Rachel Reeves lied on her CV was not an “Economist”

1000 replies

AIBU - it’s OK to lie to get ahead

AINBU - it’s bad RReeves very Publicly lied about her prior work. We are right to feel annoyed by this lie.

saw this headline and am feeling really disappointed. Think Rachel Reeves needs to tell public exactly her job title.
She changed job title from Economist, to “Retail Banking”
An Economist at a Bank, is a clear and specific job, it’s a economic research position. A good experience for her current position.

”Retail Banking” - is not a job title … she could have been doing anything in a branch from Bank Teller, to Branch manager, or working in back office operations putting bank notes in the plastic bags or in HR.

To those of you saying the labour party only won 20% of the vote or whatever, you are conveniently forgetting that there was a huge GTTO movement going on.
I did vote labour despite them having no chance whatsoever in my constituency, but in the end was very pleased when the lib dem candidate won. I could never vote for them because Clegg, but I was delighted we no longer have a tory MP.

Artistbythewater · 17/11/2024 07:12

It was protest vote, no one really wanted Labour or Starmer, and now we are all going to pay the price for it. For years. We only just narrowly avoided a recession because they immediately started talking the economy down, its going to be a disaster.

BIossomtoes · 16/11/2024 23:09

What have they done that they said they wouldn’t?

What planet do you live on?

Angela Raymond was through to be unprepared but Reeves and Phillipson are not much better. Really scare for the U.K

Could you write that again so it makes sense? Who is Angela Raymond?

Angela Rayner if anyone is really confused.

Summernightsinthe21stcentury · 17/11/2024 07:18

No I don't believe it was a protest vote, but it was all about making sure the labour party won. Despite 14 years of conservative governments with austerity, huge inflation, Liz Truss, potential recessions, hopeless pandemic responses, brexit, etc etc, there is still a hardcore of the voting public absolutely not going to consider an alternative. It's not that different from Trump in America, except that we do have alternatives in the Lib Dems and Greens, so that people could vote for the party most likely to get the Tory out.

DanielaDressen · 17/11/2024 07:18

PandoraSox · 16/11/2024 16:56

True. It is in the Express and the Torygraph and I understand GB News is covering it.

They can try to smear all they like. She's going to remain as Chancellor.

I actually don't like Reeves, but this is ridiculous.

Edited

I agree. Just shows what an anti Labour campaign there is in some elements of the media. Her having been an economist is easily prove able to be true and it sounds like even the stuff about her having deleted the word off her LinkedIn profile is untrue. So if they will make bollocks up about this god knows what else they will make up. Sadly the majority of people will believe it.

Why are the media so biased for the Tories is the question we should be asking.

The only people talking down the economy were people like you and the tory press.
Starmer told the truth, that Hunt did not fund the 4% NI cut and did not fund the nurses, teachers and soldiers pay rises.

How many headlines did we get about all the terrible tax increases RR was going to implement?
On MN, every day we got a new scare thread.

None of it happened.

No, the talking down of the economy is on the Tories, you re even doing doing it now "pay the price for years... disaster.."

Pathetic.

dottiehens · 17/11/2024 07:29

The choices are not choices that appeal to all sectors of society. As a middle class family we have not one to vote for. Too many left wing parties probably what the majority of the current demographic in this country really want. I personally do not want to be taxed to death and have the opportunity to create some wealth to retire independently from the state. It is impossible. Taxes are essential but we are shocked by the large chunk of our earnings going to taxes and little in return. They are too high and going up all the time.

This is the worlds worst kept secret.

I have relatives who worked with her at the Old Lady during her tenure - she wasn’t an economist, but an analyst. There is a huge distinction between the two, of course.

I work in finance and we have a long-running joke about PPE graduates (we wont hire them).

Alphaalga · 17/11/2024 07:34

No more a fan of Reeves than any of the rest of Starmer's lot tbh, but they are the only alternative to absolute tory failure on every level when all said and done... and that includes cabbage Truss's lost battle against a lettuce and that Kamikwazi budget.

But you mint sauce loving sheep carry on being herded by those rabid rightwing media dogs, because there's plenty of time for them to whip up another army of tory-voting suckers between now and the next GE...

I wonder if she works as she is asking which taxes are up? Or may be she is under 16.? Never pay school fees, stamp duty, council tax, income tax? Will be ignoring this poster from now on.

Well the current tax burden is as a result of 14 years of the Conservatives & not left wing policies.
But if we want a better NHS, better roads, a better military, it has to be paid for.

Reeves added nothing to the current burden in terms of day to day taxes.

The one that will possibly affect my estate is including pensions into IHT but to be honest, i'll be dead & why shouldn't they?

People like you and me are very lucky and even now, are not being taxed to death at all.

Why a coincidence? No more a coincidence than you being on a thread discussing/criticising Labour😅.

As I said earlier, I am no Reeves fan (and I am also critical of some of what Labour is doing), but the desperate attempts to smear her are getting ridiculous.

What are you critical of what Labour is doing please, and why are you not a fan of Reeves?

You can't answer the question about which taxes on earnings are going up?

I pay income tax and have done now for 44 years and will do until I die, I expect.

You are ignoring me because you can't answer my questions. 🤷‍♀️

School fees affect a tiny % & schools don't have to pass them on, they could have slightly larger classes?
Stamp Duty is only going up on 2nd homes... most people cannot afford one home.
Council Tax will go up 5% as it has done for many years now.
Income tax isn't increasing either, Sunak froze thresholds.

You re just making up issues.

Starmer himself talked down the economy in nearly all his speeches to prepare us for their shitty budget. Talking about 22billion black hole is hardly talking up the economy. Although I expect they will stop mentioning that figure now that it is pretty clear it was made up.

summer555 · 17/11/2024 07:57

change my LinkedIn profile all the time, depending on what I'm trying to achieve. It really isn't sinister.

But you're not Chancellor and a public figure that promised a new era of trust and transparency.

There's bigging up your role and there's changing your job title or the organisation that actually employed you. The fact that she's changed her LinkedIn profile (and to retail banking which is a very different beast) suggests she wasn't being honest.

As an aside, I think her policies are poor, not least as, having finally got inflation back down to target, her budget is inflationary which will change the trajectory of interest rates and hit net borrowers, businesses wanting financing and equity markets (I work in investing). But that's a different point to lying on LinkedIn which she was unwise to do.

Given your friendly tone (ahem), I will answer.

I think Labour has made a mistake with the WFA. The whole "freebies" thing was an avoidable mess. I think they need much better comms. I wish they had been braver in their manifesto.

As for Reeves. I can't really answer that tbh. I just don't like her much.

Well the good news is that in 28/29 Labour will lift the freeze the Tories introduced.
