To ask if you put your phone on Do Not Disturb?

I’ve been wondering about this recently. Do you put your phone on DND during certain times of the day, like when you’re working, sleeping, or just need a break from notifications? How do you decide when to use it, and do you have any tips for managing notifications effectively?

My DND automatically goes on from 7pm, I sleep 8pm-4am due to my shifts, so I end up with a bunch of messages from the late shift team.

Certain numbers can still call (parents, husband, siblings) but everything else is muted. I need my phone during the day but it spends most of the day on a shelf and important notifications go to my watch.

Nope. Never.
I am more than happy to leave it in a different room tho. So it sits on my desk at work - never comes to meetings or if I'm elsewhere in the building.
Sits - along with every other electronic device in the house - downstairs overnight.

What's the difference between DND and putting on silent? Or just the programmable side of it?

Mines on silent unless I'm expecting a call. I can read messages in my own time

aramox1 · 09/09/2024 06:41

No bc I have no notifications except texts.

I turned off notifications for all apps bar messaging a few years back.. have never missed out of anything and dramatically reduced how often I pick up my phone!

DND means it won’t light up or vibrate as well as not make a sound so I use it at night - too many times I would just be getting off to sleep then my phone lighting up would wake me up

I realised a while back how intrusive tech is these days. Uninstalled lots of apps, I limit my time on the phone and told friends to call me rather than texting.
DND used often, overnight and when I'm in meetings or need to concentrate.
I control the tech' now and, although some folk don't get it, I feel better for it.

DND from 9pm to 8am (automatically set up) but set that calls or messages from DH or DS still come through same as if someone tries to call twice within so many minutes

FrangipaniBlue · 09/09/2024 08:32

it's also on silent permanently as notifications come through on my watch to alert me

SerendipityJane · 09/09/2024 08:36

(On Android, and probably on iOS) You can tweak DND to allow a caller through if they have tried x times in 5 minutes. Personally I don't because I suspect the scammy spammy industry knows this.

Otherwise I tend to have DND set out of work hours, with starred contacts allowed through.

For now, callers are free to leave a voicemail (as the instructions I have set up inform them).

Mine is on dnd all the time. If my children need to get hold of me they call twice to bypass it. I’m not antisocial person but I don’t want it to interrupt work and general life.

RaininSummer · 09/09/2024 08:43

Mine is always on apart from an emergency whitelist for family.

I suspect I am an antisocial person 😀

I dislike 90% of phone calls as they are useless compared to a single line email.

Even if you want to do the executive shuffle and try and make notes on your phone while someone is speaking, why should you ? Quite aside from the YOU MUST DO IT NOW implied interrupting nature of phone calls.

I realise this is just the old, grumpy whine of someone who's used email since the early 80s and found it pitch perfect for almost all non-operational communications.

I have DND on from 11pm to 9am, with exceptions for my sons. However, it can be overridden for emergencies.

Or, as I found out this morning, partners who 'just want a quick chat' 😤He has a phone and a watch that beep and make alert noises constantly and he can't understand why I don't want the same.
