Anyone else feeling nervous about tonight?

The Town I live is on the 'list' of planned protests for this Evening. My Work sent all Staff Home before usual closing time.
Town centre is so quiet and Eerie, majority of shops closed and boarded up and even Tesco / Petrol stations plan to close.. we were called to get our click and collect earlier due to the unplanned closure!

I am! We live quite close to one scheduled and have watched loads of the anti-protest people walking past over the last hour or so, but so far no violence

Timeisnevertimeatall · 07/08/2024 19:54

Yes, I feel sick. I'm away and my (young adult) DD is at home in one of the locations, I insisted she got back asap which she did. However, a bit of me wishes I could join the counter protest, I feel redundant in my silence and absence.

Waitingforsummer75 · 07/08/2024 19:55

My parents live in a town that is supposedly on the list. Lots of police updates saying it won't happen but nobody really knows. My office, in the same town, closed early. I'm hoping there's been enough advance notice for it to either not happen or be controlled properly.

Ratfinkstinkypink · 07/08/2024 19:55

I had no idea about all this (I have been in hospital with a very poorly little one and the world has passed me by while we've been on the ward). What the fuck is happening.

ItsMintUpNorth · 07/08/2024 19:56

I luckily don't live in a town affected but I work in one and like you we were sent home early...even though I won't be directly affected tonight I still have that nervous feeling.

Doggymummar · 07/08/2024 19:57

Brighton is on the list tonight, I can't believe it will be locals, they have to be bussed in from London or the environs

Ahreepdeepdeepdeep · 07/08/2024 19:57

Thinking of you all Flowers Isn't it awful to think how many of us are at home feeling nervous for the night ahead?
@Ratfinkstinkypink Hope your little one gets better soon, it's just insane isn't it!

Yeah a bit.

I'm worried about the local people and businesses.

My work is very close to a meeting point and has been targeted with antisocial behaviour before so I'm really worried that they'll cause damage which could very easily result in me losing my job.

We've booked and paid for a really special treat for our son on Saturday when more riots are apparently planned and really torn about trying to do it or not. I don't want to over or under react

Takeyourshoesoff · 07/08/2024 20:00

Yes, my town isn't on the list but I am worried that the current situation is creating a culture in which people think it's ok to be racist, violent thugs (seems to have validated a lot of misogynists as well but then there is a cross over with those demographics!) There has been an escalation in thuggery and violence already due to austerity and the nasty political rhetoric, now there isn't even the illusion of civility.

The latest update from Brighton I saw on Twitter was a total of 3 racist thugs cowering behind a row of police while hundreds of anti-fascists line the streets.

Raasclaat · 07/08/2024 20:02

Its a bloody mockery. Businesses having to board up windows not knowing if its going ahead or not. All so so pointless.

HMTheQueenMuffin · 07/08/2024 20:03

I am. We are in Southampton and shops are boarded up. We have locked our garden gate but tbh anyone could just leap over the wall.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 07/08/2024 20:04

Nothing is going to happen.

loobylou10 · 07/08/2024 20:05

You don't know that @ChardonnaysBeastlyCat

Think it’s ok going by the video I saw

HMTheQueenMuffin · 07/08/2024 20:07

Have you missed the news @ChardonnaysBeastlyCat ?

It's all meant to kick off at 8 pm.

MyKidsAreTooNoisy · 07/08/2024 20:07

I agree with Chardonnay. Where did this list of places even come from. Sadly it’s had a negative impact even if nothing much happens.

MellersSmellers · 07/08/2024 20:09

My DS has been sent home from his local(ish) work as the area is on "the list" but I don't feel nervous, no. I'm thinking they have overstretched themselves now, plus the idiots know what's coming to them now that prosecutions/sentencing have started. In addition, local businesses and police are prepared. However, I'm still angry that all of this is happening. Even if rioting is few and far between tonight, it's still had a big impact on peoples lives and sense of safety. How dare they!

YouMustBeHappyNow · 07/08/2024 20:10

Where have PPs seen the list? I can't find anything.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 07/08/2024 20:11

loobylou10 · 07/08/2024 20:05

Yeah, I’ve read it.

Not going to happen. They ran out of steam.

Homesweethome23 · 07/08/2024 20:11

We are also on the list here and at the moment it’s all quiet. Hopefully it’s all talk and stays that way 🤞🏼

LadyTinHat · 07/08/2024 20:12

Surely there aren’t actually enough far right ‘protesters’ (racist thugs) to cover all these areas? They will be outnumbered from what I can see on the news coverage by the anti-racism side.

They don’t seem to have turned up anywhere so far…have they been scared off?

Raasclaat · 07/08/2024 20:12

Live stream of the Southampton one on Youtube right now. Boring thus far, lets hope it stays that way.

Daily mail have it on their site top story,
also social media pages

I can't believe Brighton. They just had gay Pride last weekend. I saw they are boarding up Budgeons outside the train station.

Also Crawley which is a bog standard working / commuter town that sprung up really in the 1950s and has always been fairly ethnically diverse, plus proximity to London and Gatwick so has lots of employment.

People seem to be travelling from one part of the country to another to do it. Stupid and appalling.
