Child identifies as a wolf ... WTF?

Portakalkedi · 27/09/2024 12:15

Just on Radio 4 now, discussing a child in secondary school who identifies as a wolf, and the school is going along with this. AIBU to think the world (or at least the UK) has gone mad? If said child is living in the woods, catching its own prey etc etc, howling and running with other wolves, which I doubt, then why the hell is anyone going along with it? They are also saying that some others identify as dogs or cats etc. And here was me thinking men 'identifying' as women was bad.

In primary school, I'd treat this as playful (although not the toileting!)

In secondary school, parents need to nip this shit in the bud. I imagine other school kids are likely ripping the piss out of these kids.

If my secondary school child wanted to self ID as an animal, I'd give them a figurative smack in the head!

This poor transwolf IS a wolf. Bigots.
We need to help this wolf transition asap. We should be spending extra NHS funding on this ASAP!

JustAnotherPoster00 · 27/09/2024 12:43

Happy right wing trope day everybody🎂🎉

VaddaABeetch · 27/09/2024 12:44

Trans wolves are wolves
Just like Zebras are bras

If being right wing (you forgot to prefix right wing with FAR- right wing cannot be referred to without having Far in front of it-it's the law! )@JustAnotherPoster00 means that you have half a brain then bring on the right wing (far right)

Why does a cat need to go to school?

Exactly! When I was 5/6 I wanted to be a cat so badly so I didn’t have to go to school!

Absolute nonsense and it’s got to peak at some point, then go back to normal where human boys are human boys and human girls are human girls.

needsomewarmsunshine · 27/09/2024 12:48

I find it hard to believe some parents let their kids carry on with this shite. Doesn't say much for the parents imo.

Edingril · 27/09/2024 12:48

I presume wolf's don't play Xbox, eat ice cream or pizza, play with human friends etc. Shams really

marmiteisnttheonlyspread · 27/09/2024 12:48

Was it on R4 or R2 and Jeremy Vine?

I've not listened to it yet but wonder if it's like little girls pretending to be horses?

You go along with it and normality soon pops back into view.

Maiyakat · 27/09/2024 12:50

I would very much like to identify as a cat, sleep most of the day with a few trips outside to half heartedly chase a squirrel. Might struggle to stomach the food though....

There are two 'furries' in the specialist provision at DD's school. From what she's said it just marks them out even more as being 'different' and makes them more of a target.

JustAnotherPoster00 · 27/09/2024 12:51

I wouldn't say it was a far right thing but a right wing thing like reform voters and MAGA voters, it's just it's that the commenter has always 'heard' that child identifies as 'insert animal here' and requires all sorts or accommodations, its an anti trams trope unsurprising on here bit often the proponents of this view also support forced birthing, anti immigration and often veiled anti lgbtqia+/racist dog whistles

HoppingPavlova · 27/09/2024 12:51

I fucking despair, honestly, why have adults lost the ability to tell children NO? We already have a generation of spoiled, idle and indulged brats as a result of 'gentle' (ie lazy) parenting

I don’t disagree, in that I believe 99.9% of this is a fad kids jump on these days with an inability of adults to tell them to cut the crap.

However, I remember, over 5 decades ago I was in hospital as a child. Those days anyone who had surgery was in for ages and there was no such thing as parents staying, they came at visiting hours and left. Anyhoo, the kid in the bed opposite was there because she believed she was a dog. Trying to cast my mind back I think she may have been around 10yo. The only things she would say were dog related such as ‘my name is Fluffy’ (or whatever it was), ‘I only eat dog biscuits’ etc. she refused to walk but would walk on all fours and would pant, bark etc. She genuinely refused to eat normal food and wanted dog food so was on a drip, and let’s just say she didn’t use the toilet like we did.

She was there in an effort for the hospital to basically get her to cut the crap out thinking maybe it’s the parents fault, but that didn’t work. I believe she honestly believed she was a dog. I do recall that when I left they were making arrangements for her to go to an institution as that was pretty much the answer to most things ‘out of the ordinary’ back then.

But, in the past, children pretending to be horses, unicorns, monsters, pirates was only ever done at playtime at school. We didn’t insist the teacher call us Star and feed us hay for lunch.

Lollll, exactly.

To anyone here saying "give it time" or "well it probably is happening somewhere" - YOU are the problem.

There are a handful of extremely mentally unwell children unable to get medical care and no longer sectioned/in institutions because of austerity. The rest is just bullshit hype that when proven wrong someone goes "oh well give it time!"

This is the very definition of fake news

Cattery · 27/09/2024 12:54

I might identify as a sloth…

Look up the meaning of the word TROPE please

I’ve heard that their are children at our local secondary identifying as a cat, they wear ears and a tail and go to the loo on the grass.

Kid needs some discipline at home

I saw a group of teenagers recently, one girl was wearing cat ears and a tail and meowing. I thought she was in fancy dress but now I'm wondering if she "identifies as a cat" 🙄

FoxtrotOscarKindaDay · 27/09/2024 12:57

Any child that identifies as an animal shouldn't be at school. Animals don't get an education. Let their parents home school them if they want to.

A wolf in a school would be tranquilised and removed from the premises.

JaneEyreLaughing · 27/09/2024 12:57

@LostittoBostik I know perfectly well what it means, thank you but it isn't the case here.
May I suggest you look up the word 'lunatic' it is still in the OED and see if it applies in any way to this story.

Best comment I've read today! 😂

I’ve heard of an American family who dealt with this with their tween by building an outside enclosure out of scrap wood and chicken wire and chucking some raw meat and telling the tween that if they’re a wolf that is where they will live.

On the other hand, if they want to sleep in the bedroom and have pizza on Saturday night, then they are a child and will dress and behave like one.

Apparently that solved the problem.

I've heard a lot of American right-wingers spreading this kind of entirely baseless rumour around because they want to believe it's true more than want to find out if it's actually true. Which it isn't.

Good parenting 👏🏻👏🏻 well done them.

What a lot of self indulgent nonsense this is. I wanted to be a mermaid when I was young. If I’d insisted I was and they threw me in a pool I’d have probably drowned because I’d be the world’s only mermaid who couldn’t swim!

ntmdino · 27/09/2024 13:00

Meh. Our daughter spent the majority of a year as a dog (she tried cat first, didn't like it much) when she was 7. Turned out absolutely fine.

Honestly, there's a bit of me that thinks it would've been cooler if she'd been a wolf instead.

ChungKing · 27/09/2024 13:01

Look, the stuff about litter trays being available in schools is clearly bullshit, but there are "furry" kids who identify as animals, and worryingly, there are some teachers who take it a bit more seriously than they should. The mind boggles.
