To feel let down by Sandi Toksvig's Bake Off Comments?

Sandi has given a few interviews saying her brain was atrophying on Bake Off and she had to leave for her own sanity. I know she's a comedian so her words are partly for effect - but it's so disrespectful to the people who love the show.

Richard Osman tweeted "I honestly don't think you should present shows you wouldn't watch" and I think that's right. She's really gone down in my estimation.

It would have shown more integrity to not take the huge pay cheque in the first place rather than phone it in for 3 years and then rubbish the show that's been paying your mortgage for you.

For the record, it's quite possible to be a very intelligent and well educated person and still be interested in cake - or at least, in other people, which is what that role is really about.

I've gone right off her!

She appears to have entered the "Margoyles" phase of life and has become a tiresome old twat. She doesn't even know what a woman is anymore - of all things. Shame.

Quite.

I was thinking the below explained a lot:

Sandi has given a few interviews saying her brain was atrophying

Lol.

So we have the tedium of Bake Off to blame for the fact that her brain rotted so much that she no longer knows what a woman is, huh?

I do not give a toss about ST and GBBO.

However, she dropped WAY down in my estimation when she started talking nonsense about gender politics and getting on a soapbox claiming that Transwomen are Women.

Agree with this. She even said she can’t understand all the “fuss” women are making about transwomen in womens’ toilets because toilets they often have a man cleaning them. Utterly stupid comment which dismisses women’s issues about sports, personal care, prisons etc etc etc.
She really is stupid.

Plenty of tiresome young twats around, not sure her age has anything to do with it. And this post is specifically about her bake off comments. Not every Mumsnet discussion has to revert to the trans debate.

I think it's relevant though, isn't it?

You said in your OP that you expected her to have more integrity and you refer to intelligence.

Well I think her comments on the trans stuff have shown that either she hasn't got any integrity or she's not very intelligent (or both).

She's just someone who will say and do whatever is expedient to keep the pay cheques coming in, whether that's presenting a show that bores the arse off her or obediently chanting the TWAW mantra.

Edited

Yeah, it certainly feels like aspects of her character are shining through

Didimum · 12/10/2024 20:14

Working on a show is very different from watching it. Working isn’t for entertainment and she’s entitled to say it wasn’t challenging or enjoyable for her after 3 years.

I love M&S but my brain would also atrophy if I worked there.

It’s Mumsnet. Of course it does 😉

LindorDoubleChoc · 12/10/2024 20:19

She's a gay woman and totally at odds with all the gay women I know and love (quite a number including my sister and a few of my closest friends for decades) so her opining on TWAW is completely relevant.

Of all the people negatively affected by TWAW it is lesbians. So it's completely relevant - her comments on Bake Off prove is that she is happy to go along with whatever to ensure her income. I'm glad that Mumsnet at least has picked up on this.

TheKeatingFive · 12/10/2024 20:43

Exactly this. It's quite something for her to pretend she can't see the implications.

Even if she's in a long term relationship, you'd think she'd understand what that means for those on the dating scene.

Actually can't stand Alison Hammond. Talentless and loud, loud, loud.

I can’t either. She’s incredibly irritating.

Whenwillitgetwarm · 13/10/2024 15:05

I do like Alison’s infectious enthusiasm. She always comes across as though she knows she’s got a great job and really happy to be there no matter what she’s presenting. Akin to the fan of a band being invited onstage to play tambourine!

There was a long period where many presenters affected a cynical style and I think it’s nice to see someone who appears to be genuinely happy.

SmileyHappyPeopleInTheSun · 13/10/2024 15:05

I have to admit that was my impression of her so didn't think she'd do well in bake off tent - but I was wrong I think she actually more talented presenter than I thought and found so far this series it's been one of more enjoyable ones since it got to channel 4 and I think she is a huge part of that.

AgentJohnson · 13/10/2024 15:14

I don’t get why people think that they have to agree with everything a person has ever said. Sometimes, you can agree to disagree without wanting that person cancelled. What has what they paid her got to with it, are only underpaid people allowed to complain about a job.

I don't think anyone has suggested she should be cancelled!

I just expressed irritation with her framing her decision to leave as a triumph of integrity. And then saying she couldn't understand why anybody would find baking interesting when they could just go to the shop and buy a cake.

If you're not a Bake Off fan, then you may well agree with her. But she was happy to take the Bake Off salary for 3 years and people who are fans of the show are entitled to find her comments disappointing.

I like Alison Hammond and Noel Fielding. If they could just ditch Paul Hollywood it would be great. Can’t stand all the ego stroking about handshakes.

Yes he’s the most annoying of all. I went off him when he dumped his wife.

GreyCarpet · 14/10/2024 07:45

It's TV not real life.

Her job his her real life and she has bills to pay. I don't watch it or broadcast TV at all so I have no opinion of her since she was on Number 73 (when I don't remember her enough to have an opinion!)

But surely every single person in the world masks their true feelings about their job whilst their doing it? Or at least has at some point?

If you're at a point where you can't just watch a programme because you enjoy it and the presenters personal opinions abput saod programme are a problem for you, then you probably need to switch off your TV set and do something less boring instead.

GreyCarpet · 14/10/2024 07:57

Argh they're not their.

There are lots of jobs where you wouldn't express your true feelings to the service users you work with. You would moan to your friends, but making comments online which service users could read would be unprofessional.

It's a pretty basic requirement of a presenter to be enthusiastic about the show they present. Obviously some do fake their enthusiasm, but the viewer often senses that and is turned off by it. A presenter rubbishing the show they presented is breaking the contract with the viewer.

Absolutely. My sister works in addiction therapy, for instance. But there are no ‘service users’ here because Sandi Toksvig was not providing a service. She was presenting a TV programme, which continues without her.

VividMaker · 14/10/2024 09:04

I don't understand why you'd feel 'let down' by her, she's someone you don't know who presented a TV show you like and she didn't like working on all that much.

Not it's not because there is no contract.

The contract is between the producer and the presenter.
