What’s pretty these days

Starsineyes91 · 09/08/2024 22:23

Anybody else confused what counts as pretty/attractive these days.

It’s like you’re only allowed to look natural if you’re very young and naturally pretty.

Its so confusing every woman and her dog is expected to have a face full of filler and be deep orange at all times with obligatory fake black eyelashes.

I think society has forgotten what a natural pleasant face looks like, I see women with barefaced or light make-up being called drug addicts or other nasty slurs, because they have some natural texture and shadows.

Might get me flamed but some of the women doing the shaming of more natural women are plain Jane’s who have paid a lot to look like unattractive transvestites. But so many men will choose them over an attractive natural girl.

Don’t get me started on the obsession with filtered photos. Society has become so toxic for girls and women.

Who bloody cares?

Why the focus on prettiness? Are we not more than things to be stared at?

HansHolbein · 09/08/2024 22:25

Do men have these conversations about other men? Or is it just women that like policing what other women do?

Enchantedlilypad · 09/08/2024 22:27

I am 31 so still young but definitely some signs of getting older and I go out all the time without makeup, I really don't care what people think of me. I wear nice clothes that I feel comfortable in and some jewellery but I am not interested in makeup/fake tan/lip filler/botox etc. We all get older, it's natural and I like seeing a natural face, I also don't mind someone wearing loads of makeup, each to their own.

Lyricallie · 09/08/2024 22:28

Literally don’t hang out with anyone who thinks that. Maybe you need to speak to nicer people.

ghostyslovesheets · 09/08/2024 22:28

I bet this will go poof like the last one

but OP it's YOU that's judging other women - and in real life I know no one like you describe

I never wear make up and have never been called a drug addict - not sure where you are finding all this toxic stuff but maybe step away from SM

SallyWD · 09/08/2024 22:29

What are you talking about? No woman is expected to have filler, be deep orange or have fake eyelashes. It's a look some women go for but in my opinion most people think it looks awful!
And no natural looking woman is called a drug addict! I know plenty of naturally pretty looking women.

I'm 54 - still don't wear it - like you I give not one fig what people think

countdowntonap · 09/08/2024 22:32

The look you’re describing is very working class British. I’m not sure when you last went abroad, but other foreign women just don’t have this look. Have been to 5 foreign destinations so far this year, including party islands like Mykonos, and the filler looks (on the whole) ends at the departure lounge.

Qwertys · 09/08/2024 22:32

The things you describe are associated with only some social groups aren’t they. It’s not all women at all. Different groups have different styles

WingSluts · 09/08/2024 22:32

I’ve never hear anyone described as looking like a drug addict for not wearing make up. I also don’t know have anyone in my circle with a face full of fillers. But if they did I wouldn’t dream of judging or commenting.

RaininSummer · 09/08/2024 22:33

Who are these people expecting women to be orange and full of fillers? I don't know anybody like that. My daughters aren't like that and I don't think their friends are. People who live on a diet of reality TV maybe think the world is like that. Maybe they need to get out more and ignore social media, reality show wannabes and influencers.

Autel · 09/08/2024 22:38

You’re describing one small subset of working class British women, though, not women at large.

I judge them back maybe, yes but I don’t go out of my way to judge people on their looks (although I see it on here all the time, people look like loser/chavs etc) Judging women’s appearances is everywhere, look how many tabloids and online forums shame celebrities without make-up or for daring to age or putting on weight. These are the messages being drummed into our girls all the time not to mention young men and not so young men being obsessed and expecting the porn look. You would have to live in a bubble not to absorb any of it.

It’s a certain look. The lips, the eyelashes, the brows. And often more. The pointy chin. Hair extensions. Fake nails.

There are plenty of normal looking pretty girls around, with lovely fresh faces. They’re just not in the media or Instagram.

But, I know what you’re saying. I was lovely looking back then, and never anted to alter my face. It just wasn’t a thing.

Nowadays though, it’s not just young women, but all women getting stuff done. It looks terrible. Look at Jennifer Aniston...

Thepossibility · 09/08/2024 23:00

The look you describe is a British thing that has always confused me.
I see it parodied on SM sometimes and always wonder if they are doing it for a laugh? (I'm not there.)

I agree. I don't live in the UK and while there are no doubt a few women with the look described by OP the majority of women don't look like that at all.

farfromideal · 09/08/2024 23:12

Where do you live? Where I live the orange look has not been "pretty" for many years

North west the fake look never went out of fashion.

I am currently abroad. Fake tan is deemed tacky here and most people don’t wear patterns!

I stand out a Brit with my floral dresses and my fake tan 😭

farfromideal · 09/08/2024 23:15

OK that must be very specific to your area. It's definitely not like that in London

mondaytosunday · 09/08/2024 23:28

I don't know anyone who has the work done you speak of. Not one.
I think your average person can recognise what's naturally pretty and what's fake.

Really ? It’s rife where I am from single mums to shop/factory girls it’s become almost like a uniform.

What it has always been - big eyes, symmetrical face, oval or heart face shape, thick hair! However, to some extent completely subjective. Someone can be pretty but wear striking make up occasionally the difference is it makes no difference to their prettiness when they aren’t wearing it!

Thetigerdrankmywine · 09/08/2024 23:52

I've just been to a big Greek island, to a not very British resort and I was fascinated by the number of young women with very obvious fillers/lips. Fake tan and eyelashes not so much, but very obvious face enhancements on really quite young girls. It was interesting, because I thought it was a very British thing. So boring seeing the same lips on everyone, accompanied by very straight blonde or black hair.

Edingril · 09/08/2024 23:53

I would say you need to get out more
