To find huge off shore wind turbines unsettling?

So, I'm all for the wind power etc don't get me wrong. And I don't mind them "interrupting" the view.

It's the sheer size of them.

Currently sitting on a beach in Norfolk, looking out to see, the wind turbines look closes but are actually 2 miles away. It's because of the sea distorting distance. But also, mainly they so freaking MASSIVE.

Its all a bit freaky and they creep me out a bit.

Same with any big engineering tbh

My 16yo has a strange desire to be a wind turbine engineer. I mean, the highest thing he has climbed thus far is a bunk bed ...

PumpkinSpiceMuffins · 27/10/2024 10:06

YANBU. Their construction and operation is extremely detrimental to wildlife. Ecocidal blights on the land.

Whereas of course all other types of power plant are beneficial to wildlife…

They fascinate me for some reason.

Aposterhasnoname · 27/10/2024 10:09

I hate big things, its a recognised phobia, wind turbines freak me out, but also very tall buildings, huge cruise ships, even planes and trains sometimes.

Yanbu. The fact that they are so big and reach down all the way to the bottom of the sea is freaky.

Those big arch bridges that go between mountains give me the same feeling.

Lovelysummerdays · 27/10/2024 10:11

I quite like them. Which is a good thing as there a few wind farms where I am. If we are going to have cleaner energy then wind/ wave power is the future surely? It’s certainly an area of growth and If be encouraging my kids into the field if they had an interest.

HangryBear · 27/10/2024 10:12

I love big things. I find them fascinating. Anything huge fascinates me- whether it’s man made or things like whales or prehistoric megafauna.
I think it’s amazing we can manufacture something do enormous.

Mooburger · 27/10/2024 10:12

Meglophobia?

They line the road near where I was born so I always associate them with "being home" but I don't love huge mechanisms on display usually.

DangerMouseAndPenfoldx · 27/10/2024 10:13

I love them, but yes the sheer size of them is difficult to comprehend.

There are some “just off” a beach we go to regularly. I assumed they were the same size as the ones on land, and therefore about 5 miles away. I was stunned to find out that they are actually 50 miles away!

Garlicbest · 27/10/2024 10:15

YADNBU to find them a bit disconcertingly 'alien tech'. But, then, so are coal-fired power stations, coal mines, oil & gas rigs and those gasometers they used to store our gas in. Wind & wave turbines are not harmless either, but they are out there keeping the lights on for us!

Overtheatlantic · 27/10/2024 10:21

They have them in Southern California, outside of Palm Springs and you can’t see them until you come around a bend and then there they are, looming ahead. Quite surreal.

Do you understand that engineers don’t climb the things they design?

It’s true that oil drilling is also harmful. But don’t be delusional in thinking that new forms of energy like wind and solar are “green.” The only solution to the various environmental crises we face is reductions in production and consumption..

HiccupHorrendousHaddock · 27/10/2024 10:26

I think they are beautiful. I love watching them turn, it’s so graceful.

Ack, it was just a bit of a joke. Never mind.

DH is an engineer who works on wind turbines. He has been to the top of a few offshore ones.

There's a great gallery in the science museum (London) which has models you can get inside and activities all about wind power and transformers.

Someone paddled out to the windfarm off the Sussex coast on their paddle board. DH says it would have made a lot of people quite anxious, and not just because of -no buoyancy aid, -9hours of paddleboarding, -suncream!

Horrible things that are not that eco friendly when you consider the transportation of them and the damage they do to wildlife.

How wildlife friendly is a coal/gas/nuclear fired power station if you also include manufacture of, transport of, and installation of all of the constituent parts, as well as clearing the ground for the power station buildings and all personnel spaces.

WowIlikereallyhateyou · 27/10/2024 10:55

I would sooner them be out at sea than next to where people live though.

Ihaveoflate · 27/10/2024 10:59

I also have a weird fear of large manmade things, particularly the hull of boats. It's just the sheer hulking-ness of them!

Glad it's not just me 😂

Alpolonia · 27/10/2024 11:00

Yep, they give me the willies too - those and the land ones. I got spooked driving past them!

Pippa246 · 27/10/2024 11:00

YANBU. I have a phobia of massive cranes and just looking at your picture is freaking me out 😱

HowardTJMoon · 27/10/2024 11:01

I'd much rather look out at a bunch of wind turbines than Dungeness nuclear power station.
