Temporary tatoos on playdate

Sprogonthetyne · 26/07/2024 13:47

Worried I might have messed up. DD (4) had a friend round for a few hours today, first time with this particular friend, but on friendly terms with her mum from the various class parties we've both sat through.

WIBU to send this kid home with temporary tatoos and kids nail varnish? I totally didn't think about it when the girls were playing dress up/ beauty salon, but it just down on me that not all parents are OK with that stuff.

I would probably send a quick text “hey xx, the kids had a great time playing salon using temporary tattoos and kids nail varnish. Hope that’s ok but let me know if not and I’ll get them washed off”

As someone said above, tattoos come off with oil and a bit of rubbing. Personally I wouldn’t like my child having nail varnish if it wasn’t just wash off stuff but I’d just take it off when we got home

It's the kind of stuff that comes off in the bath.

So much angst about temporary tattoos 😅 My kids used to love them and they were often handed out in party bags etc. They come off fairly easily with baby oil and a bit of a scrub. Neither of them have ended up with full sleeves or tattooed eyeballs! (so far …)

Nail polish is fine but temp tattoos are a no-no in our household as we do not want to encourage their acceptance.

Because God forbid tattoos are accepted 🤣

honestyISkind · 26/07/2024 14:54

It's absolutely fine. 100 percent totally definitely ok.

TheAgileSwan · 26/07/2024 14:57

I wouldn’t have been happy at all. Not only do I not like seeing the tattoos on children more of a concern would have been we had awful issues with DS’s skin reacting to all kinds of things. That said DS would have told you he can’t have them so wouldn’t have happened.
I probably wouldn’t have said anything but I wouldn’t have sent my child to yours again.

hopefully they get some sick sleeves once they turn 18 😜

Why would you hope a child one day defiles themselves? That’s not normal.

Many loathe them but just don’t say anything.

@Mop33444 I think the onus is on the parent of the child with allergies/sensitive skin to inform others rather than expecting them to check. My son had terrible eczema when he was little and I always mentioned to others looking after him that he wasn’t allowed to use normal soap etc.

So now we need to be psychic of what activity will be had on playdate. Thankfully I had friends with reasonable parents who checked as do I.

Back when I was growing up the only tattoos we saw was on petty crims and sailors. I probably wouldn’t have cared less about temp tattoos. But now? They’re so in your face and I don’t want my children thinking that’s okay.

PardontheFrench · 26/07/2024 15:05

I think some of these posters are in for shock in the teenage years…

one minute they are are in Boden and Peppa pig wellies the next they are badgering you for a 2nd nose piercing and telling their in-depth and complex tattoo plans..

Im afraid to say it happens to us all.

Defiles 🤦‍♀️

Ohnobackagain · 26/07/2024 15:06

@Sprogonthetyne why not message other Mum and say ‘hope you don’t mind the polish and temp
tattoos - I should have asked if it was ok but it only occurred to me afterwards - so sorry about that, hope they enjoyed themself’

Yes, god forbid they grow up and get REAL tattoos!!! the horror! 😱

Take a moment to consider some people have religious beliefs that don't permit tattoos. Honestly the ignorance on here at times begins to make sense of how backward the UK can be.

JMSA · 26/07/2024 15:08

I'd be fine with it. How cute!

If you have religious beliefs against tattoos, don't get one. It's not hard.

Oh the irony!

Children can't legally get tattoos

TheKeatingFive · 26/07/2024 15:11

My youngest has bad eczema so the tattoos would not be okay for him. You'd probably know that already though because he has to avoid regular soap and things like that.

HappyVegemite · 26/07/2024 15:11

I think you’re unreasonable to blame this on the kids playing - no four year old I know is capable of independently applying temporary tattoos or painting nails. This is on you.

Id be fine with nail polish but annoyed with temp tattoos - they linger and you have no idea of allergy’s, irritations, etc. Ideally you should have checked beforehand.

Luhou · 26/07/2024 15:13

The kind of parent that would have a problem with this is the kind of parent that would want to stay for the playdate IMO. I don't see an issue.

TheBizzies · 26/07/2024 15:14

I wouldn't give it a second thought - if I had such strong opinions on such things or allergies etc I would tell you beforehand

a mum once didn't tell me her child wasnt allowed coke and I only let the kids have it on school holidays when they had friends round as a treat. I asked the child if he was allowed and says yes! Well you can imagine how that went down 😂 they were 10 by the way !

Chairmanmeoow · 26/07/2024 15:14

Wouldn't bother me, but I appreciate some kids have sensitive skin and so it might be a worry. They seem to be in every single party bag my 5yr old gets though, so tricky to avoid!
I love the peelable kids nail polish. My daughter likes to paint patterns in it on her whole family's nails. And it peels off right away so no issue.

coldcallerbaiter · 26/07/2024 15:15

Fine, it all comes off in a day anyway with baths.

tattygrl · 26/07/2024 15:18

PinkyPonkyLittleDonkey · 26/07/2024 14:42

Yes, I agree - an absolute horror. My children know that tattoos are unacceptable.

From the Amazon description of this book:

"Self-confessed tattoo sceptic Robert Schweizer explores the genesis of a craze driven by social-media and celebrity influencers, rampant narcissism, hype, and the cynical interests of an industry worth billions worldwide.
Is ink on skin really the salve for trauma and mental distress that even ‘health’ websites claim it to be? Is the process itself addictive? Are the numerous ink pigments even safe? What do tattoos say about the wearer (not just the designs, but the decision to have them in the first place)? In these laissez-faire times can ‘body graffiti’ still sabotage career prospects? And can tattoo prejudice be justified?"

OP, as someone with over 30 tattoos you've got me wanting to read this book for a laugh 😂
