Why all the raw onion on everything!

I am wondering if I am being completely unreasonable about my utter hatred of raw onion being served on nearly everything when we eat out. I ordered what was described as a ham sandwich at a cafe today. It came served with grated carrot and onion as well as lettuce. My husband had a cheese and tuna toastie earlier in the week - it came with big slices of red onion. Every filling my local coffee shop offers seems to come with some combination of spring onion, red onion or onion marmalade. Its not so bad when they explain there will be onions on the menu but these sneaky onion ninjas that garnish a perfectly lovely salad or hide the offensive alliums in an otherwise delicious bread and filling combo are giving me the rage. So AIBU to think onions are like marmite and their stinky, repeating presence should be highlighted to unwary consumers....

Love it, love it, love it 😋.

It's quite strong though

EBearhug · 31/10/2024 19:25

I don't mind a hint of raw onion, but only a hint.

Mayo is okay, bit it should be remembered it's a dressing, so it's e.g. potato salad with a light addition of mayo, rather than mayo with a hint of potatoes.

A couple of years ago, rocket seemed to be the only available green salad leaf; pea shoots are a great improvement.

BureauCats · 31/10/2024 19:25

YANBU, all forms of onion are utterly disgusting. I hate the texture, whether raw or cooked. Dreadful food, and it's in bloody everything. 😡

lemonyellows · 31/10/2024 19:29

Now I am a HUGE onion fan - love raw onion in a sandwich most days!! But I agree that you shouldn't add random ingredients in a standard product without being upfront as I can see why this would be an issue

avaritablevampire · 31/10/2024 19:32

The phase will die down eventually. 20 years ago it was bloody chillies in everything; most hateful ingredient. I love onion, but I given it ruins food for lots of people and it's a strong flavour, it would be much better left out or even better on the side.

Nightowl1234 · 31/10/2024 19:33

Because onion, raw or otherwise, makes everything taste better.

wetpebbles · 31/10/2024 19:47

not nice when you have an onion allergy either

yeaitsmeagain · 31/10/2024 19:51

Love all kinds of onion in every possible form, they can do no wrong in my eyes.

They don't brown like lettuce, they actually have flavour even grown in the UK, they add a bit of texture, they're great hot or cold, they're nutritious.

nothingcomestonothing · 31/10/2024 20:00

I have found my people. Onion is the devil's vegetable and infects everything it touches with its vile onioniness. When I rule the world it will be banned.

Except for onion bhaji, which somehow manages to be nice even though it is made of the worst food in existence. Madness.

MrsClatterbuck · 31/10/2024 20:00

Where I am it's pea shoots on everything including a breakfast fry one time. Onion is OK on a salad and preferably red onions. Must be fried if on a burger but raw onion in a sandwich well just no.

LSTMS30555 · 31/10/2024 20:06

YADNBU I'm sick of it In everything 🤮 raw onion/red onion is vile and makes everything taste & smell oniony .

BookishType · 31/10/2024 20:09

I love raw onions and will happily eat everyone’s. The fact everyone is happy to let me, tells me I’m in the minority.

Catsmere · 31/10/2024 20:31

I agree, I loathe raw onion. I get cooked meals at home (retirement village) and have to specify "no salad" for so many of the meals in the warmer months, because they always have raw onion. It stinks so much and ruins anything else in the container.

BobbyBiscuits · 31/10/2024 20:57

I can't bear salad unless it contains either onion or spring onions. I even rejected a burger once when they refused to put onions on it. Well, they had them behind the counter but said they were for onion rings?
I get it if you hate them as the smell and taste rubs off on other things.
I hate raw tomatoes and always have to ask for them to be excluded.
If you go to Nandos, they don't have onions at all so you won't be harassed by the evil allium.
Also when I was in hospital, total onion free zone. I remember the menu had a picture of an onion on the front just to taunt me! 🤣

Catsmere · 31/10/2024 21:56

Evil Allium would be a great username. Or garage band.

It's nice because it's deep fried anything deep fried is the food of the gods, although possible not Hestia!

BeatsAntique · 01/11/2024 00:33

@CharlotteLucas3 I have an intolerance to it. It’s caused by some kind of enzyme that exists in raw alliums (allia?) and makes me really poorly. Fine if they’re well cooked down or dried/powdered though.

BeatsAntique · 01/11/2024 00:37

They really should be very specific on menus about what is in things. I’ve ordered many a sandwich, burger etc that has been described on the menu as, for example, ‘ham and cheddar sandwich on wholewheat bread’ which actually turns out to be a ham, cheddar, lettuce, tomato, onion and mayonnaise sandwich and I have to send it back! Just be specific so I know what I’m ordering!

saltinesandcoffeecups · 01/11/2024 00:43

I’ll eat with @Lucywilloe i love raw onion

Kleptronic · 01/11/2024 00:45

I was served a prawn cocktail with raw red onion in it. Not cheap either. I complained. Who does that? Ruins it. Bloody awful. Still not over it Hmm

PaleBrunette · 01/11/2024 00:47

Raw onion is used when people can’t cook.
Same with undressed rocket leaves on a pizza.

GogAndMagog · 01/11/2024 00:48

Say you are allergic. Job done

SomeSuperhero · 01/11/2024 00:54

Love the 50:50 vote split.

Things my mother in law puts raw onion in/with (names our own, not hers):

The Farter’s Delight:
Chopped egg (dryish due to an inadequate amount of mayo) mixed with chopped raw onion.

The Grimace:
Red and white raw onion mixed with tinned salmon and vinegar.

Halitoslaw:
Raw red, white and spring onions, with lots of garlic chopped in rice wine vinegar she serves like a coleslaw.

Grossfruit Salad:
Ruby grapefruit and red onion in yoghurt.

The Nope:
Raw onion and apple slices thick like a burger on a bun with mayonnaise.

I am sure I will remember some more. She grows onions and is obsessed with their health benefits. She is nearly 90 so may be on to something, but is is a no from me!

Why not Hestia? Unless it's the risk of chip pan fires, I can't think why she'd be opposed.

Katemax82 · 01/11/2024 08:06

I personally like raw onion, but if its sneaked into things it is a problem as 2 of my kids don't like it and my husband has developed an intolerance to them
