Nothing -,it’s more straightforward

For whom? I can scan an sms or WA, I don’t have to listen to your slowly speaking and eventually getting to the point.

iPhone

So you have used an app to chat - the iMessage app. That's what the PP meant about the voice message appearing within the specific chat app (in this case iMessage) rather than a voicemail which appears in the phone app.
Unless you choose not to text people at all?

Yes I’ve used iMessage

I have a, probably irrational, hatred of voicenotes, perfectly articulated above by @minipie as a clear indication that the sender values their time more highly than that of the recipient. So, I never listen to them - though fortunately few people I know actually use them 😂

Edited to add, I rarely listen to voicemail either. But, the recent iOs upgrade that now shows you a transcript of the message left is very useful. It almost always confirms that the message isnt worth listening to

Edited

I did not know about the transcript thing. That. Could. Save. Me so much pain.

Cheepcheepcheep · 05/12/2024 17:41

My friendship group (mid 30s) were all totally anti voice notes (and never really call each other..) until we all had babies. Now I voicenote them when I’m running around sorting stuff for the preschoolers, and they reply when they’re nap trapped and it’s harder to message in text. We’re begrudgingly converted!

How old are you all that don't know?

50 years old. I'm glad the OP asked as well as I didn't know.

Don't use whatsapp as so far as I can tell it would add nothing to my life that I can't achieve through text and phone, so don't want to engage with an unknown third party that I have no reason to trust unless the benefits are clear.

Some pretty unpleasant comments on here.
I'm with OP: I didn't know what a Voice Note was.
I've no reason to use Voice Notes.
Just because people aren't up to speed with the lastest tech and social media etc doesn't make them lesser people. It just means they live different life styles.

I didn't think my question was unpleasant?

coxesorangepippin · 05/12/2024 20:37

Who has time to listen to voice notes

Why do you think I would care

AuriculaFlower · 05/12/2024 20:38

NewDaye · 05/12/2024 16:54

Your world sounds really small, in a bad way.

I like voice notes because sometimes you just don’t have time for a phone call but you still want to get the essence of something across verbally. For example a story that would take ages to type out, or may not be easy to follow written down, or replying to a long message that goes off on tangents. Sometimes you don’t want to send an essay to someone, and chances are the voice note would be shorter to digest. You can say things quicker than typing, or listen to things quicker than reading for example. Also some things might just need a personal touch.

The recipient can listen and respond in their own time. Can replay it if they want. Doesn’t require any extra action to listen to it like using a separate phone app, calling certain numbers or pressing certain buttons to listen or having to save the voicemail to access it later. It’s all accessible right there in the message chain. It also means the other person doesn’t have to call you to respond, everyone has busy lives.

“Your world sounds really small, in a bad way.” then great long tedious post about voice notes 😂

Marine30 · 05/12/2024 20:39

Far too many people leaving me voice notes lately. When I try it back I feel like a tragic mix of Hamlet and Bridget Jones. I do not like them at all.

sharpclawedkitten · 05/12/2024 20:46

Skepticgal · 05/12/2024 16:44

It's new to me that there's a difference

And me. I don't listen to either.

If someone just calls and says "Kitten it's Puppy, please call me on 01234567890 (and helpfully says their number twice, so I have time to get it down", fine. Anything else, not fine. Too long, too annoying. Email or text/whatsapp.

RedRiverShore5 · 05/12/2024 20:46

I must say that the voicemail transcript on iOS is very useful, I can see immediately it's that Chinese scammer whose call has been silenced and ignore. I probably wouldn't bother with using a voice note though

Marsaala · 05/12/2024 23:05

So I've just looked on whatsapp on my android phone and I can't see anywhere that I can leave or pick up voice notes. I've pressed the three dots at top right and there are no options. Oh wise ones ?

ichundich · 05/12/2024 23:09

The difference is that there was a genuine justification for leaving someone a voicemail - they weren't contactable at the time of call. There is no such excuse for wasting people's time with voice notes that ramble on for minutes. I'm just glad I've finally discovered that you can play them at x2 the normal speed.

I'm sorry but it came over as ageist: that you were implying those who didn't know were necessarily old.

Press the green microphone at the right hand bottom next to the new message area

You're not that busy

Very happy to have discovered iOS voicemail transcripts via this thread!

Thanks I’m definitely getting the gist of the voicenote /mail differential now!

honestly this time yesterday I thought they were both exactly the same ! I think it’s because I didn’t want there to be another unfamiliar ‘thing’ I had to learn about !

Since WhatsApp allows you to use voice-to-text to dictate messages, they should absolutely be allowing people to read transcripts of voice notes.

Inlimboin50s · 06/12/2024 08:44

I don't know either. I always call it an answerphone.
Only upgraded from my simple nokia to a smart phone two years ago.

ThatshallotBaby · 06/12/2024 08:47

I also didn’t know. I’m 56.

midgetastic · 06/12/2024 08:49

They are pretty much the same thing - as is so much "new" stuff - it's old ideas rebadged endlessly

Anyone else think of fax as an early form of text message

Cornettoninja · 06/12/2024 08:59

I know what a voice note is, I just don’t ’get’ them. Just ring me or message me 🤷‍♀️

luckily I don’t come across them in my circle at all. I don’t really like the idea of being monologued at.
