To feel let down by Sandi Toksvig's Bake Off Comments?

Sandi has given a few interviews saying her brain was atrophying on Bake Off and she had to leave for her own sanity. I know she's a comedian so her words are partly for effect - but it's so disrespectful to the people who love the show.

Richard Osman tweeted "I honestly don't think you should present shows you wouldn't watch" and I think that's right. She's really gone down in my estimation.

It would have shown more integrity to not take the huge pay cheque in the first place rather than phone it in for 3 years and then rubbish the show that's been paying your mortgage for you.

For the record, it's quite possible to be a very intelligent and well educated person and still be interested in cake - or at least, in other people, which is what that role is really about.

I've gone right off her!

I'm sure she's devastated.

SpanThatWorld · 11/10/2024 17:03

I don't always love the jobs that have paid my mortgage.

GrandHighPoohbah · 11/10/2024 17:04

Yeah, I miss the old Sandi who was irreverant yet intelligent and fun. Now she's doing a lot of "statement making", which I find rather tedious.

PennyFarthingRider · 11/10/2024 17:05

I don't think there's much point in pretending that the GBBO is anything other than a TV programme made for profit, Sure, it's also a much-loved national/international institution, but it's also just a show, not staffed by angels floating about on clouds. They're just TV presenters doing a job.

I remember the blog by Danni/Danny/Dani, the A and E medic who made it to the final in a series from ages ago, which was nice, but also deeply realistic about her experience of being in it. She said something like 'Everyone was nice, but you also never forgot that they were making a product, and the product wasn't you.'

PaminaMozart · 11/10/2024 17:06

I do not give a toss about ST and GBBO.

However, she dropped WAY down in my estimation when she started talking nonsense about gender politics and getting on a soapbox claiming that Transwomen are Women.

Livinginaclock · 11/10/2024 17:07

It's fine to feel that way, not exactly great to say it publicly, but then she thinks men can be women too soooooo...

Quite.

I was thinking the below explained a lot:

Sandi has given a few interviews saying her brain was atrophying

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 11/10/2024 17:08

Wasn't she on Gogglebox? The epitome of brain rot TV that she wanted to feature in.

Dramatic · 11/10/2024 17:08

I don't know why people care so much. I love Big Brother but if one of the presenters said this I wouldn't care less, I know it's not everyone's cup of tea

mynewhouse · 11/10/2024 17:09

I went right off her when I started reading her autobiography. I quite liked her up to that point, but I had her all wrong. I can’t even remember what it was specifically, I just remember thinking she’s a bit obnoxious.

ShowerOfShites · 11/10/2024 17:09

Personally I prefer it when people say what they think.

I don't have to agree with them though.

TheDandyLion · 11/10/2024 17:09

"I honestly don't think you should present shows you wouldn't watch" and I think that's right.

She might have liked it before presenting it, then changed and mind and left.

Yep.
Party of Women.
Whoever says they are a woman is one.
FFS.
I bet Sandi isn't considering dating a transwoman any time soon.

StillAtTheRestaurant · 11/10/2024 17:11

I stopped watching Bake Off when it moved to C4 so the joke's on you Sandy! 😉

AppropriateAdult · 11/10/2024 17:11

I'm no great fan (of Sandi or of Bake Off), but wasn't she talking about how tedious it was to make it, rather than what an awful show it is to watch? Those are very different things. I can well imagine that standing around for hours waiting for cakes to bake would be really really boring work, no matter how well paid.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 11/10/2024 17:12

I've had plenty of jobs that felt like that. They paid the bills, but I'm bloody glad I left them.

betterangels · 11/10/2024 17:12

I haven't liked all the jobs I've had. They paid the bills. I would probably have done what she did, except talk about it in the press.

Downplayit · 11/10/2024 17:12

But it's a bit different working intensively for a few months on the programme to watching it for an hour each week whilst you wind down at the end of the day. I don't think she is insulting anyone who watches the show.

Yes, exactly.

😱I love Gogglebox! How rude. I might start a thread about how awful you are 😁

toastofthetown · 11/10/2024 17:16

She was hired to host Bake Off, which she did a cracking job of, not love it forever. Lots of people work for the pay check and good for Sandi for taking it. She’s not slated the show, anyone involved in it, or its audience. Just said it’s not for her and she’s not cake person.

She’s not the first and won’t be last to do a role she didn’t love. Half of the cast of Twilight were clearly struggling through the last few. And Christopher Plummer hated the Sound of Music for years, which didn’t disappoint me or dampen my love for Captain von Trapp.

Snorlaxo · 11/10/2024 17:16

She’s not saying that it’s TV for people lacking brain cells, she said working on the TV programme made her feel like that which is a legitimate complaint.

Do you think that anyone working on the programme is doing it for the love of it? Of course they are in it for the paycheck and further revenue streams that BO brings like cookbooks

Frankensteinslittlefriend · 11/10/2024 17:18

Goodness no need to take it personally op. 😳

you do understand she was just one of four presenters right?

porridgecake · 11/10/2024 17:20

She is an awful woman and not very intelligent. Take no notice.
