To think that a holiday home is not a 'home'?

Colleague of mine constantly mentions her partner's 'home' in Spain. I thought the partner might be Spanish or grew up there, but turns out it's just a holiday villa. They've had it since around the financial crisis.

It's always "Freddie's family home in Spain"... or "At Freddie's Spanish home"... but it's not a 'home' it's a house. They've got no connection to the place other than going out there to sit in the sun and drink. They spend a couple of weeks a year there.

If it contains some of his personal belongings, he's paying for the place and they have happy times there it sounds like a home to me.

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 17/08/2024 21:47

Holiday HOME you say???

OpizpuHeuvHiyo · 17/08/2024 21:53

Why does it affect you so much?
If you've spent more than a couple of hours on an unfiltered Internet feed you must know that the world contains many millions if not billions of people who are deeply and tragically either misinformed or willfully ignorant about so many things. It's not possible to stop people from being wrong. Put your energy into minimising the impact these issues have on you, and do the best you can. This woman's choices on this matter have zero impact on you.

Of course you have a holiday home in Antigua 😂

Geordie01 · 17/08/2024 21:58

Half Spanish here. Have a house here in the uk and a house in Spain in the place I spent a lot of time growing up. I consider both of them ‘home’. The people who live in next door to us in Spain are as English as fish and chips 🤣. It’s also their home and I and other locals don’t take any offence or find it odd they refer to it as home

I'm not bitter, I just find it irksome.

We have a house in Antigua - we call it our 'house in the caribbean' or 'holiday home' but never would call it our 'home'. We have no connection to Antigua other than thinking it's a nice place to holiday. I think locals would be offended if we claimed it as our home.

So you're calling the place on Antigua your 'home', modified with an adjective 'holiday', it's hard to see any difference.

I've got a holiday home. It is my home. I've chosen the decor and bought the furniture and like to keep it looking nice. DH has put a membrane over the back garden area with the large pebbles and a bit of decking and BBQ area because we're not there all the time it has to be low maintenance. We still put an effort into it. It's not like staying in a holiday villa. We leave clothes and personal things there ready for when we return.

ThePoshUns · 17/08/2024 22:12

What difference does it make to you?

ThePoshUns · 17/08/2024 22:13

Oh is see. She has a giraffe, you have a box to put it in. Bravo you

LynetteScavo · 18/08/2024 07:20

Technically I think the house in Spain should be referred to as a villa, rather than a home. Which sounds posher to me. A home could be a studio apartment.

When I buy a second house in Europe I'm going to refer to it as my villa to annoy my colleagues.

Yet they aren't offended you've bought property and are pricing out the locals?
Talk about a stealth boast on a thread
Next post, you'll say that you can't call one's staff 'family' even if they are with you 24 hours a day

OP go and have a shag or eat some cake or something, this is a ridiculous thing to give headspace to.

Can we do both?!

FinalInstructionstotheAudience · 18/08/2024 07:36

I have a garden which my DH calls my 2nd home...

Tell you what, why not talk about it all the time at work as a corrective, being careful to refer to it as ‘our HOUSE in Antigua’ or ‘our Caribbean pied-à-terre’ every time Freddie’s hapless wife refers to Freddie’s plainly inferior ‘home’ in Spain? That’ll teach them.

JMSA · 18/08/2024 07:45

Be very honest with yourself, OP. Are you jealous?
I see no other reason for looking down on them like this.
