Temporary tatoos on playdate

Sprogonthetyne · 26/07/2024 13:47

Worried I might have messed up. DD (4) had a friend round for a few hours today, first time with this particular friend, but on friendly terms with her mum from the various class parties we've both sat through.

WIBU to send this kid home with temporary tatoos and kids nail varnish? I totally didn't think about it when the girls were playing dress up/ beauty salon, but it just down on me that not all parents are OK with that stuff.

Woman in her 60s here. These temporary tattoos have been around since I was a kid, probably before. They came in Lucky Bags etc. I LOVED them as my mother was a right snob about them. I haven’t however ever had a real one and rarely do my nails these days so I don’t think they are anywhere near the slippery slope that some posters think they might be.

That's some playdate!

80s kids used to come home from school with temp tattoos, from the germoline flavoured bubblegum they were actually allowed to chew. Not even Gen X kids!

Most parents let others know of allergies etc before sending them off for free childcare.

Happy children having fun and safe, good for you OP.

yes, instantly reminded me of the 'temporary tattoos' from the 80s or transfers as we called them then. I was mad for them. you'd get one with a 5p bubblegum, stick it to your forearm outside the shop and lick it until it took. Grin Grin

and here I am an unscathed and untattooed 47 year old.

When mine were that age, I would have been a bit pissed off but wouldn’t have said anything.

Eczema and sensitive skin (which it wouldn’t have occurred to me to mention as it’s the case for so many kids), and we would have had to go and buy nail polish remover as I wouldn’t have had any in the house.

Yes and during the reception years for both my children (born five years apart), all parents attended playdates, it's how we got to know each other.

But it's only fairly recently that children attended age 4, in the 70s children went when they were 5, and 5 is compulsory school age still, so yes four is young.

I think it depends. I wouldn't host 4 year olds without their parents unless I knew them and their parents well. My God daughter who I have known since a baby has been round hers on her own since 3.

I think the point of the kids’ polish is that it doesn’t need remover.

@Priggishsausagebore - 4 is too young to be left alone at a play date?? Most kids in the UK start school at that age!

The kids went to the same school nursery and start reception in September. In the class it seems to be a mix with some parents staying and some dropping off. The mum was given the option.

It's kids nail varnish. It comes off in the bath.

I also don't own nail polish remover, and wouldn't be using it on a 4yo if I did.

While parents who don’t have the manners nor cop on to ask permission would be getting an earful from me. Surely you considered other parents have different rules?

An earful? Your child will be a very lonely child with a parent like you.

Nail polish is fine but temp tattoos are a no-no in our household as we do not want to encourage their acceptance.

😂😂

Idontknowwhattocallmyself1 · 27/07/2024 14:33

Just send the other parents a text explaining it's polish that comes off in bath and tattoo can be removed with baby oil and do they want you to remove them before pick up, and add a line to say "I'm sorry, I should have asked but didn't think to!"

Someone looked after your DC for you and you'd give them an earful?

YABU, plenty don’t allow them or have concerns about allergies. I would be annoyed as I never allowed makeup and spent weeks treating eczema flare ups when transfers were used. You need to ask the parent for permission.

If you're leaving your child in someone else's care it is up to you to inform them of any allergies or sensitivities

Exactly. If your DC has this issue it is your responsibility to tell the parent you are leaving your DC with, surely?

Baby oil and cotton wool shifts temporary tattoos for anyone who needs them off quickly

I could've done with you a few weeks ago! We went to efteling and one of the fairies gave DS a temporary fairy tattoo, usually he wouldn't have them but we were on holiday and in his words an actual fairy gave it to him, so I relented, the bloody thing wouldn't come off, I ended up using face scrub and a flannel

If he gets them again, baby oil really does work. DD often has them over the weekend and I take them off at Bath time on Sunday night, ready for school on Monday.

Some people truly are odd. 😂 It’s things like this you’d remember 20 years later..remember that time xx had a friend over and we ended up getting an earful from her mum for letting her have a unicorn tattoo.

Let's face it, every circle of families has an unsuitable member. We were the Unsuitables in our circle: 6 year olds would watch Dodgeball and go home asking, Mummy what's a muff diver? Everyone survived.

I definitely went through a large obsession stage had sheets of temporary tattoos, even had Garbage Pail kids ones which I refused to wash off!

Temporary is still the only kind of tattoo I have ever had too.

Sunshineandpool · 28/07/2024 10:11

I have a tattoo of my DC's names. It certainly wasn't influenced by temporary tattoos when I was younger!! 😂

My sister was in the first year to start school at four years old-she’s 38 now so it’s not that recent that children started school at 4.
