To think that a holiday home is not a 'home'?

Colleague of mine constantly mentions her partner's 'home' in Spain. I thought the partner might be Spanish or grew up there, but turns out it's just a holiday villa. They've had it since around the financial crisis.

It's always "Freddie's family home in Spain"... or "At Freddie's Spanish home"... but it's not a 'home' it's a house. They've got no connection to the place other than going out there to sit in the sun and drink. They spend a couple of weeks a year there.

I actually agree with you, OP. I wouldn’t consider somewhere I holiday for two weeks a year a home. However it seems from this thread that lots of people feel differently and that’s fine. Not something I could get worked up about.

DinnaeFashYersel · 17/08/2024 19:23

I'm hoping to have a home just like that in about 5 years

Yeah I’m sure all those Spanish locals who run business’s are massively offended at all the Brit’s with Spanish homes spending money in their bars, restaurants and shops.

Depends if they have a local housing crisis i guess.

ItsAlrightDarling · 17/08/2024 19:24

Why does this take up any of your thoughts?

DinnaeFashYersel · 17/08/2024 19:24

We have a house in Antigua - we call it our 'house in the caribbean

Get you 👌

KnottyKnitting · 17/08/2024 19:28

Our place in Portugal is a home from home. We do not rent it out any more than we would rent out our home in the UK because it's our home. It has all our stuff there.
It's our other home.
What a ridiculous petty subject to start a thread on!

ItsAlrightDarling · 17/08/2024 19:28

My in laws lived in the U.K. but owned a house in Spain. They didn’t actually own a house in the U.K. as they got accommodation with their job. So their Spanish house, where they spent about 12 weeks of the year and where they had chosen the decor, the furniture etc was far more of a home to them than the impersonal accommodation they had in the U.K.
Anyway they live there full time now they’ve retired, so can call it their home without randoms whinging about them on the internet 👍

yeesh · 17/08/2024 19:30

Lol

RaininSummer · 17/08/2024 19:32

Seems a strange thing to get bent out of shape about and it does make you sound kind of jealous OP.

taxguru · 17/08/2024 19:36

I'd say it depends on whether it's let out when family aren't using it. If so, it's certainly not a "home" - it is indeed just a house. However, if it's only ever used by the owner with maybe occasional family/friends, then I'd say it's a "home".

BiggerBoat1 · 17/08/2024 19:36

Your friend can call her home whatever she wants. Why are you bothered? Do you think you need to get a hobby? Maybe join a book group?

Skybluepinky · 17/08/2024 19:37

Sounds like u r jealous.

Eminybob · 17/08/2024 19:39

When I go on holiday we call our hotel room our "home" for the week. Despite never having been there before.
What do you think about that then?

Deliaskis · 17/08/2024 19:43

I don't get why this would bother you at all.

However, for what it's worth, I think it depends on what you do there and how long you stay there for. We have a flat in Austria and have been going there several times a year for decades, on season, off season etc. We have a lot of memories here and many of our friends and family members have spent time here with us. We keep possessions here. We've renovated it. I remember building flat pack furniture here when I was six months pregnant. I remember DD taking her first steps here, she is now a teenager and has spent time here during every season of the year. We have local friends here and are recognised and greeted when out and about. We feel 'at home' here. And for us, that's what matters. Others may feel differently and that's fine, but it doesn't make it any less of a home for us.

I guess it's a 'you do you' kind of question really.

Nourishinghandcream · 17/08/2024 19:46

So what should we call our motorhome from now on, motorplacewetravelinandlayourheadsfromtimetotime?
Don't think moho works with that.☹️

kitsuneghost · 17/08/2024 19:48

eetic · 17/08/2024 19:05

I'm not bitter, I just find it irksome.

We have a house in Antigua - we call it our 'house in the caribbean' or 'holiday home' but never would call it our 'home'. We have no connection to Antigua other than thinking it's a nice place to holiday. I think locals would be offended if we claimed it as our home.

They are already offended that rich foreigners are floating in and buying their property up so I wouldn't worry about what you call it.

XStratagy · 17/08/2024 19:48

I did start a battle with a tv architect who's team used to write smaltzy 'home' posts about his Cornish holiday let.
It was available to let for the majority of the year. Completely unsuitable as a full-time home for a family, a retired couple or anyone else. It is a holiday let.
Name it for what it is.

itsgettingweird · 17/08/2024 19:49

It's no different or people calling their air b and Bs second homes.

It's their home. They own it.

Why do you care?!

itsgettingweird · 17/08/2024 19:50

olympicsrock · 17/08/2024 19:03

We have a Spanish home. It’s the place where we switch off from work 6 times a year and have really special quality time there.
no x box or work just family fun.
We spend 8/ 52 weeks there and have lots of personal possessions, our own bedrooms etc.

It’s our home. YABU ! ( and probably are jealous)

I'm jealous of you - that sounds bliss Grin

Margaux1 · 17/08/2024 19:51

Holiday...home!

itsgettingweird · 17/08/2024 19:52

I'd rather have a home in Spain than a fictional one in Antigua

HTH

Moier · 17/08/2024 19:53

Well l have a Villa in the Canaries.
It's my other " HOME".
I have clothes there.. all furniture and ornaments were bought and chosen by me.
I don't see your point at all.

Blogswife · 17/08/2024 19:54

What a load of rubbish . We have a holiday home. It’s our home because we have our furniture in it, our clothes in the wardrobes, our stuff in the cupboards. We belong to the community , know our neighbours and pay all the bills
Why are you so upset that someone has more than one place that they call home ?

godmum56 · 17/08/2024 19:58

why on earth does it bother you?
