What’s pretty these days

Anybody else confused what counts as pretty/attractive these days.

It’s like you’re only allowed to look natural if you’re very young and naturally pretty.

Its so confusing every woman and her dog is expected to have a face full of filler and be deep orange at all times with obligatory fake black eyelashes.

I think society has forgotten what a natural pleasant face looks like, I see women with barefaced or light make-up being called drug addicts or other nasty slurs, because they have some natural texture and shadows.

Might get me flamed but some of the women doing the shaming of more natural women are plain Jane’s who have paid a lot to look like unattractive transvestites. But so many men will choose them over an attractive natural girl.

Don’t get me started on the obsession with filtered photos. Society has become so toxic for girls and women.

I'm not being spiteful to you. You decided to post unpleasant mysogynistic comments on a public forum. I'm commenting on what you have chosen to reveal of your personality by doing so, not what you look like, which is the least important thing about any of us imo. Do you see the difference?

You are being unpleasant, simply because I had an opinion on the type of women who have bullied me or others.

would it have been a bit more acceptable to you if I said ‘the type of plain Jane who pays a fortune to look as unpleasant as her nasty personality” it’s just wording on a screen it doesn’t reveal the true essence of my character, but if it makes you feel better being sanctimonious whilst victim blaming then so be it.

If I went around bullying innocent people in public I would expect to be judged in return or worse punched in the face.

Im not the type to tell my child to turn the other cheek for the bully to get another punch in either, I was that child and learned it does nothing for your self esteem and the bullies don’t learn a humbling lesson.

Who knows maybe they’re are just projecting because they’re jealous some people are comfortable in their own skin.

You might be right. I remember, as an anorexic sixth-former, feeling almost frightened to be seen without makeup. I used to spend ages making myself look something like this - no false eyelashes or filler, but not exactly natural!

Adults used to say things like "It's a shame you feel you need to cover your pretty face with that stuff" .., sound familiar? 😏

@Garlicfest do you know that photo is of Twiggy? That's a name designed around how a woman looks, although not in that photo. It's a bit more Flake advert 1974

Bideshi · 10/08/2024 19:00

The Friday night train from Manchester to Edinburgh is usually full of hen parties and at least half of them have the full works. They look very artificial and cloned as if they've been generated byAI. Makes me sad to be honest. For all sorts of reasons.

I can understand where you are coming from OP the women saying they don’t feel the societal pressure maybe put their energy in other areas like education, career, marriage and motherhood and getting on the mortgage ladder. I’ve also witnessed high maintenance women who act like gatekeepers to female beauty - even if they don’t meet the current standards themselves, they are misogynistic in their behaviour it’s exhausting to be around.

lemarr · 10/08/2024 21:46

In my circles, natural is considered the standard. Nobody has work done, seldom wear makeup but dresses really lovely. It objectively, in my opinion, looks nicer. You rarely see that filler look around my neck of the woods, so maybe it’s locational?

Garlicfest · 10/08/2024 22:09

@Davros, I do know it's Twiggy (Lesley Hornby)! That was a Vogue cover, 1974. Here's a Biba makeup shot (model: Ingrid Boulting). I loved this pale blue shimmery highlighter, which I wore with a deep plum blusher 😆

@Garlicfest I'm going to a Biba exhibition next Wednesday. Can't wait!

Oh, I'm envious @Davros! Have a great time.

tuttuttutt · 10/08/2024 22:31

I'm nearly 40 and don't wear make up like that. I get told I'm attractive and I'm pretty natural looking apart from dying my hair.

Garlicfest · 10/08/2024 23:01

Me, 1970 - 1990:
Biba face - blue, purple, glossy
Flower child face - gold, rust, appliqués
Punk face - grey, white, black
New Romantic face - black, blue, pink, yellow, shiny
Power Dressing face - suntan, dark eyes, red lips, glitter.

People who would've been Mumsnetters if the internet existed:
"You'd look so much nicer without all that stuff on your face!"
😂

Why not let women have their fun? Your Tret subscription and tinted moisturiser aren't a moral position, just a less adventurous aesthetic.
