To find huge off shore wind turbines unsettling?

So, I'm all for the wind power etc don't get me wrong. And I don't mind them "interrupting" the view.

It's the sheer size of them.

Currently sitting on a beach in Norfolk, looking out to see, the wind turbines look closes but are actually 2 miles away. It's because of the sea distorting distance. But also, mainly they so freaking MASSIVE.

Its all a bit freaky and they creep me out a bit.

Same with any big engineering tbh

There's something so vast and pitiless about them that sort of makes me feel like they were put there by an advanced alien race.
I don't dislike them as such but yes, unsettling.

malmi · 27/10/2024 13:50

If you're ever up close to one (on land) try lying down underneath looking up so the blades sweep towards you as they rotate. It gives your body a little sense of impending death with every spin.

Sansan18 · 27/10/2024 13:50

I live just over a mile from a wind farm and hear a constant noise from them. In return the company provide £120 per year towards my electric bill which wouldn't even cover a month's power.
Companies have all the power and finances to argue for them and get planning permission, then apply to make them higher and increase the number of them.

These are one of the engineering wonders of our time. The more the better

On the thread about weird holes, it turned out that the ADHDers were weirdly attracted to them. I LOVE big things including being a bit freaked out by them. I wonder if the meglophiles are also ND.

Do you understand that engineers don’t climb the things they design?

Yeah we do.

@BeyondMyWits i didn't say that other options are also not eco friendly. I was merely pointing out that the wind turbines are touted as being green energy when they are not.

What about them is not green?

Ooh, could you link the thread please?

Tulipvase · 27/10/2024 14:05

There is a clip on instagram of 3 guys doing a podcast and they are talking about wind turbines, one of them basically thought that they were giant fans and their purpose was to cool the planet, and that’s how they help global warming.

How wildlife friendly is a coal/gas/nuclear fired power station if you also include manufacture of, transport of, and installation of all of the constituent parts, as well as clearing the ground for the power station buildings and all personnel spaces.

This is whataboutism. Two wrongs don’t make a right. Wind power is still a horrible ecological assault on the last.

MrsTerryPratchett · 27/10/2024 14:16

@1WanderingWomble it was ages ago. I have no idea where I'd find it! Flowers

SnapdragonToadflax · 27/10/2024 14:18

I find them beautiful, but I've never been very close to them. I hate big things though, they freak me out so I suspect I wouldn't like them up close.

I work near a lot of skyscrapers in London and I have to not look up even close as I feel dizzy and panicky if I think about how big they are. Also hate whales!

On the last what?

Every huge difference industrial building is "bad for the environment". But wind power isn't "horrible". It's sustainable electricity.

I don't mind them. But in a similar way I cannot abide electricity pylons. It's not just their size, it's all the angles, and the fact they could quite believably turn into something like the tripods from the war of the worlds 🤮

I’ll just leave this here

I’ve found them eerie since I saw this image of 2 men hugging when trapped on one. Prior to that I found them quite majestic. Not any more .

They’re destroying the Pacific Northwest.

There are hideous electricity pylons stomping across the fields near me. Nobody ever seems to object to them.

This is the most horrific thing I think I've ever read on MN 😱

No they're not.

Facebook ≠ the real world.

I'm not dx as nd, but I have many nd traits

LinesAndLinesAndLinesAndLines · 27/10/2024 15:24

I have megalophobia and submechanophobia so these freak me out on so many levels. It's bad enough they are so big without thinking about what's going on under the water. Gives me the heebie jeebies. Envy

Bedtimewoes91 · 27/10/2024 15:27

I once drove past a convoy transporting one of the propellors down the motorway. I couldn't believe how big it was! You don't realise until you're up close, it is a bit spooky

Nogaxeh · 27/10/2024 15:31

There's a wind farm near us that I've walked up to a few times and, when I'm close to them I'm a bit unnerved. The tips of the blades are travelling really quite fast. But viewed from the distance of your photo I think they're majestic and beautiful. When there's some low cloud and you can see the blades turning in and out of the cloud I think it's wonderful.

HarrietJonesFlydaleNorth · 27/10/2024 15:34

Ooh has anyone here seen pictures of people in the giant crystal cave in Mexico?
Now that's something to mess with your size perception!

They fascinate me for some reason.

They fascinate me too. I love their design.

If they impacted me with a noise disturbance, I wouldn't be such a fan. And if they are not friendly to the environment, I'd equally be anti.

But otherwise I am also fascinated
