To swap miserable DH for a Yorkshire terrier.

He is truly miserable. Barely speaks to me. Plenty to say to other people - just never me. Typical grumpy old man. I have a dog already. My only source of affection. Kids have left and moved on. Very friendly, dog mad existing dog and I would really really really love a Yorkshire terrier. DH has threatened to move out if I do. Can’t bear anymore dog hair or smells, he says. Ok. So it’s him or the dog. I’m seriously considering the dog. Am I being mad? Will I regret this? Also, can a Yorkshire terrier help at all with the bills? No probably not. It’s all such a dilemma. We’ve been married for 350 years. Actually 35, but you know what I mean.

Get the dog 100%

chipsandpeas · 24/12/2024 11:07

get the dog

ThePineappleSeahorse · 24/12/2024 11:07

Get a dog and a divorce.

BaronessBomburst · 24/12/2024 11:07

Buy the dog. Why spend your life being cook and cleaner for a miserable man who doesn't value you?

MissDoubleU · 24/12/2024 11:07

Maybe in response to him saying “it’s me or the dog” you should tell him “I’ll choose you when you choose me.”

Gliblet · 24/12/2024 11:10

Christ, I'd buy 5.

Why not treat yourself to a divorce, then get the new dog once you're sure you've got all your living arrangements etc sorted?

Step 1: line up your ducks (financials, Wikivorce, Divorce for Dummies, family solicitor...)

Step 2: get that dog! Hopefully he'll move out at this point

Step 3: file for divorce and put house up for sale

Step 4: ignore his attempts to 'talk', promises to change, tearful assurance of eternal love, etc

Step 5: lead your best life with your faithful dogs...

MadamePeriwinkle · 24/12/2024 11:19

Go for it. My husband refused to have cats...he's now my ex husband and these are my current housemates - much easier to live with!

Yorkies are wonderful, I had one for almost 19 years. Full of fun, very loyal and loving, will make you feel loved every day. Feisty and stubborn but totally worth it cos they are so bloody cute.

Can you say any of that about your DH?

Go for it (and please post a pic when you do 😀).

TwilightCat · 24/12/2024 11:30

Serious question - can you afford two dogs if you split up? Because it sounds like you should cut him from your life but you need to think about the harsh realities before getting another dog if you do split.

WhatMe123 · 24/12/2024 11:32

I'd say the dog would make you happier

OneCanWonder · 24/12/2024 11:33

Get the dog!

crystalball2025 · 24/12/2024 11:34

Get the dog!!

mumda · 24/12/2024 11:37

The dog is a sticking plaster on your marriage. Like being vows or having another baby it won't improve the marriage.

Resolve the marriage difficulties and then decide how many extra dogs you want.

SoupDragon · 24/12/2024 11:39

I voted YABU purely because there is a horrible Yorkshire terrier next door who yaps at anything and everything. Get a spaniel.

SwordToFlamethrower · 24/12/2024 11:42

Your future years are precious my love. Get the dog, ditch the grumpy bastard. Gift yourself the gift of freedom.

Merry Christmas

FiatMultiplaWhopper · 24/12/2024 11:43

Get the dog and leave!

wetotter · 24/12/2024 11:45

I'd end the marriage first, then get the dog as soon as he's moved out (if you can afford to buy him out) or you've both found new places (if you have to sell up)

But definitely get the dog!

QOD · 24/12/2024 11:47

from your description i think i would swap him for a yorkshire pudding ...

Almostwelsh · 24/12/2024 11:48

On a serious note, only get the dog if you could afford to buy your own place after divorce. Most rentals don't allow pets and in the current market landlords can be very picky about who they accept.

Liquorish · 24/12/2024 11:50

Yorkshire terriers are the absolute best. You have no choice but to get one!

duckduckgooseduckagain · 24/12/2024 11:50

YABU Get a border terrier not a yorkie.

Penguinfeet24 · 24/12/2024 11:51

Get a divorce, then the dog. Don't be wasting your life.
