To swap miserable DH for a Yorkshire terrier.

He is truly miserable. Barely speaks to me. Plenty to say to other people - just never me. Typical grumpy old man. I have a dog already. My only source of affection. Kids have left and moved on. Very friendly, dog mad existing dog and I would really really really love a Yorkshire terrier. DH has threatened to move out if I do. Can’t bear anymore dog hair or smells, he says. Ok. So it’s him or the dog. I’m seriously considering the dog. Am I being mad? Will I regret this? Also, can a Yorkshire terrier help at all with the bills? No probably not. It’s all such a dilemma. We’ve been married for 350 years. Actually 35, but you know what I mean.

GET THE DOG x

isthismylifenow · 24/12/2024 14:25

He should not have made that ultimatum really. 😂

Come home with a new dog one day soon, and say you don't choose him.

I can tell you that the Lab pup I got when I divorced my ex, is far more more loyal and respects me so much more than the ex ever did.

Why is this even a question. Seriously? How many people are doing this.

You're essentially asking 'Shall I be miserable and live with someone who no longer makes me happy, or not.'

It shouldn't be this difficult. We get one life.

If finances are really problematic, see what you can get with your half if you go north.

This.

I'm happily single at age 61 and will never understand why women put up with these shitty marriages.

YABU Get a border terrier not a yorkie.

This!

ACynicalDad · 24/12/2024 14:43

Get a yorkiepoo, might not shed.

If getting a new puppy, get them used from the start to having their teeth cleaned daily with a veterinary toothpaste- It’s often gum disease that makes dogs smell bad.
Dogs don’t mind tooth brushing if done from young age.
Also saves anaesthesia for “ Dentals”.

Edited

Makes a massive difference and if you start as a little puppy, they see it as a real treat. It's hilarious how much they enjoy toothbrush time, I use a kiddy brush and started with just a little taste. It is also really good as the vet can examine their teeth and they're used to it.

Still, defo, get the dog!

Get. The. Dog. Get. Rid. Of. Him. xxx

cobden28 · 24/12/2024 18:44

This is what i did when my ex and I separated in 2014. My last dog had to be put to sleep in 2007 so I wanted to get a dog again after I took early retirement in 2010, but my ex wouldn't allow it. Told him that as soon as I'd found my own place I was going to get a dog; as soon as I'd got new secure fencing put in, that's exactly what I did.
I'd choose a small dog over my ex any day.

DramaAlpaca · 24/12/2024 18:52

Absolutely swap him for the dog.

I'm not a small dog person, but I sometimes idly think about swapping my DH for a cat. I have a lovely spaniel but he's needy. A laid back cat (or preferably two) would be perfect. DH doesn't like cats. I don't think I'm being unreasonable.

Jackiepumpkinhead · 24/12/2024 18:55

MadamePeriwinkle · 24/12/2024 11:19

Go for it. My husband refused to have cats...he's now my ex husband and these are my current housemates - much easier to live with!

Beauties

GettingStuffed · 24/12/2024 19:00

I'd swap for a dog it I were you, but don't get a yapping rat on a lead, get a proper dog like a chocolate labrador.

Fangisnotacoward · 24/12/2024 19:02

You have one life to live. What's going to bring you the most happiness over the next 15 years, a yorkie or your husband?

deeahgwitch · 24/12/2024 19:03

QOD · 24/12/2024 11:47

from your description i think i would swap him for a yorkshire pudding ...

Brilliant 😂

HoppityBun · 24/12/2024 19:03

How would this swap work? I’m intrigued by the details. I can readily understand how you’d bring the dog in, but who would take your DH? You might need an intermediary. Or a trip to the recycling centre: there’s possibly a whole section for reject DHs.

Nordione1 · 24/12/2024 19:21

Dog, obviously. Why do you need to ask.

Also, have you considered what I think might even be better than a YT? A Chorkie.....

To swap miserable DH for a Yorkshire terrier.

StrawberryWater · 24/12/2024 13:06

Why are you still with him? He sounds like such a miserable old fart.

Interesting question. Our youngest has only just left home for one. Secondly the house. I love my house and that’s a big sacrifice. I’ve spent a lifetime making it lovely. DH hasn’t but he’s been indispensable in financing it as he’s been the earner. He’s partially retired now so I’m going to be spending more time in it with him . It’s definitely taking the shine off. Everything I do seems either completely taken for granted or worse still not quite good enough. Things came to a head on Saturday night. He went for Crimbo drinks with work friends. I picked him up and he’d bought himself a Santa hat for the occasion apparently. He was all Christmas cheer saying his goodbyes. He then gets in the car, whips off the hat and reverts to monosyllabic answers to my enquiries about the fun. What’s more he started to criticise the way in which I was driving our car !!!!! It was the last bloody straw for me. I could have strangled him with his tinsel.

Ah, selective social effort...

Scirocco · 24/12/2024 21:56

Seems a reasonable swap. Team Yorkie!

AltitudeCheck · 24/12/2024 22:04

If only there was a kennels where you could drop off your husband for rehoming and pick up a dog in return! I'd join the queue too!

MsRosewater · 24/12/2024 22:06

Team Dog all the way.....

(but strongly advise that beagles are the best dogs ever and have the most velvety ears and and are at least. million times more cheerful than bah humbug human husbands or at least more than mine....£

PermanentTemporary · 24/12/2024 22:08

Sounds as if you might both be happier apart.

As long as you're prepared for things to get phenomenally nasty. You can never tell how they'll react.

NiftyPeachDreamer · 24/12/2024 22:26

I’d pick a Yorkshire Pudding over him let alone a terrier.

Pippyls67 · 27/12/2024 13:25

Thank you everyone. It’s a resounding result. I’m not being unreasonable to swap him for a Yorkshire terrier. I’m thrilled. I note the ducks in a row first comments. For Barnabas’ sake I will do this. (- this will be the little guys name 🥰).

You're most definitely not being unreasonable to swap him for a yorkshire terrier, yorkies are the best little dogs

SpikyHatePotato · 27/12/2024 14:44

Good decision, @Pippyls67 ! Please send us pics of the dog when you get him/ her.
