Rachel Reeves lied on her CV was not an “Economist”

AIBU - it’s OK to lie to get ahead

AINBU - it’s bad RReeves very Publicly lied about her prior work. We are right to feel annoyed by this lie.

saw this headline and am feeling really disappointed. Think Rachel Reeves needs to tell public exactly her job title.
She changed job title from Economist, to “Retail Banking”
An Economist at a Bank, is a clear and specific job, it’s a economic research position. A good experience for her current position.

”Retail Banking” - is not a job title … she could have been doing anything in a branch from Bank Teller, to Branch manager, or working in back office operations putting bank notes in the plastic bags or in HR.

Kev doesn’t seem to have held any of his jobs for very long.

His CV matches a Kevin Gillet who was quoted in Wales Online in 2007 as working at Bank of Scotland.

Just had a look to see what the fuss was about.

He's been contacted for more info in that link. Not sure it will do much tbh but I guess we'll see what happens

His tone here is vastly different to that of "professional OAP" Kev.

Do you mean this about the poster @EverythingAllatOnceAllTheTime ?

Is Kev the Chancellor?

Did I miss something?

Yes. You missed that you will be accused of lying, whether you did or not, if you're the chancellor. But if you're doing the accusing you really don't have to worry about sticking to the truth. Simple pimples or whatever the phrase was.

You're using Kev as Kevidence that RR is nefarious, so questioning his credentials is valid.

Hi folks

This thread is currently getting derailed by a bunfight. Can we ask that it stops now? If it continues after this post, we'll need to make suspensions.

In the meantime, we're going through reports - thanks for bearing with us.

OK. Back on track. I will be interested to see if the Wales Online KG is the same as Professional OAP KG.

Is it worse than Iain Duncan Smith claiming that he went to the University of Perugia?

Or similar in attack style to Andrea Leadsom when the allegation was she exaggerated her role as a banker?

This style never changes. But I think it doesn’t deserve le Carre levels of intrigue

Labour could force pension funds to invest more in UK assets. Jesus wept.

No Jesus didn't weep. As it happens, I've spent this afternoon analysing S&P 500 type returns from non-US equities and there's absolutely money to be made from U.K. equities, particularly if you invest in a decent active fund (the indices as a whole haven't done amazingly well but there's potential upside as a result).

If you want an example, take a look at the five year return from Rockwood, a UK small cap fund - 103%, equivalent to the GBP return from the S&P 500 and that's one of the top performing indices globally. Filtronic and Funding Circle, both listed U.K. companies, have share price increases of 360% and 220% in the last year.

Talk to fund managers and most will tell you that (a) the extreme concentration of the Magnificent Seven will unwind and valuations are lofty to say the least and (b) U.K. equities are still trading at attractive valuations, hence the big premiums paid by overseas buyers if you look at M&A over the last year.

Give me U.K. equities every day over infrastructure funds which Labour seems to be keen to mandate pension funds to invest in.

The problem is his accusations are so personal and politically motivated that you can see why no one would take them seriously.

Nor is it in the interest of anyone involved at the time to suggest that Reeves was anything other than professional.

Latterly the Tory Party say it’s worth a go. But it’s the same as Rayner. Reeves will survive it. And it she succeeds it will be forgotten. If she fails, the same result.

All it is really is proof that Reeves has made some wealthy people very angry. They would not be so exercised if she was not competent enough to make their lives difficult. They hate her for that, that’s all this is.

Spot on, hence all the made up stuff: Fund managers told what to invest in, removal of Pensions tax relief, its all very similar to the stuff we all saw pre budget "Oh no! Reeves will take away my CT discount"

Its highly unlikely anyone would be following a complaints manager from A to B either, let alone a company like HBoS.

Its almost as if a farmer has come across from another thread with BS on their boots.

..and just on key, someone says Labour are mandating PF to invest in x y or z.... just made up stories.

PandoraSox · 18/11/2024 20:34

Kev could be in a bit of trouble if he has been lying. RR could sue.

I doubt she’d bother - too much class.

An action in libel would prove interesting - for Reeves, and Labour.

bombastix · 18/11/2024 20:39

The post by Gillet is totally subjective. It’s not actionable but then consequently neither is it credible. However, it does have the tea lady slur as a comment.

This would explain the considerable kid glove nature of the Times report that does not make any claims about Reeves, and simply lists her CV as it now appears.

Here.

Small factual point for people on the number of jobs. HBOS was taken over by Lloyds in Jan 2009 as part of a rescue during the financial crisis. So he didn’t leave HBOS and move to Lloyds, it was HBOS that “moved” to Lloyds.

Edit - image from the quoted post hasn’t appeared so check the CV images in the earlier post.
