Why all the raw onion on everything!

I am wondering if I am being completely unreasonable about my utter hatred of raw onion being served on nearly everything when we eat out. I ordered what was described as a ham sandwich at a cafe today. It came served with grated carrot and onion as well as lettuce. My husband had a cheese and tuna toastie earlier in the week - it came with big slices of red onion. Every filling my local coffee shop offers seems to come with some combination of spring onion, red onion or onion marmalade. Its not so bad when they explain there will be onions on the menu but these sneaky onion ninjas that garnish a perfectly lovely salad or hide the offensive alliums in an otherwise delicious bread and filling combo are giving me the rage. So AIBU to think onions are like marmite and their stinky, repeating presence should be highlighted to unwary consumers....

I think you're eating in the wrong places

bryceQ · 31/10/2024 17:57

I agree. I loathe raw onion and it also makes the salad taste of onion so even when you don't eat it everything is infected with onion!! 😒

Procrastinates · 31/10/2024 17:57

I think this might be a you problem, I genuinely can't think of the last time I had onion in anything.

Longhotsummers · 31/10/2024 17:57

It’s a cheaper garnish than other options.

TheLastLemonSherbetInTheJar · 31/10/2024 17:57

YABU. Onion makes(almost) everything better.

Isitfridayyetsophie · 31/10/2024 17:58

Yeah I agree with you. Raw onion doesn’t taste great imo and makes you smell bad. I would never put onion in a tuna sandwich or in a salad, but I guess someone must like it!

MasterBeth · 31/10/2024 18:01

There are very few foods I actively dislike. Raw onion is one of them.

toomuchfaff · 31/10/2024 18:02

"no onion please"

Problem solved.

Overtheatlantic · 31/10/2024 18:02

It’s the perfect way to ruin tuna mayo.

shellyleppard · 31/10/2024 18:03

Insist on no onions when you order maybe??

Do you know I genuinely think I am. But I get lulled into a false sense of security. Today, it was lovely farm shop in Crieff. Ham sandwich on farmhouse bread. Beautiful bread, creamy butter, salty ham... You'd think I'd be safe. But no...dastardly red onion secreted under the lettuce.

I cannot abide onion. If it gets between my teeth and I crunch it (either cooked or raw) it is like fingers down a blackboard and it makes me want to vomit. Vile, horrible vegetable.

Bornnotbourne · 31/10/2024 18:08

Yes I’ve found my people! Hate the stuff. Dislike the red onion in coleslaw trend as well.

I hate onions, just take it off!
YANBU.

I know, I know! 😂 But it surprises me where they turn up. Ham salad sandwich - yes 'please hold the onions'. Ham sandwich...caught on the hop. I think I'll have to have get it tattooed on my eyelids so I remember to say it, just in case. I'm wise to the coleslaw and that always gets a direct no!

I don't mind raw onion but I hate the recent abomination that is 'crispy onions' appearing on hot dogs etc. instead of fried onions.

Obviously a cost-saving measure but it depresses me that crap like that can usurp proper food.

Ilovecakey · 31/10/2024 18:14

Yabu I love onions! Always ask for loads in my salad

cannaethink · 31/10/2024 18:23

YANBU!
A wee bit of raw onion hidden in something and that’s all I can taste for the rest of the day. I’m not a fan at all.

BlondeFool · 31/10/2024 18:25

I agree! Raw onion is everywhere. I know say no onion please. Even if I pick it out of my salad/sandwich the food tastes of it 🤢🤢🤢🤢

CurbsideProphet · 31/10/2024 18:26

YANBU - fully agree, makes everything taste onion-y 😕

GenerousGardener · 31/10/2024 18:26

I bloody hate onions. Not only do they ruin every dish they are in or on, but they also have a vile taste that won’t go away for hours and hours and hours.
Onion is cheap and that’s why it’s scattered about like confetti on just about everything I might want to eat.
Ugh. Ugh. Ugh. 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮

UnaOfStormhold · 31/10/2024 18:27

Another member of the raw onion detestation club - why, just why does it show up everywhere?

LadyChilli · 31/10/2024 18:27

YANBU. I love raw onions but they are a strong choice to slip into something without warning given their strong flavour. These sandwiches aren't described as ham salad, but just as plain ham?

It's the same thing with mayo. It's all very well saying ask for no onions/mayo but it doesn't always occur to people to ask when it's not listed on the menu and then your burger or lovely salad or even a pizza come with a big squiggle of raw egg squeezed across it 🤢

Raindropskeepfallinonmyhead · 31/10/2024 18:28

I feel tuebsame about peppers so have started saying no pepper please - dominates the whole dish
