Thinking of the awful news today about a 17 year old girl being transported who got out of the police car on the M5 and died 😓. Aren't those cars fitted with child locks?

What the hell, this sounds awful! Can anyone link the story pls?

I think it's all just so incredibly sad, let us remember this is a child who has lost their life.

I don't think speculating who did this or that wrong right now is going to do any good for anybody witness to this traumatic event.

I think the most respectful thing we can do right now is send our love to all involved.

OrlandointheWilderness · 12/11/2024 21:22

We have no where near enough info to even begin to guess at what happened here. Let's not be pointing fingers, I know the police are a great target but that must be absolutely horrific for them, as well as for the poor girls family.

It's on the front page of the BBC site, ffs

What is your problem? Sorry, I don’t spend all day scrolling through BBC website. I saw the thread title and clicked on without realising that it’d be about an actual story in the news.

@TheShellBeach very kindly linked the article for me. Next time, scroll past a comment if you have nothing decent to say. Ffs

As far as I understand, she was held in the back of the car for questioning and released. She got out of the the car and accidentally walked into the slow lane of the motorway.

Barrenfieldoffucks · 13/11/2024 18:14

They wouldn't release her on the side of a motorway. And if they did/would, then that is insanely dangerous and needs investigating.

Understand from where? I can’t see this reported anywhere and would be astounded if it’s true.

zebrazoop · 13/11/2024 18:22

I'm thinking MH related too. They say detained not arrested . It's so sad

None of us has a clue of what happened or why. So I suggest that until we do, you keep your mouth shut. Somebody, somewhere is going through a lot of pain today.

Maysurvive · 13/11/2024 18:38

I live in Somerset and have been detained under s.136 several times. Handcuffs have not always been used and sometimes removed in the car. I have never been able to open the door from the inside. The 'place of safety' for a MH episode would usually be Rydon Ward which is in Taunton so in that case you'd expect them to be going southbound not northbound however, we really don't have the information at the moment to know what was happening. I am very local to this situation and rumours are rife. My thoughts are with the family and friends deeply affected by this. It's so very sad.

Released onto the motorway? Are you for real?

helpfulperson · 13/11/2024 18:48

certainly the initial reports it sounded more like she had had an interaction with the police and then ended up on the motorway. There are many places near me where police could let you go in a safe place eg in a housing estate, but you could walk onto the motorway in a couple of minutes if you chose to do so.

tommyhoundmum · 13/11/2024 20:06

It may be she was just being transported and not arrested.

Theimpossiblegirl · 13/11/2024 20:18

It's very sad but there's some wild speculation going on here. I am fairly local and the impact on the roads was terrible but more importantly, a young girl has lost her life. Her poor family must be devastated. We won't know the full details for some time.
I feel sorry for the poor driver that hit her.

PassingStranger · 13/11/2024 20:40

AccidentallyWesAnderson · 12/11/2024 19:04

The police statement uses the term ‘police vehicle’ twice. It’s the news article I’m reading that is using the term car. You get small
police vans.

Anyway, the point is we don’t know enough to speculate, what happened or whether if police who can’t put up with a bit of ‘thrashing about and noise’ (so ridiculous) should be police officers.

That's it blame the police!
You don't have to commit crime and be arrested etc.🙄

Barrenfieldoffucks · 13/11/2024 20:41

Yup. You shouldn't expect to get kept safe while in custody...no siree.

Not at all. Like a bunch of fisher women, gossiping. Don't give a damn about how people are feeling. You know nothing, I know nothing so just keep it shut.

gets arrested and put in a cop once so is an expert on cuffing and how police cars works

You can be cuffed to the front or the rear. Cuffs can be slipped.

I watched a video yesterday where the young woman was arrested at an airport in the US, completely out of control.
They had to strap her to some sort of rolling seat-thing, handcuffed. She then spit at them.
When they finally got her in the backseat of the police car, the officer in the front yelled, “she’s out of the cuffs,” which were behind her back.
Sure enough, she’d somehow slipped out of them.
They put them back on her much tighter.
This all stemmed from her perpetrating a racist attack on an older individual in the airport.
I despair.

There is no "slow" lane on a motorway. There are lanes 1,2,3 (and however many more).

XenoBitch · 14/11/2024 00:09

I have spent many a time in the back of police cars. You can not open them from the inside.
This poor girl was in police custody... that does not mean she was under arrest and the way to a station. Being in custody simply means you are under the supervision and care of the police.
If she was able to leave the car on the side of the motorway, then it sounds like she was kicking off in some way that meant the driver had to pull over.
I have been picked up on a motorway, and it was just me and the officer driving. If I had kicked off in the back seat, then he would have had to pull over, and open to the door to somehow deal with me. This might have happened to the girl in this case, except she managed to get out and sadly get hit by a car.

It is all speculation anyway, and the truth with come out.
