FYI I still live in 1983 (and am quite happy there)

Haysi Fantaysi anyone??!

Voice notes are good for people who struggle to type for whatever reason I think. I don't mind them.

Yeah you know. You know you do. This is just faux naivete.

Honestly and possibly sadly - not true

im so 1983 I’m just settling down to watch Play Your Cards Right

Thank you for asking OP. I didn’t understand the difference either

Nor did I. Not that it matters since I don't use either of them - text is fine for me Smile

Oreyt · 05/12/2024 17:01

How old are you all that don't know?

GoldenSunflowers · 05/12/2024 17:03

I’ve received my first voicenote two weeks ago. I’d WhatsApped someone I knew, like you would normally, and I received a 2 minute voicenote that included both the wish to set a time to talk and the offer to join in some pyramid-type selling scheme 🙄

Oreyt · 05/12/2024 17:03

My mums 67. She wouldn't know what a voice note is. But she has what's app and would probably know it as recording / sending a voice message over what's app.

Closer to retirement than to high school 😀

Lifestooshort71 · 05/12/2024 17:04

Voicemail is just an answerphone for mobiles that the doctor's surgery leaves garbled messages on. Never heard of voice notes but have now read the replies and can't see the need to ever send or read one. In my 70s and texts do me nicely.

doodleschnoodle · 05/12/2024 17:05

I'm a voice note convert (with certain people!). My best friend and I use them a lot as our schedules don't overlap for phone calls very often but we like to hear each others voices, so we often make use of walking on the school run etc to send voice notes to each other.

TheNimbleTiger · 05/12/2024 17:05

My preference is people answer the phone.
This new refusal to talk on the phone is ridiculous.

Wait until you hear about the other things you can send to people…

like sending your literal heart beat to someone…

or sending an animated emoji that records your voice and mirrors your facial expressions…

or playing turn based games with someone like connect 4…

or sending someone your live location…

It's like another language.

loropianalover · 05/12/2024 17:09

‘I still live in 1983 - honest!’ ‘Oh yeah, except for posting on Mumsnet. Never messaged on an app though!’

I don't know either. Well I do now because of the very helpful explanation posted above.

TwoLeggedGrooveMachine · 05/12/2024 17:10

Thanks for asking OP, I didn’t know either. I use WhatsApp all the time for family, friends and hobby group. It seems I received my first voice note this week in WhatsApp from my much younger brother. I thought it was some fancy technical thing but it’s just a voice recording on a messaging platform?

Marsaala · 05/12/2024 17:11

Oreyt · 05/12/2024 16:33

You do know really?

I don't know but have only just looked at this thread. HOping to learn.

My son introduced me to Flock of Seagulls a few years ago ❤️

Voicenote is within whatever app you're using to chat. So instead of having to check your voicemail, press 1 for new messages, not know what's from who etc - you just press play in the app when you want to listen to it.

Wot?? I don't "chat" in apps

mamajong · 05/12/2024 17:13

Yanbu...if you live under a rock! 🤭

Tryingtokeepgoing · 05/12/2024 17:13

I have a, probably irrational, hatred of voicenotes, perfectly articulated above by @minipie as a clear indication that the sender values their time more highly than that of the recipient. So, I never listen to them - though fortunately few people I know actually use them 😂

Edited to add, I rarely listen to voicemail either. But, the recent iOs upgrade that now shows you a transcript of the message left is very useful. It almost always confirms that the message isnt worth listening to

TheDefiant · 05/12/2024 17:14

New convert to the voice note

I'll hang up and text instead of leaving a voicemail though. 😳

that sounds just like voicemail to me

Oreyt · 05/12/2024 17:15

@Marsaala

You may not know. The op has obviously heard the term before.

If she can start a thread on here odds are she's already googled what a voice note is.
