Why all the raw onion on everything!

I am wondering if I am being completely unreasonable about my utter hatred of raw onion being served on nearly everything when we eat out. I ordered what was described as a ham sandwich at a cafe today. It came served with grated carrot and onion as well as lettuce. My husband had a cheese and tuna toastie earlier in the week - it came with big slices of red onion. Every filling my local coffee shop offers seems to come with some combination of spring onion, red onion or onion marmalade. Its not so bad when they explain there will be onions on the menu but these sneaky onion ninjas that garnish a perfectly lovely salad or hide the offensive alliums in an otherwise delicious bread and filling combo are giving me the rage. So AIBU to think onions are like marmite and their stinky, repeating presence should be highlighted to unwary consumers....

I quite like onion in a salad.
I hate cucumber though and that gets sneaked in to sandwiches so is worse!

Matildahoney · 31/10/2024 18:30

I'm fine with onion, but sneaky cucumber is the absolute worst, it ruins everything s and leaves it's taste 🤮

QuirkyPiglet · 31/10/2024 18:31

I agree, I’m really not a fan of raw onion

tillytoodles1 · 31/10/2024 18:35

Whenever I order anything with salad I always make sure there's lots of onion I it.

YANBU. I love raw onions but they are a strong choice to slip into something without warning given their strong flavour. These sandwiches aren't described as ham salad, but just as plain ham?

It's the same thing with mayo. It's all very well saying ask for no onions/mayo but it doesn't always occur to people to ask when it's not listed on the menu and then your burger or lovely salad or even a pizza come with a big squiggle of raw egg squeezed across it 🤢

Raw egg. Nope they'd be getting that straight back. I don't eat cooked egg, let alone raw!!

I like onions,(love loads of baby white/silver skin onions on salad at home) I had a cheese & onion panini today, with salad garnish (including onions). Snogging partner warned!! (Even though teeth cleaned & mouthwash!!)

)Must be annoying if you hate onion though)

TheArtfulScreamer1 · 31/10/2024 18:35

Onion I can cope with but what's the deal with pea shoots on everything, every meal I've ordered over the last couple of years seems to come with a bloody pea shoot garnish.

twentysevendresses · 31/10/2024 18:38

I bloody love raw onion, so wouldn't be bothered by this, but I've never bought a sandwich (or anything food related) that came with raw onion unless stated. I don't think this is a standard thing 🤷‍♀️

CharlotteLucas3 · 31/10/2024 18:40

I think some people must have a sensitivity to raw onion because I find it almost painful if I get any in my mouth. I can eat it cooked if it's pureed and there isn't too much of it. Oh but bizarrely, I can eat onion bhajis!

FrostyGlitter · 31/10/2024 18:40

I once bought an egg mayo sandwich there was raw onion in it! 😡
This was before food labelling came in (I'm old)

Ohwtfnow · 31/10/2024 18:46

Fried onion = delicious.

raw onion = foul, overpowering and makes you stink. It’s all I can taste for the next 24 hours if I eat some.

and onion, cooked or raw, upsets my tummy so much since I hit middle age. I’d rather it was left out.

Tara336 · 31/10/2024 18:51

I feel the same about tomato that gets snuck into sandwiches

YellowphantGrey · 31/10/2024 18:52

This is exactly how I feel about Mayo.

TheNinkyNonkyIsATardis · 31/10/2024 18:52

I quite like a wafer thin smattering of red onion, but they usually put ugly great chunks in everything. Sigh.

That is cultural. Some nations love it, especially in salads, not just raw
When I was working in a kitchen, to be honest, yes, we would put it not only in salads but into sandwich fillings also - yes, raw , but also all the content of the menu were detailed under each meal, so?

Flipzandchipz · 31/10/2024 18:57

So pleased it isn’t just me! I will ask for no onion if it is clear it on the menu that there will be onion involved but the issue is when they sneak it in. Then when you realise they will be sneaky onions and you try and remember to ask for no onions you’re not always safe. I remember asking for no onion at the local cafe we go to and they misheard and gave me extra 🙈 🤣

Ginkypig · 31/10/2024 18:59

I really enjoy raw onions so that wouldn’t be a problem for me.

I get it though, I absolutely loathe tomatoes and they are similar in that they turn up in all sorts of things when you don’t expect it so I have learnt to just get used to asking for no tomatoes when I order something (not everything obviously) even when I’m not sure if there will be I just say at the end of what I order a simple oh and if there is any tomato with that can you leave them off.

QueenofLouisiana · 31/10/2024 18:59

I agree. I don’t like it either. Bit into a cheese and salad sandwich and there it was- urgh! If I know it’s on the menu, I ask for it to be removed, but I need a heads up.

ClairDeLaLune · 31/10/2024 19:01

YANBU, i can’t eat it, it makes me feel ill. Fucking hate it. So sick of it being added to everything. Especially tiny pieces that are difficult to pick out.

Plate8 · 31/10/2024 19:04

I agree it is gross and gives stinky breath.

Also agree with pp about mayo, it’s everywhere.

DilemmaDelilah · 31/10/2024 19:11

I like raw onion, but it should absolutely be mentioned on the menu description. I think the only thing you can do is to ask - every time - whether it contains onion and to ask for no onion if the response is yes.

this is what I do about pepper (the condiment) chilli and mustard. Everything seems to have chilli in it nowadays.

YANBU - as a hater of onion, both raw AND cooked, I always ask for no onion when ordering in restaurants/takeaways, but nothing drives me to tears more than seeing a meal in a supermarket that looks absolutely delicious, only to find it contains chunks of onion. I spend more time attempting to pick them out than I do eating the meal.

Lucywilloe · 31/10/2024 19:16

Loving all these comments and particularly the anti onion brigade ☺ Honestly, I eat one bit of onion, even just a smear of the foul slice that I've surgically removed from the bread and I taste it for the rest of the day). It's just all those added extras though isn't it! Mayo, mustard, crispy onions..give me a heads up and I'll tell you whether it makes the meal better or worse. Just give me the choice. A ham sandwich is a ham sandwich and if i want ham and crispy onions I'll let you know 😂

"no onion please"

Problem solved.

It's not as simple as that. Even places that write up a poetic schpiel about their ingredients, don't include onion information in it. So when an unexpected raw onion shows up in your dish it's a genuine surprise. I don't mind cooked onion and I quite enjoy onion marmalade but get these stinking raw rings of hell outta my plate!
