To feel let down by Sandi Toksvig's Bake Off Comments?

Sandi has given a few interviews saying her brain was atrophying on Bake Off and she had to leave for her own sanity. I know she's a comedian so her words are partly for effect - but it's so disrespectful to the people who love the show.

Richard Osman tweeted "I honestly don't think you should present shows you wouldn't watch" and I think that's right. She's really gone down in my estimation.

It would have shown more integrity to not take the huge pay cheque in the first place rather than phone it in for 3 years and then rubbish the show that's been paying your mortgage for you.

For the record, it's quite possible to be a very intelligent and well educated person and still be interested in cake - or at least, in other people, which is what that role is really about.

I've gone right off her!

If you're at a point where you can't just watch a programme because you enjoy it and the presenters personal opinions about said programme are a problem for you, then you probably need to switch off your TV set and do something less boring instead.

It's a pretty basic requirement of a presenter to be enthusiastic about the show they present. Obviously some do fake their enthusiasm, but the viewer often senses that and is turned off by it. A presenter rubbishing the show they presented is breaking the contract with the viewer.

But she isn’t presenting it anymore.

But it's also just a TV programme. It's not important. It's not like slagging a patient or a child in your class.

People sitting on their bums at home watching a TV programme are not vulnerable service users.

If some people have elevated it to more than that then that's on them. But it's just a TV programme.

I'm no great fan (of Sandi or of Bake Off), but wasn't she talking about how tedious it was to make it, rather than what an awful show it is to watch? Those are very different things. I can well imagine that standing around for hours waiting for cakes to bake would be really really boring work, no matter how well paid.

She has always struck me as being the sort of person who doesn’t actually like the general public.

I went right off her when I started reading her autobiography. I quite liked her up to that point, but I had her all wrong. I can’t even remember what it was specifically, I just remember thinking she’s a bit obnoxious.

I used to like her until I worked with a woman who’d been at school with her and who she’d bullied mercilessly.

It’s often said that you never can tell who’s nice and who’s nasty on TV- you can be surprised both ways!

Crikeyalmighty · 01/07/2025 10:16

if you think plenty of presenters genuinely have belief and integrity in what they are presenting - then you are a bit deluded - at the end of the day it’s a job - these people still have bills and mortgages and sometimes rent like the rest of us - difference I guess is she’s been honest and upfront .

Jennps · 01/07/2025 10:30

She’s a comedian? You could’ve fooled me.

Yep.
Party of Women.
Whoever says they are a woman is one.
FFS.
I bet Sandi isn't considering dating a transwoman any time soon.

Why should she be considering that? She’s married.

timetodecide2345 · 01/07/2025 10:41

I can’t stand the woman so her comments don’t surprise me. She’s clever enough to be able to present an air of getting down and dirty with the commoners when really she is a self absorbed arse.

Absolutely this. They are playing a role and targeting a particular audience.

I always roll my eyes when I see Alexander Armstrong on his quiz show (which I never choose to watch, but sometimes see the end of while waiting for the next prog) fulsomely congratulating a contestant on winning £1,200. I'm sure his fee per programme is a huge multiple of that! It's definitely a 'lords and peasants' scenario.

But Alexander Armstrong is genial, polite and jolly, so fair play to him. That's all he needs to be - as long as no-one expects sincerity, integrity etc.

Ha,ha, not sure why this thread has been resurrected after 10 months. I definitely haven't been ruminating on this for all that time.

But - I've re-read the thread and I stand by my original post. As did 70% of posters who voted.

I was happy with my delusions and am still gutted to have had them shattered!

Vichy feminist and vichy gay. Should be ashamed of herself.

SuburbanSprawl · 01/07/2025 13:44

At the moment those who've never liked her are outnumbered about two to one by those who used to like her but don't anymore. If this ends up in fisticuffs, it's not even going to be close.

Me, I like her. Always have.

The Party of Women has nothing to do with Sandi Toksvig. They are fully in support of the female kind of women.
She was a founder of the Women's Equality Party, most equal and important of whom are the male ones.

Absolutely. POW is run by Kellie-Jay Keen who very definitely stands up for women and does not include men in that.

Sandie Tokvig was involved in WEP which decided to include men in their definition of women, and it imploded accordingly. Sandie - - and all the other Vichy feminists who ran WEP - should be bloody well ashamed of themselves.
