To ask if you put your phone on Do Not Disturb?

I’ve been wondering about this recently. Do you put your phone on DND during certain times of the day, like when you’re working, sleeping, or just need a break from notifications? How do you decide when to use it, and do you have any tips for managing notifications effectively?

It goes on as standard every night from bedtime to wake time. That is it really.

MavisPennies · 08/09/2024 22:59

Mine is nearly always on silent or if I really don't want to be disturbed I put it on 'focus' mode which blocks notifications and apps that I choose.
Then just turn off focus mode when you're having a break and want distraction.
Phonecalls can still get through.

belindaah · 08/09/2024 22:59

I do. It just means I check my phone when it suits me and it doesn't interrupt what I'm doing. I still check it sporadically for important stuff.

Cookerhood · 08/09/2024 22:59

Mine is set to be in DND from 11pm to 8am. If I go to bed earlier I switch it on then, likewise if I'm in a meeting etc.
I should have said, it's almost always on silent anyway.

Whereisthesun99 · 08/09/2024 22:59

Yes my phone goes into do not disturb between 10 pm and 8am, but I have it set so my mum parents, in laws and gets can still get through if they need me .

Mumof2namechange · 08/09/2024 22:59

Mine's on silent (no vibration) 24-7 unless I'm expecting a call. I check it often and call back if I miss something important

RedBulb · 08/09/2024 22:59

From 9pm every night.

i highly recommend

Angeldelight50 · 08/09/2024 22:59

I turned off notifications for all apps bar messaging a few years back.. have never missed out of anything and dramatically reduced how often I pick up my phone!

NothingAGoodCuppaDoesntFix · 08/09/2024 23:00

Always on silent unless waiting for a call.

SquatWeightaMinute · 08/09/2024 23:01

Mine is on silent all of the time and goes into sleep mode at 9pm until my alarm. My kids can get through but that’s it.

BiscuitlyBoyle · 08/09/2024 23:01

I have a work focus. It lets through certain numbers that are important, DH and elderly parents, but nothing else. I set the time and days.

ReadingInTheRain583 · 08/09/2024 23:01

Mine is set...

Weekdays 7am-6pm full notifications, 6pm-9pm silent, 9pm-7am do not disturb but allow calls (if someone calls me, likely work, its a life/death emergency)

Weekends 9am-9pm silent, 9pm-9am do not disturb but allow calls.

belindaah · 08/09/2024 23:02

@Whereisthesun99 how do you set it to allow certain calls through?

FuzzyDiva · 08/09/2024 23:02

It’s on all the time.

Same (except for timings)

CheeseWisely · 08/09/2024 23:07

Mine is on silent all the time unless I'm expecting a call, or if for example I've gone out and left our baby with my Husband, in case there's an emergency and he needs to contact me.

For social media I have all notifications turned off for everything except WhatsApp. I decide when to engage with Facebook and Instagram etc, they don't summon me. For email I have badge notifications but not push or banner or sounds.

My Husband is the absolute opposite and has notifications pinging on his phone and his watch all day long (although he uses DND overnight). Drives me to the brink!!

shellyleppard · 08/09/2024 23:09

Mine goes on do not disturb from 9pm until the next morning. Unless I know someone is ill x

Barrenfieldoffucks · 08/09/2024 23:09

Mine is always on DND unless during working hours as I use it for work.

I will see messages etc, but I hate the noise of a phone going off so it lives on silent.

Hoolihan · 08/09/2024 23:09

Mine is always on silent and all notifications blocked except for some Whatsapp contacts/groups. I uninstall Instagram on Sunday nights until the following Saturday morning. I use focus mode every week day 10am-4pm which blocks everything except calls and Spotify.

Despite all of this I STILL waste so many hours on mindless scrolling.

FionaJT · 08/09/2024 23:10

belindaah · 08/09/2024 23:02

@Whereisthesun99 how do you set it to allow certain calls through?

My phone has a DND option to allow favourites, so you use that and tag as a favourite contact the numbers you want to be able to get through.

babbi · 08/09/2024 23:11

Place marking to learn how to manage this

FussyPud · 08/09/2024 23:11

My phone is always in DND mode. My children, their schools/colleges, and my parent are on the allow list, everything else takes its chances.

DappledThings · 08/09/2024 23:11

My phone is on silent 24 hours a day.

Imperfectionist · 08/09/2024 23:14

No notifications switched on for anything, ever.

Notifications give you brain rot and rapidly erode concentration spans. I wouldn’t be surprised if scientists find a correlation between notifications - pings, beeps, flashes, and long term brain function. People are becoming trained to respond to them like Pavlovian dogs!

So yeah. Usually on silent. Do not disturb in evenings.

I have a landline if anyone really wants to speak to me and I always answer it!

FastFood · 08/09/2024 23:14

Mine is on DND all the time, I never have any notification, except for calls. It's been like that for years.
I just check my messages often and that's fine. Absolutely no need for notifications whatsoever.
