To expect my daughter to have access to non halal meat

Bushmillsbabe · 06/10/2024 16:13

My daughters school now has only halal meat available for their school lunches.

I personally do not wish my child to have halal meat, I think its more cruel than other slaughter methods, however this thread is not intended to debate which is worse/better.

She is dairy and gluten intolerant, and her safe options tended to be things like roast chicken, the vegetarian options usually contain dairy. The pork sausages contain gluten so she would have the chicken sausages, she also eats burgers and meatballs but these are now also halal.

So if I don't give her halal meat, she is left with jacket potato with beans every day, which she does eat, but doesn't want to have every day.

I fully respect that Muslim parents wish their child to have halal meat, but am I wrong in thinking my dietary preferences for my daughter should also be respected and she should have access to non halal meat?

I suspect you’re being disingenuous over the “more cruel” aspect. Did you check on the conditions that the non halal chickens were kept in before letting her eat it?

@Gretcort , I’m vegetarian erring towards veganism.
My priority is animal welfare. There is no doubt that slaughter without stunning is much more stressful and cruel. However even if that were not so people should not have ritually slaughtered meat foisted on them. A minority should not be more important than the majority.

Octaviusoctober · 06/10/2024 23:06

Of course you are not being unreasonable and as a secular Christian country who serves normal unadulterated religious food... That what I expect my child to be offered.
. As a world I want us to move away from religion as a close fist in glove every day life experience. So no, I don't agree with it one bit.

Petitchat · 06/10/2024 17:46

We are not a Muslim country.
Therefore the food should be non halal and the Muslim children should bring in packed lunches.

I totally agree. Next it will be everyone is vegetarian cos we can't offend the non meat eaters.

'Tiny minirity' what do you mean? Non Muslims are the minority or that most people don't give a fiddle?

For me buying halal is caving to the minority. They can bring packed lunches. We are a Christian country and halal slaughtering of animals isn't something I am good with either.

The tail is starting to wag the dog.

Totally agree with this.

We ARE a Christian country AND in the majority.

Majority leads therefore packed lunches should be given by those parents who choose not to eat the same as the majority.

Simple, really

Hayley1256 · 07/10/2024 00:32

There are a lot of chains that do Halal meat such as Pizza Express, some Nandos and some KFC's. I don't think most people would check

TwattyMcFuckFace · 07/10/2024 00:34

As I've already clarified (although I thought my original post was clear enough), the 'tiny minority' I was referring to was the parents who refuse to allow their kids to eat halal meat.

The fact it's a tiny minority, allows a lot of schools to go with the cheaper option of making all their meat halal.

To be even clearer, the majority of parents clearly do not have a problem with it, because if they did then schools would have to think again.

TofuTart · 07/10/2024 00:34

Comedycook · 06/10/2024 16:16

Yabu.

Even if it wasn't halal, do you think schools serve up organic, free range hand reared meat....?

If you care so much about animal welfare, go veggie.

This. The animals are getting killed whichever way you do it.
The whole "My way of killing them is better than yours" argument is just weird.
You're still killing them.
I'm sure those who advocate for halal methods think the same about their way of doing it as well.
Go veggie if you're worried about animals.

TofuTart · 07/10/2024 00:35

Also, do you never get takeaways?
The majority of takeaways are halal.
Kebabs, burgers etc

The information is there if the parents are bothered to find out what sort of meat their kids are eating, and how it was killed.

Just like you'd find out any information you feel strongly about.

Parents shouldn't have to go looking for info, it should be in black and white in the information pack.

WasThatACorner · 07/10/2024 07:18

@Namechangetotalkaboutmysleepingpillsproblem I didn't intend to be vegan, I started making little changes that felt right and this is where I ended up.

Don't beat yourself up, do what feels OK to you and be kind to yourself. Nobody is perfect, you care and that is making a difference.

Have you tried oatmilk? I can't stand the other fake milks but the oat one is nice.

SweetGenie · 06/10/2024 23:48

Don't worry, the meat and dairy lobby is far too strong for that to happen.

Oopsadaisy92 · 07/10/2024 07:23

on a separate note, how are the pork sausage not GF! Most sausages these days are gf so I dread to think the quality of food your DC is eating!

But I was talking about kid with SEN and allergies having FSM vouchers for packed lunches.

And agreeing with the poster you quoted that meals should be vegan?

Namechangetotalkaboutmysleepingpillsproblem · 07/10/2024 00:52

Are we ? A Christian country ?

Statistically speaking, I’m pretty sure the last census showed Christianity to still be the predominant religion. It is a self identification though there isn’t a follow up question asking whether you worship regularly etc.

Demonhunter · 07/10/2024 08:04

NeverDropYourMooncup · 07/10/2024 07:41

About the FSM vouchers I was. In fact my comment before then said that it won't ever be a case that everyone is vegan so people are right to at least look at the least cruel ways.

Why still argue when I told you and you can see from the reply that it was the FSM vouchers my comment was about, I didn't mention the rest of the PP. Why do people on here just double down when they've got something wrong instead of just saying they misunderstood and move on 😂
It's getting beyond a joke people doing this. If I misundersrand a comment I always acknowledge I misconstrued.

You saw my comment saying yes I'm a vegan to someone, and you jumped on me because of it. You aren't the first and won't be the last 🤷‍♀️

Auburngal · 07/10/2024 08:05

In Leicester, we have chains such as KFC and Nando’s - some branches are halal. The thing is that independent/small franchises (such as Maryland) are halal. So Muslims should go to these places.

Auburngal · 07/10/2024 08:07

TofuTart · 07/10/2024 00:35

Most apps you can choose non halal

Lovelysummerdays · 07/10/2024 08:12

Felt like I had to look up that census data for 2021 42.6% Christian versus 37% no religion. Christianity dropped 12% since 2011. It’s not really surprising I think a lot of my generation used to think of themselves as loosely Christian due to upbringing but didn’t go to church or really believe. Over the years I’ve definitely become more comfortable with just saying I have no religion.

whatkatydid2014 · 07/10/2024 08:19

I think if the options are bad for her then your best bet is to send a packed lunch really.

I often wonder if it might be better if schools just offered veggie options. It would be much easier to do good quality food for the pricing they have to manage in schools if you don’t include meat and it means most options can be accessible for everyone.

nervouslandlord · 07/10/2024 08:32

@whatkatydid2014 I completely agree. Unfortunately the farming lobby in our county would go nuts at the thought, forgetting the logic that they grow the veg!

It's the method of slaughter. I wouldn't eat it.

it's absolutely vile in tea though.

Op, I'd be in to see the head. In my view, this is absolutely not acceptable.
