To find huge off shore wind turbines unsettling?

So, I'm all for the wind power etc don't get me wrong. And I don't mind them "interrupting" the view.

It's the sheer size of them.

Currently sitting on a beach in Norfolk, looking out to see, the wind turbines look closes but are actually 2 miles away. It's because of the sea distorting distance. But also, mainly they so freaking MASSIVE.

Its all a bit freaky and they creep me out a bit.

Same with any big engineering tbh

I feel the same way about things like this, big ferries, power stations, except I love them. It's a creepiness that's a massive draw to me.

Geranen · 27/10/2024 11:02

Actually eeriness is a better word for how I feel about it.

c3pu · 27/10/2024 11:03

I love them, so elegant

Attelina · 27/10/2024 11:03

@BeyondMyWits i didn't say that other options are also not eco friendly. I was merely pointing out that the wind turbines are touted as being green energy when they are not.

Geranen · 27/10/2024 11:05

@Attelina there're more than one axis on which that can be measured. It's not as simple as you make out. Have you ever lived in a country with really bad air pollution?

HarrietJonesFlydaleNorth · 27/10/2024 11:06

Ooh I don't mind the bit above sea level it's the under the sea bit that makes my toes curl.

I can't even manage thinking about it or looking at diagrams or models too closely. Especially deep sea trenches. 😫

I used to get the same feeling driving on the roads round where the rail freight terminal is near Daventry. All the signs and roads are designed mainly for lorries so everything is just a little bit bigger and wider and it properly throws me off! Gives me the willies as someone else so aptly put it!

I also have a weird fear of large manmade things, particularly the hull of boats. It's just the sheer hulking-ness of them!

Glad it's not just me 😂

Oh no that is what feels like a hugely irrational fear for me too - I can’t explain it even to myself. Never heard of anyone else experiencing it

EasternStandard · 27/10/2024 11:14

I find them an interruption to a nicer clear horizon at sea, they are massive

On land not so bad but only to drive past rather than a view

MrsForgetalot · 27/10/2024 11:18

I find them freaky - grew up in the 70s and it’s just a bit too alien sci fi. Most of the time, I just look with my adult brain and see wind turbines. But other times if I’m thinking about something else I’ll just get a really creepy sensation as if they’re actually sentient.

Beansandneedles · 27/10/2024 11:18

I hear you OP. Sometimes it's hard to wrap your head around. My BIL works in production for wind turbine blades and the biggest he's worked on was 84m long. That's almost 5 buses end to end.

Have you seen the new bladeless design which are meant to be better for wildlife?

Skybluecoat · 27/10/2024 11:20

I live near Rampion wind farm and I love them.

AAudreyHorne · 27/10/2024 11:26

Completelyjo · 27/10/2024 10:24

Do you understand that engineers don’t climb the things they design?

My cousin is an engineer who works on wind turbines.
They do indeed have to climb them.
So your comment is not only a little bit condescending, but wrong.

MayaPinion · 27/10/2024 11:31

I think they're stunning, almost like sculptures and they give us clean, green, energy without destroying the planet.

OneEye · 27/10/2024 11:33

Mooburger · 27/10/2024 10:12

Meglophobia?

They line the road near where I was born so I always associate them with "being home" but I don't love huge mechanisms on display usually.

So if I love them, am I a meglophile?

rainfallpurevividcat · 27/10/2024 11:34

They are awesome in a good and bad way. I love massive engineering and construction feats though. Big steel suspension bridges. I even love the QE2 bridge, it's rather beautiful. I love old and new windmills.

Dramatic · 27/10/2024 11:36

My DH fixes offshore wind turbines for a living, there are absolutely massive and actually have lifts inside so they don't have to climb all the way up. I find them quite fascinating which is good since he sends me random selfies from the top 😂

Aposterhasnoname · 27/10/2024 10:09

I hate big things, its a recognised phobia, wind turbines freak me out, but also very tall buildings, huge cruise ships, even planes and trains sometimes.

my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/21742-megalophobia

My husband and I both have this - I did not know it had a name. I hate standing next to a plane waiting to board for example and don't get me started on cruise ships 😱😱😱

Newterm · 27/10/2024 11:43

I don’t like them because they remind me of robots

TenWeeCaramelJoeys · 27/10/2024 09:48

My 16yo has a strange desire to be a wind turbine engineer. I mean, the highest thing he has climbed thus far is a bunk bed ...

It's likely a lot will actually be done with drones, so he still could.

stargirl1701 · 27/10/2024 12:00

I really like them. Weirdly, they remind of swans. Is it the gliding...? I don't know.

EmmaMaria · 27/10/2024 12:00

Attelina · 27/10/2024 10:45

Horrible things that are not that eco friendly when you consider the transportation of them and the damage they do to wildlife.

ibb.co/D9YKC0h

What is your alternative? And I assume you don't use electricity?

Samcro · 27/10/2024 12:01

i like them, find them nice to watch.

Attelina · 27/10/2024 12:02

@EmmaMaria what are you talking about? Of course I use electricity.

All I am saying is that wind turbines are not as eco friendly as they would have you believe.

I so t believe in all this climate change crap and green energy is mostly a huge con.

binkythepoodle · 27/10/2024 12:13

I don't mind them. But in a similar way I cannot abide electricity pylons. It's not just their size, it's all the angles, and the fact they could quite believably turn into something like the tripods from the war of the worlds 🤮

Ah - so climate change is crap? Well that explains a lot about your post.
