To think that a holiday home is not a 'home'?

Colleague of mine constantly mentions her partner's 'home' in Spain. I thought the partner might be Spanish or grew up there, but turns out it's just a holiday villa. They've had it since around the financial crisis.

It's always "Freddie's family home in Spain"... or "At Freddie's Spanish home"... but it's not a 'home' it's a house. They've got no connection to the place other than going out there to sit in the sun and drink. They spend a couple of weeks a year there.

Of course it’s a home.

WelshSmog · 17/08/2024 18:58

I don't see the problem in what she's saying :/

Littletreefrog · 17/08/2024 18:58

You sound like hard work. If they own it and stay in it it is their home. The clue is in the title "2nd home"

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 17/08/2024 19:00

Holidaying somewhere every year certainly does give you an emotional connection...

WickieRoy · 17/08/2024 19:00

Some people see it as another home, others not so much.

The language in your post is really judgemental.

Shibr · 17/08/2024 19:00

If they think it’s their home, it’s their home. Who are you to say what people call their home?

PinkCast · 17/08/2024 19:00

If he wants to call it his Spanish home, second home etc... then that is what it is.
Are you jealous?

MabelMd · 17/08/2024 19:00

This.

Toothlessdragon4 · 17/08/2024 19:01

We have a holiday home abroad and it is very much our home. It feels like our home and it is full of our stuff. Not sure why you would need to question this?

OtterOnAPlane · 17/08/2024 19:01

Why does it irk you so much?

KreedKafer · 17/08/2024 19:03

How is this affecting you? Why so bitter?

olympicsrock · 17/08/2024 19:03

We have a Spanish home. It’s the place where we switch off from work 6 times a year and have really special quality time there.
no x box or work just family fun.
We spend 8/ 52 weeks there and have lots of personal possessions, our own bedrooms etc.

It’s our home. YABU ! ( and probably are jealous)

Viviennemary · 17/08/2024 19:04

You sound a bit jealous, Its their home when they are in Spain.

MrsSucculent · 17/08/2024 19:05

You just sound jealous I’m afraid. We have a family home in Spain and it absolutely is a home for all of us. Full of our stuff and photos and clothes etc. it’s a home. Not our permanent home but still our home.

eetic · 17/08/2024 19:05

I'm not bitter, I just find it irksome.

We have a house in Antigua - we call it our 'house in the caribbean' or 'holiday home' but never would call it our 'home'. We have no connection to Antigua other than thinking it's a nice place to holiday. I think locals would be offended if we claimed it as our home.

So this was just an outlet for you to tell us you have a "home" in Antigua?

Yeah I’m sure all those Spanish locals who run business’s are massively offended at all the Brit’s with Spanish homes spending money in their bars, restaurants and shops.

KerryBlues · 17/08/2024 19:08

No connection to the place?! Not everyone lives in the tiny village they were born in, op.
Lots of us live in places we've no family connection to!

Has he got a hat?

I believe that the legal definition of 'a home' is wherever 'the hat' lays.

So sometimes a home can be a coat peg in a pub.

longdistanceclaraclara · 17/08/2024 19:09

I think you're jealous, and I don't think you have a house in Antigua.
