The Town I live is on the 'list' of planned protests for this Evening. My Work sent all Staff Home before usual closing time.
Town centre is so quiet and Eerie, majority of shops closed and boarded up and even Tesco / Petrol stations plan to close.. we were called to get our click and collect earlier due to the unplanned closure!

So pleased to see that so far in Bristol there's just a large counter protest - hope it stays that way

Ringpeace · 07/08/2024 20:14

Nothing is going to happen.

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if 'the list' was some sort of govt/77 Brigade psyop.

For example, there's just no way a far-right group would bother going to somewhere like Walthamstow. They'd be outnumbered 10-to-1 and get booted into next month.

It's all very odd.

MissFancyDay · 07/08/2024 20:15

My part of London is all boarded up even though it is not on the list.

It's not going to be anywhere near as bad as the papers, twitter, Facebook are making out. There aren't enough racist thugs to go round. Lots of people may "support" the riots but they are not going to be out there throwing bricks and risking prison.

I'm not minimising the awful things that have happened already but it's becoming a bit hysterical now, as usual these days.

TheChosenTwo · 07/08/2024 20:16

My town was on the news last week for its riots (I was on holiday and didn’t know anything about it until I got back), town is apparently all boarded up this afternoon.
We had an email from work to say all staff were able to go home and wfh. I already wfh so didn’t apply to me but I felt it was a sensible measure.
Awful, I didn’t want to go to the supermarket last night - I’ve never felt like this in my own town. I’ve lived here all my life.

Viviennemary · 07/08/2024 20:16

They should just ban those protests, Enough is enough..they are not even protests IMHO.

TheChosenTwo · 07/08/2024 20:17

But really hoping it’s a storm in a teacup and will blow over - fingers crossed 🤞🏾

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 07/08/2024 20:18

@Ahreepdeepdeepdeep at least employers are being sensible and sending employees home to keep safe!!

Raasclaat · 07/08/2024 20:19

Seems to be tourists/locals out to record it (whatever "it" is) as much as anything else. Its all a bit Field of Dreams, if you build it they will come. Any public turning up just for a nosey should hang their heads in shame, turning it into a spectacle with their presence alone spurring them on (Southampton)

feellikeanalien · 07/08/2024 20:19

Well the first convictions are starting to come through so perhaps that will discourage some of them. If a prison term is likely then I think we will see their desperate need to protest fade away. I hope so anyway. It's terrible.

TeaGinandFags · 07/08/2024 20:20

I live in a really rough town.

Anyone trying anything would have their work cut out for them.

We've more hard nuts per square inch (including major terrorist groups) that the police would be rubbing their riot gear with glee. So many promising doors to knock on ...

I think I'll sleep peacefully tonight.

Ahreepdeepdeepdeep · 07/08/2024 20:20

@allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld Oh yes, definitely! Grateful for the sentiment but took a lot of us by surprise, Phones aren't allowed during Shifts so as a Team we had missed a lot of the local concern online!

I was last night but it may not happen

Feckedupbundle · 07/08/2024 20:22

I live very rurally,so no danger of any riots here. However DD was due to work in Birmingham tonight, carrying out bat surveys. I was really worried about her going, especially being a very young lone female driving through unknown areas, and was very relieved that the company decided to cancel. My cousin was due to be working in Brum tomorrow too,and has been told not to go in.

We are lucky in that the worst we will suffer is a lack of wages for the evening. I really feel for those poor people cowering in their homes and businessess. It must be terrifying.

Timeisnevertimeatall · 07/08/2024 19:54

Yes, I feel sick. I'm away and my (young adult) DD is at home in one of the locations, I insisted she got back asap which she did. However, a bit of me wishes I could join the counter protest, I feel redundant in my silence and absence.

WTF would you want any part in that rascist fuggery? Their like a pack of out of control zombies.

NotDavidTennant · 07/08/2024 20:24

This has all been a massive troll. There were never going to be big far right protests in places like Brighton and Oxford.

Some kids somewhere are all having a great laugh.

The counter protesters will just make it worse. It just needs to be left to the police.

Ahreepdeepdeepdeep · 07/08/2024 20:26

@Feckedupbundle Me too, I'm so sad for the local business owners and how they must be feeling this Week! As I drove home from Work, those owners who weren't closing their shops, were stood outside in groups all just looking around Sad

if you do X (Twitter). It’s amazing to see all the counter demonstrations all over the country. Ordinary people standing up to say enough is enough of this rioting nonsense. Don’t let Farage and his ilk scare you - it’s what they want to spread fear and hatred.

daffodilandtulip · 07/08/2024 20:27

It was bad in my area on Saturday and we are on the list tonight. There are reports of crowds in a different area than what was on the list atm. People were sent home from work early and shops/markets closed. I went to Lidl this afternoon and I could feel the tension.

edwinbear · 07/08/2024 20:28

I saw Lewisham was on the ‘list’ this afternoon. They’d have to be really dim to try it on there, with one of the biggest police stations in London with police horses and dogs all readily available.

It looks like the massive numbers of counter protesters have scared off the racist thugs in lots of areas.

platform9andthreequarters · 07/08/2024 20:35

Yeah I am.
I was sticking my head in the sand about it all, whilst it was just in the NW. But my DH is a police officer and they've now been told they are working 12 hour shifts until further notice.
He normally works on a specific team that investigates very serious criminals and is now being pulled off to deal with mindless thugs. Such utter fuckwittery.

Oxford has quite a large counter protest currently happening. Hope it remains peaceful.

Icantbelieveitsnotnutter · 07/08/2024 20:35

I live in the Midlands. One of our senior staff warned us today about the likely protests tonight in Birmingham. We're multicultural as a business and city. A colleague of mine was already verbally abused at the weekend. I really hope this all gets dealt with by the police as much as they can cope with. Many of my non-white friends are worried about going out. We really thought we wouldn't need to worry about this sort of thing in this day and age. It saddens me.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 07/08/2024 20:37

There are people live streaming some of the protests. I mean protests as in what civilized people do, not fighting and mindless vandalism. I’m hopeful that the sensible will win against the violent.
