit. It should be banned outright. Smoking around kids should be heavily punished with fines. I was the kid who other children stayed away from at school because I stank of my parents’ cigarettes. They were decent people and caring parents who loved me and who paid a lot of attention to my welfare. They just caught the addiction, and had kids, before there was public information about how dangerous it is.

If you’re a smoker, and you have kids, please don’t expose them to it. Don't make them the kids who stink, and whose home stinks. And please try to quit, because you don’t want them watching you die that way. I will never get over it.

Its mad how smoking has become so socially unacceptable and the slightest hint of it sets people off.

Why is it mad? Smoking is disgusting and should be socially embarrassing, I find smokers tend to be massively inconsiderate.

It’s gross and he shouldn’t have smoked in a bus stop.

It's outside

AsTheLightFades · 31/12/2024 18:23

Womanofcustard · 31/12/2024 16:46

It’s illegal to smoke inside covered bus shelters!

Link please

sunflowersngunpowdr · 31/12/2024 18:25

I'm a smoker but I think this isn't right. I would never sit at a bus stop and smoke around other people especially children I'd stand up and move myself away. You are right to be annoyed but don't beat yourself up for not calling him out. You had a kid with you and people turn violent and aggressive quickly.

BlueSlate · 31/12/2024 18:27

I smoke but never around other people if I can help it. Eg if there's a smoking area outside a pub but people are eating, I move well away or wait until they've finished. If there are people out there not smoking, I'd avoid sitting at a table near them at all.

I'd never smoke in a confined area. Yes, a bus shelter is outside but it doesn't have the same airflow as outside the bus shelter. So I'd go outside.

My children are adults and I still don't smoke around them. Don't smoke in the car or house.

Lots of people are really rude it's just that this is a really obvious way to show it if you are but smoking doesn't make you an inconsiderate person by default.

BrightSnail · 31/12/2024 18:27

@NCforThisOccasion Very sorry and sad to hear that. You have my sympathies.

spuddy4 · 31/12/2024 18:28

@AsTheLightFades it depends on the structure of the bus shelter.

LoveIsAVerb · 31/12/2024 18:32

I smoke, I absolutely love smoking, I am a completely unrepentant smoker.

But I would not smoke in a bus shelter if other people were there. I would go outside the shelter. Even in the rain etc.

BrightSnail · 31/12/2024 18:33

Besides which we're talking about laws that are rarely enforced/punished anyway. Quote the law at people like the charmer in question and I'd bet you won't get very far.

ScarletWitchM · 31/12/2024 18:40

I used to smoke and would always move away from others and be conscientious of other people. Apparently that is rare these days though, weather it’s smoking or vaping around others, using phones without headphones or not giving up seats for those in need. Society has become very selfish IMO

BlueSlate · 31/12/2024 18:47

Tbh, I find vapers to be less consoderate than most smokers because they view it as 'harmless' and 'nice smelling'

Because it’s disgusting. By all means stink and slowly poison yourself, but don’t inflict it upon others.

I'm a smoker, but there's some places you simply don't do it , if you have a bit of common sense and decency.

Sure I COULD sit myself down next to the breastfeeding mum and the mum with a baby in her pram and one on her lap and blow smoke all over them, but I (or anyone else) SHOULDN'T.(and won't)

I agree. I feel quite sorry for smokers nowadays.

Smokers can be selfish bastards.

I agree. It's disgusting and if I find out someone smokes, I instantly lose any respect for them. Smokers are selfish, inflict their rank breath on everyone around them, cost the NHS a fortune and absolutely stink.

You have to be a bit thick to smoke, too. Knowing what it does to your body, and doing it anyway? It's incomprehensible to me.

toomuchfaff · 31/12/2024 21:51

BIossomtoes · 31/12/2024 16:27

The £8.8 billion tax it generates. I don’t suppose you mind that too much or perhaps you’d like to pay more income tax?

I’m not a smoker, incidentally.

I'm not a smoker, used to be. Never used to subject non smokers to my smoke though, kids there yeah I'm not lighting up, I'm moving away.

But because it generates tax, we all meant to be happy when smokers are around us? You one of those people that think money fixes everything?

Itsaswelltime · 31/12/2024 21:55

I thought smoking inside bus shelters was illegal?
