You do know really?

Talipesmum · 05/12/2024 16:34

There’s nothing good about voicemail. It’s a hideous invention, it was awful decades ago and it’s awful now. Bam.

MumonabikeE5 · 05/12/2024 16:35

Both are very annoying. What’s wrong with text?

Voicenote is within whatever app you're using to chat. So instead of having to check your voicemail, press 1 for new messages, not know what's from who etc - you just press play in the app when you want to listen to it.

coffeesaveslives · 05/12/2024 16:38

Voicemail is when you ring someone and leave a message when they don't answer.

Voice note is when you record your message and send it via text or WhatsApp.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 05/12/2024 16:38

Voice notes are way worse than voice mail. Just fucking send a standard message

EffortlesslyInelegant · 05/12/2024 16:39

Yeah you know. You know you do. This is just faux naivete.

Ok....voice note is a recorded message usually sent via a text platform, so kind of like a bit of a monologue, but usually more like a slightly disjointed or verbal text message.

A voicemail is what you leave if you ring someone, fully intending to speak directly to them if they answer.

Ah thanks . I’ve NEVER used an app to chat.!!!

As I say, I’m in 1983.

This.
Succinct and to the point. :)

MonsieurBlobby · 05/12/2024 16:42

Assuming you're not being faux naive...

A voicemail I'd use as a quick message to tell someone why I called/ask them to call me back.

A voice note is the entire message in itself. I like them if I'm messaging someone I'm close to but don't see in person/it's hard to arrange a time for a call. I like getting a long, chatty voice note in these situations, it feels like more of a connection than a written message and it's easier to convey tone etc.

minipie · 05/12/2024 16:42

Voice notes are annoying because it’s quicker for the sender to send a voice note (compared with text) but it’s slower for the recipient to listen than to read.

So by sending a voice note you’re basically saying my time is more important than yours.

Also unlike a text you can’t quickly check your phone and see if it’s urgent or not, you have to go into the app and listen. Again, more work for the recipient

Voicemail is just something you leave when you call someone and they don’t answer. Much less annoying

What you've never used WhatsApp? Just a normal messaging app?

Sassysoonwins · 05/12/2024 16:43

I hate voicemail because I have to call voicemail and press lots of options which uses up my time to essentially hear 'please call me back' which could have been a quick text.

Voice notes in whatsapp are only slightly less annoying in that I can click straight on one. I still have to move out of a crowded space to hear it though when a whatsapp message I can scan in two secs.

Basically, both make light work for the sender but not the recipient.

Honestly not faux naive and thank you - this clarifies it really well

I've got a phobia of either of them. It's like text is fine. Talk to me when I'm fucking listening, and we can have an actual conversation.
What's the point in just gassing on into the phone expecting someone who's busy to want to sit down and listen to it like a flipping podcast when they could just phone you back? 🤣

Your world sounds really small, in a bad way.

I like voice notes because sometimes you just don’t have time for a phone call but you still want to get the essence of something across verbally. For example a story that would take ages to type out, or may not be easy to follow written down, or replying to a long message that goes off on tangents. Sometimes you don’t want to send an essay to someone, and chances are the voice note would be shorter to digest. You can say things quicker than typing, or listen to things quicker than reading for example. Also some things might just need a personal touch.

The recipient can listen and respond in their own time. Can replay it if they want. Doesn’t require any extra action to listen to it like using a separate phone app, calling certain numbers or pressing certain buttons to listen or having to save the voicemail to access it later. It’s all accessible right there in the message chain. It also means the other person doesn’t have to call you to respond, everyone has busy lives.
