To find huge off shore wind turbines unsettling?

So, I'm all for the wind power etc don't get me wrong. And I don't mind them "interrupting" the view.

It's the sheer size of them.

Currently sitting on a beach in Norfolk, looking out to see, the wind turbines look closes but are actually 2 miles away. It's because of the sea distorting distance. But also, mainly they so freaking MASSIVE.

Its all a bit freaky and they creep me out a bit.

Same with any big engineering tbh

An now @binkythepoodle I love pylons! I think because they're not solid? And also they're not that big. I mean they're big, but in a normal way rather than an incomprehensible largeness.

fandjango · 27/10/2024 12:31

I'm with you! they give me the absolute heebie jeebies. Wind turbines, huge power stations, big coal chimneys all make my blood run cold looking at them and i've no idea why!

lifeturnsonadime · 27/10/2024 12:38

We cruised past huge one in the North Sea when on a cruise ship. I think they are mesmerising.

MrsSkylerWhite · 27/10/2024 12:39

I think they’re beautiful, find them mesmerising.

gano · 27/10/2024 12:41

I love them! But I do work for an energy company, so I'm biased.

@BeyondMyWits i didn't say that other options are also not eco friendly. I was merely pointing out that the wind turbines are touted as being green energy when they are not.

They are one of the greenest of the various renewable options that are suitable for this part of Europe. Unless you plan to live in darkness then electricity is the only viable future we have.

SlashBeef · 27/10/2024 12:45

Big mechanical things at sea are pure horror for me. Oil rigs, massive ships, huge buoys. Absolutely not.

FloralGums · 27/10/2024 12:47

I think they are magnificent, like Spitfires rising out from the mist.

Twofifty · 27/10/2024 12:47

I love them, but am deluded and think it would be fun to swim over to one, as they are just a stone's throw away. 😁

Alpolonia · 27/10/2024 12:51

binkythepoodle · 27/10/2024 12:13

I don't mind them. But in a similar way I cannot abide electricity pylons. It's not just their size, it's all the angles, and the fact they could quite believably turn into something like the tripods from the war of the worlds 🤮

Yes, I think this is where my fear started. Remember the 70s safety ad about the kite being caught in the them?! Scared me half to death.

There was a tv programme in the 80s called The Tripods which also reminded me of them.

TenderChicken · 27/10/2024 12:52

Yeah I also have a mild fear of large things, particularly when they are in water.

Wind turbines are fine from a distance... but when I get closer I feel really unnerved!

It’s true that oil drilling is also harmful. But don’t be delusional in thinking that new forms of energy like wind and solar are “green.” The only solution to the various environmental crises we face is reductions in production and consumption..

And population

YANBU. Their construction and operation is extremely detrimental to wildlife. Ecocidal blights on the land.

Fuck me, wait until you see the damage to wildlife we're going to see if we don't start building a fuckton more massive wind turbines.

They're in the sea.

Bloody sight less damaging than climate change.

I agree, I don't know what they were thinking when they closed all the coal fed power stations

They were thinking that burning fossil fuels is a massive contributor to the climate emergency so we should stop doing it, as soon as possible (and probably sooner.)

tanstaafl · 27/10/2024 13:07

I like them. Peaceful, quietly going about their way.

But there’s always ONE of the buggers not turning.

Toottooot · 27/10/2024 13:10

Mr Trump is not a big fan either.

angieloumc · 27/10/2024 13:19

Anything enormous like that terrifies me including propellers, airships, submarines, gives me the creeps.

Words · 27/10/2024 13:23

I despise them. The onshore ones even more.

If you think these are freaky and frightening, then try climate change.

Jessie1259 · 27/10/2024 13:36

I'm amazed at how many people like them, to me they're an absolute blot on the landscape. Hideous things right up there with huge pylons. Fine in an industrial setting but absolutely ruining the natural beauty of the countryside and killing thousands of birds every year. I wish we had better options.

Bdjdjsns · 27/10/2024 13:38

So what if they're big OP. Get over it. They have to be big to generate the electricity

DancefloorAcrobatics · 27/10/2024 13:45

I think they are a necessity and part of the modern landscape.

They are not perfect, but a bit better than coal mining and nuclear power stations... although I've read somewhere that the rota blades are also an environmental disaster.

I guess if we don't want them, we need to consume less power...

Sia8899 · 27/10/2024 13:46

There is one out to sea near where I live and I find it so interesting that they look a different size depending on whether you're close by at sea level (they look pretty small) or further away up a hill (they look much bigger). I'd like to take one of the boat trips to see them one day to understand their true size and how much noise they make. But I can't say I've ever found them very ominous even though they're a bit industrial. I would rather them where there's not much to see (even though I love looking at the sea, there's not much on the surface other than boats) than in a beautiful countryside spot. Either way, I'd prefer to look at turbines compared to a coal mine or power plant
