Incident in bar aibu?

Growlingteddybear · 27/10/2024 10:52

Went out last night with a friend. In a different town to usual so weren't familiar with the bars. Thought we would try somewhere that looked nice. I went to the bar and asked if they had any malibu. Bar man said no but we have 2 similar spirits. He handed me a bottle and said smell it to see if I wanted it. I did but it was a dark rum, not sweet like malibu which I fancied. I politely explained I couldn't really tell from the smell so he said try a shot. He then handed me an almost empty spirit bottle. It had literally a drop in the bottom. I assumed he was letting me taste it so I started to drink it and with no warning at all he grabbed the bottle out of my mouth. He banged my tooth and lip and shouted don't drink it! I was that shocked I just turned away and we left. I felt like an idiot at first but when nearly an hour later my mouth still hurt I was angry. I get now it was a misunderstanding but he hurt me. Was I in the wrong?

I don't get what he meant by 'try a shot' or why he handed you a bottle if he didn't want you to drink it. Bizarre behaviour from the barman.

SoupDragon · 27/10/2024 10:57

You went to drink it from the bottle rather than asking/waiting for a shot glass?

CrispyCrumpets · 27/10/2024 10:59

So you had no glass to pour into? Yeah definitely weird. If it was just a tiny bit left I would assume that he was inviting me to drink from the bottle. I guess he had some other idea, like he was going to get a glass next? It's an unfortunate misunderstanding, I'd try to forget about it if I were you.

Asparename · 27/10/2024 11:00

Why would you drink from spirit bottle? Sounds weird and unhygienic.

This. His behaviour was unacceptable. What does your mouth look like this morning?

If there was only a drop left in it; so no one else would be using it afterwards, it's not unhygienic. And if the barman was expecting OP to drink from a glass, why would he hand her the bottle?

Procrastinates · 27/10/2024 11:04

So he said try a shot and without waiting for him to get a glass you drank from the bottle. Why would you do that???

SauviGone · 27/10/2024 11:05

I assume he was about to grab a glass for you to pour it into.

I wouldn’t have gone to drink it out of the bottle in the first place.

Why would you think an establishment would let customers stand at the bar taste-testing spirits straight out of the bottle.

TSMWEL · 27/10/2024 11:06

Was the second bottle the same as the first? I'm confused. Did you already try a shot of the first drink and he passed you the second one to smell and you went to drink it?

Dragonflysparkles · 27/10/2024 11:07

I also think the issue is you tried to slug from the bottle. Which is quite odd. Why did you not say yes please and wait for a glass, why did you try to drink from the bottle?

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 27/10/2024 11:08

I think you’re both in the wrong.

He shouldn’t have hurt you, but also you can’t stand at the bar necking drink from the bottle. Very weird behaviour.

Maybe take some ibuprofen and chalk it up to a weird event.

JC03745 · 27/10/2024 11:08

I'm confused. Did you bring out 2 bottles? 1 was a dark rum and the other had very little in it? Why didn't you ask for a shot glass? If I saw someone swigging from a liquor bottle, I'd assume that were absolutely pissed! As you said, it was a misunderstanding!
Sorry, but what do you want from this? Are you planning on going back explaining YOU drank from the bottle and it hit your lip/tooth? 😕

Magnastorm · 27/10/2024 11:09

Hurting you isn't great, of course, but it sounds like a reaction to you doing the utterly, utterly fucking odd thing of taking a swig from the bottle.

I mean, surely you can see that you would never, ever do that?

BleachedJumper · 27/10/2024 11:09

If this was a nice bar, it’s really not a good look to have customers pouring a bottle straight down them, regardless of how little liquid you know there to be in the bottle.

I think it was an unfortunate and embarrassing incident, and I’d be feeling a bit fragile but you’re probably best to forget about it.

I don’t think he hurt her on purpose, it was an accident. As he tried to stop her swigging from the bottle.

Doyoumind · 27/10/2024 11:10

I can't understand why you thought it was ok to drink from the bottle. Did it not strike you as inappropriate?

FupaTrooper · 27/10/2024 11:10

You were odd not to ask for a glass.

He was massively out of line to grab it and hurt you.

He should have realised it was a misunderstanding and just let it go which is the professional and classy thing to do. He could have easily let you taste it from the bottle as it was already at your mouth.

Oh come on. The barman probably would have been sacked if his manager saw him allowing a customer to do this.

How’s it classy to let someone swig from the bottle?

If you were at a bar, and saw the barman letting someone take a swig from a bottle of spirits, would you stay and order a drink?

Herewegoagainandagainandagain · 27/10/2024 11:16

He reacted to you ridiculously trying to drink out a spirit bottle, you were silly to do it, he accidentally bumped your tooth.

Non event, move on.

takealettermsjones · 27/10/2024 11:20

I think he was offering you the bottle to smell. He'd told you there were two similar spirits and said you could smell them. You smelled the first, and this was the second. I think him saying "try a shot" is separate - I would have taken it in a salesman kind of way, as in "don't knock it til you've tried it, why not just go for it," not "have some of this for free." A misunderstanding. Hope your mouth is ok now.

MummyJ36 · 27/10/2024 11:27

I think you both got the wrong end of the stick and he was a bit rude. Under different circumstances it would probably make for a funny story. Did he not say anything when he grabbed it back? Did you not explain you thought he was offering you a shot from the bottle?

Yes it was the second spirit, so he offered it to smell, if she liked it the response would be, yes please I will have a shot, or if she didn’t like the smell she could say no thanks. He clearly didn’t anticipate she’d try to drink it out the bottle, and he’s jumped to stop her. Accidentally hurting her in the process.

op just put it behind you. it’s one of these embarrassing things you will laugh about at some point,
