I’ve been wondering about this recently. Do you put your phone on DND during certain times of the day, like when you’re working, sleeping, or just need a break from notifications? How do you decide when to use it, and do you have any tips for managing notifications effectively?

10pm until 8am. Have family in favourites. So nothing to worry about

Begsthequestion · 08/09/2024 23:15

Yes, every night, but with a few numbers unblocked and still able to call/text me.

Elipl · 08/09/2024 23:16

I'm on dnd pretty much 24/7

Moonshine5 · 08/09/2024 23:19

Yes
10pm-6am

fizzymizzy · 08/09/2024 23:20

No but I have no reason to as the only people who would be contact me are the immediate family who I wouldn't want to block notification from

mycatsanutter · 08/09/2024 23:24

Mine used to be on from 11-7 but not anymore . One night I woke up and looked at my phone to see the time and I had dozens of missed calls - my son had been attacked and was in hospital, I felt awful that I had missed his calls ( and my other sons and daughter in law 😩)

Mine is set to be in DND from 11pm to 8am. If I go to bed earlier I switch it on then, likewise if I'm in a meeting etc.
I should have said, it's almost always on silent anyway.

Edited

Same although mine is set 9pm until 7am. Will put it on ad hoc for any important appointments or important things at work, or if I have a nap, or whatever. My phone is otherwise almost permanently on vibrate. I do have an exceptions list though - so there are a bunch of phone numbers that will ring through even when my phone is on DND. This is all close family members basically as well as the nursery and my children's school. So people who may want to contact me in an emergency situation and I know wouldn't ring me at night time or during working hours unless it was very important.

paristotokyo · 08/09/2024 23:29

Mine goes on airplane mode when I'm sleeping. I probably should use dnd during the day so I can be more productive though..

CharlotteBog · 08/09/2024 23:32

Mine is on silent/vibrate most of the time and I have set most apps not to send notifications. I choose when I want to catch up.

I can see if someone is phoning me and I do see all communication from my teenage son.

If DS (15) is home alone for a period of time or out and about I will turn it off silent unless I am somewhere that would be annoying/intrusive. Everyone else can wait!

ThatWhiteElephant · 08/09/2024 23:33

Mine is on DND from 10pm - 8am every night , except for dh and both ds whose calls, texts etc will come through.

JC03745 · 08/09/2024 23:39

Mine goes on silent about 11pm till 8am.
I was sick of being woken up! The main reason was that a colleague was sending messages to the work group chat at all hours. It was meant to notify of urgent rota changes a day or so before a shift. She started using it to send pics of randoms on her holidays, tell us at 6am that a friends flight was delayed, send post op wound pics and all manner of things none of us wanted to see, nor be woken by at all hours!

reallifeboogie · 08/09/2024 23:41

I set my to DND when I get into bed. I also turn my wifi/data off.
I have it set so my brother and my mum can ring me. I also have it so if the same number rings twice within 15 minutes it'll ring the second time. This was useful when my friend went into pre-term labour when her husband was away and she phoned me at 2am to be with her kids whilst her mum went with her to hospital.

KreedKafer · 08/09/2024 23:43

I have mine on silent 24/7 anyway and the vibrate alone wouldn't be enough to wake me up at night, so I don't bother to put it on DND when I go to bed or anything. When I'm at work I just have it face down on my desk and pay no attention to it until I take a break.

The only time I would typically put it on DND would in a situation where I wouldn't want it to light up or vibrate and accidentally disturb anyone else, like if I was at the cinema or something.

For added context - I enable very few notifications on my phone. Basically the only notifications I've enabled are texts, WhatsApp, BBC News alerts and my team's football scores. I don't have notifications set up for email, social media or apps in general. That would drive me absolutely insane.

ArabellaFishwife · 08/09/2024 23:43

Mine goes on DND at night. Phone will let through calls from certain people. I didn't set this; it was my phone, and I'm buggered if I know how to change it.

suki1964 · 08/09/2024 23:45

Mines DND from 9pm till 8am

I dont have push notifications or any type of beeping buzzing or vibrating "alerting" me to anything at anytime . My phone is MY SLAVE, Im not its

honeyfox · 08/09/2024 23:47

I have it on DND at night (bar certain starred contacts) and on silent all day. Most groups are muted until I check them and most notifications turned off. Would highly recommend this.

Summertimer · 08/09/2024 23:50

I turn the volume down if I am in the office. I usually only have teams turned on on my phone. At night phones go on charge downstairs. At other times, if phone is in another room or in my bag it’s on loud enough to hear unless I’m in a church, cinema, theatre etc.

LoopyLou67 · 08/09/2024 23:50

Yes it’s set for whenever my location is work, so I don’t need to activate

qotsa · 08/09/2024 23:52

I have it scheduled every evening, 10 weekdays. 11 weekends... until morning. What I also do though is have certain people... DS's, DH, parents ... that it excludes from this at all times. They always get through. So I might put it on during the day whilst working but I know in case of emergency the people I have listed can still get through. So many people I speak to don't know you can do this.

Synchronisedwitches · 08/09/2024 23:52

I turn mine off unless I've reason to have it on
I check all messages at lunch and in the evening.

NewName24 · 08/09/2024 23:53

I turn the wi-fi / data off when I go to bed, and all my (adult) dc know if I were ever needed in the middle of the night, to ring me.

I turn sound / notifications off if I am in a meeting / Church / Theatre / etc.

LongTimeReading · 08/09/2024 23:56

Mine is set 12am to 8am DND, however, phone calls of all kinds can still get through.

Not certain calls, and not calls where someone has tried twice in 15 minutes or whatever it is - all calls. No one is going to call me after 10pm unless it's an emergency, so I am more than happy to take a call in the middle of the night as it's going to be practically life or death.

I had a situation once when my husband was ill and collapsed at about four in the morning. My friend and her husband live nextdoor and I needed him to help me, but neither of them allowed phone calls when their phones were on DND, so I ended up having to go round and bang on their windows, which of course frightened the pair of them to death.

Aside from this, I frequently set my phone to silent-with-vibrate during the day, as it's not always appropriate for it to be pinging or ringing.

TheSmallAssassin · 08/09/2024 23:57

Move is on DND from 22:30 til 08:00, except for certain numbers or repeat calls. I've also got it set to go into DND when I put it face down, which is what I usually do when I need to focus at work, though I've only recently remembered that I'd done that!

Edingril · 08/09/2024 23:57

Mine is always on silent unless I am waiting on an important call or text

You'd recommend it sure, because it works for you. I see that. It wouldn't work for me at all. We're all different.
