Sly extra spending at Morrisons (insert other supermarket as preferred)

Just a heads up for folks to keep their eyes on the cashier whilst packing up your Christmas big shop into bags.

Husband was brilliant in loading the conveyor with big shop and dutifully stood uncomplaining with wallet in hand to pay.

I took on the packing duty, (seasoned experience applies) and we had us all done in due course. Cashier certainly did not rush, chatting to her colleague about their breakfast....

Anyway, when we were told the total by the cashier I asked her to double check as I was sure I'd seen her double scan a bottle of champagne. Prefuse apologies received, machine checked and double scan hastily removed. Husband then happily paid.

Before leaving the till area a quick scan of the receipt showing more double scanning, in excess of £23!

Had to go to customer service for refund to husband's debit card. Assistant there didn't bat an eyelid, didn't want to check anything and refunded amount in record time. We thought she must be used to providing double scan refunds at this time of year. If we hadn't checked, we'd be nearly £50 out of pocket!!!

Just another shopper trying keep the cost of living to the cost of living, and not unnecessarily adding to the profits of the supermarket!

Keep 'em peeled...👀

It sounds like they are rushing to keep up leading to doubling scanning errors. It's not ideal to always have to check receipts but human errors will happen.

TheGoogleMum · 23/12/2024 18:15

I usually use the self checkouts to be honest

SharpOpalNewt · 23/12/2024 18:16

Suddenly the self checkouts look more attractive.

Ummm... in what world does this merit praise? Presumably you wouldn't expect to be described as 'brilliant' for putting things on a supermarket conveyor belt and handing over a credit card without complaining? Why would he complain? I assume the food is for him too? Confused

Floralnomad · 23/12/2024 18:20

It’s a simple mistake when people are busy , it hardly benefits the cashier or do you think that they get the extra as a Christmas bonus .

GameofPhones · 23/12/2024 18:20

Their online shopping (through Amazon) will often put 2 of an item in your basket when you were sure you only pressed for 1. I always check this now.

SabreIsMyFave · 23/12/2024 18:21

Getting my popcorn out for this one! 😆 🍿

What is so brilliant about a man loading the conveyor belt, and taking out his wallet to pay for the shopping? Confused

Does your husband 'help you with housework' too @Rudicoolcat Is he 'good' like this?

Not madly busy, except for the chattering 😆 and £50 worth of double scanning doesn't seem genuine, hence the sly...

He's 66!! In his own words on the way there he said he would be dutifully paying for Christmas!! 😂

Doesn't sound genuine to me, given the items and the number of items.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 23/12/2024 18:34

Aldi and Lidl are terrible for this. I always double check the receipt.

But what would be the benefit to them of doing it deliberately

saveforthat · 23/12/2024 18:35

I don't understand why you think double scanning stuff would be of any benefit to the cashier.

You are not allowed to have a nice husband and describe his nice ways. Not in the spirit OP!!

I'm not praising him, just acknowledging to myself that my years of investment have paid off😄 and he knows what his part in the big Christmas shop is!! 🤣

There is absolutely no financial benefit to an employee doing this. So are you implying there are orders from on high to yield higher profits by doing this?

Sounds like overworked and underpaid retail workers making a simple and genuine mistake...

Well, i would understand that, which is why i didn't say that... 😊Unless Morrisons staff do benefit then...😯

Woahtherehoney · 23/12/2024 18:41

Morrisons had a ton of system issues today - so much so they’ve given more card holders an extra 10% off due to the issue. It could be due to that.

Dartmoorcheffy · 23/12/2024 18:41

How would it be sly? She's hardly making any profit is she? Just risking her job but making mistakes. If it was in an independent family run little shop it could be a different matter, but certainly not a huge supermarket chain.

Sometimes he even babysits their children for her too I bet.
