My parents love Trump

I'm not from the US but my parents love Trump. I bet they are so so happy about todays win.
I'm bisexual so part of the LGBTQ community. I'm not loud about this but still I feel you should be free to love whoever which Trump is clearly against.
Also the whole abortion thing and Trump being pro life. How can my parents who have a daughter support this man who wants this.
All the wild things he has said they think it's hilarious and agree with everything he says.
What on earth do I do about this? They are my parents but I'm so embarrassed they are. I'm also upset they have these views and openly supports him.

What has Trump said about bisexuals?

ChirpyOliveScroller · 06/11/2024 21:14

Also, is Trump anti-abortion or does he say it’s a matter for each state to decide?

Emilyjayne9421 · 06/11/2024 21:14

I think the only answer is to never talk about it. People are free to have their own political views, and whilst you may not agree with them, you do have to accept it if you want to continue a relationship with them. I’m not American either but some of my closest friends vote for different political parties here in England than I do. We just don’t talk politics. If we do, we listen to each others views and have a debate which doesn’t get heated. That can be hard to do though.

Trump was an early supporter of gay marriage back in the day. Since then it seems he has said whatever he thinks the electorate want to hear. Ultimately gay rights never really came up as a policy issue during his presidency. Here is a pretty reasonable run down of his views:

In summary I really don’t think Trump cares who you go to bed with.

Compare Trump and Harris' views on LGBTQ rights and marriage equality

Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris have starkly different messages and backgrounds on LGBTQ issues.

He said he'd vote no to the Florida vote on overturning the 6 week abortion ban there.

Personally, I doubt that on a personal level he actually cares either way. He says what will get votes. But still, despite initially saying he thought 6 weeks wasn't long enough, that's how he then said he would vote.

So you feel people should be able to love whoever they want, but you dont want your parents to love Trump?

People have different views, get over it

sprigatito · 06/11/2024 21:50

Do they know he's a rapist?

DoreenonTill8 · 06/11/2024 21:52

So you don't think your parents are allowed to have their own thoughts and opinions?

CovertPiggery · 06/11/2024 21:57

Do you think loving people of the same sex is the same as loving a rapist?!

That's got to be one of the most bizarre things I've read on here.

wickerlady · 06/11/2024 22:00

Oh bore off.

People like who they like, ironically the very thing you, yourself are advocating for.

295bkq · 06/11/2024 22:04

Don’t discuss politics with them and move on.

Autumn5000 · 06/11/2024 22:06

Obviously I don't discuss but it makes me angry but I'm just shocked that our views and beliefs are so far apart. My parents also voted reform in our election. I just feel their views are so extreme.
My parents are racist and do feel like gay peoples should be loud and proud as it makes them uncomfortable.

OP posts:
ThisZippyDenimGoose · 06/11/2024 22:07

My son has just shown me some hysterical Reddit posts about teenagers apparently feeling suicidal because Trump is anti LGBT and going to “take away their rights”. Explanation is needed.

HellsBalls · 06/11/2024 22:08

Another attention seeking post.

DoreenonTill8 · 06/11/2024 22:10

Your parents feel like gay people should be loud and proud or you think they should be loud and proud so your parents are made uncomfortable?

ForPearlViper · 06/11/2024 22:12

You have some pointless and utterly bizarre response here OP. However, trying to understand is also pointless.

You need to decide if you can work around their views, which won't change, or you can't. The decision is yours to make and you to make it and stick with it.

Quitelikeit · 06/11/2024 22:13

Let your parents be who they want

They haven’t stopped you

You don’t really know Trumps beliefs - my guess would be he doesn’t mind or give a fig about your sexuality

he doesn’t like the trans/athletes/sports thing

Willyoujustbequiet · 06/11/2024 22:18

Sorry OP, I would feel so disappointed and embarrassed by it too.

I think that's fairly obviously a typo for her parents "don't think.."

KoalaCalledKevin · 06/11/2024 22:19

I think that's fairly obviously a typo for her parents "don't think.."

But do you agree then the parents shouldn't be allowed views that differ from op?

KoalaCalledKevin · 06/11/2024 22:29

@DoreenonTill8 of course they should be allowed different views. But just like they're allowed their views, OP can have her own views and feelings on that.
Political views aren't just these things people have in isolation, they show what your values are.

To be honest, it sounds like OP has been uncomfortable with her parents' views for a while - she describes them as racist, and they sound homophobic as well, and this election has just brought it to the surface.
If OP had posted "my parents are racist and uncomfortable with my sexuality" no one would be saying "yeah but they're allowed their views, just deal with it".

He said women should be punished for it. Not sure if that was a genuine question? If it was, politely yes he’s publicly anti it. If it wasn’t…..actually I can’t today

wickerlady · 06/11/2024 22:00

So reductive. You can’t just like a rapist, misogynistic, homophobic, racist and expect your family to say you do you honey

Circumferences · 06/11/2024 22:37

His acceptance speech theme tune was the "YMCA" 😆 and he did a bit of the dance and everything.

This idea he's a terrible homophobic racist sexist rapist fascist is proper propaganda.
