The dog's breed was yet to be confirmed but it was not believed to be a banned breed, the force explained.

I suspect it will be a breed that should have been banned but wasn't. Poor, poor woman Flowers

daffodilandtulip · 22/07/2024 22:30

It was a Belgian malinois.

Oldseagull · 22/07/2024 22:33

daffodilandtulip · 22/07/2024 22:30

It was a Belgian malinois.

Oh ffs.

That is NOT a domestic house pet. If you aren't going to out of the house working that dog breed all day then you shouldn't own one.

Fiercely intelligent. Energy and drive to go all day. Able to scale fucking trees if they want to. Fantastic dogs in the right, extremely experienced hands

I wouldn't be averse to having certain dogs classified as 'for working homes only' but have no idea how that could be enforced. As it stands any moron can buy any dog, no matter how unsuitable.

SilenceInside · 22/07/2024 22:35

News report in the Mail said it was a Bull Mastiff. She'd only had it a couple of months apparently.

Vrunkydunk · 22/07/2024 22:35

Awful. I don't even know what can be done. I'm all for banning breeds but how does it get enforced and what stops other breeds popping up? It's scary especially now dogs are everywhere.

MouseofCommons · 22/07/2024 22:40

"any moron can buy any dog, no matter how unsuitable..."
I've seen this in my street. One couple in a flat, who both walked with sticks, owned a German shepherd they couldn't control. I reported them to the dog warden sharpish.

Cheeesus · 22/07/2024 22:43

daffodilandtulip · 22/07/2024 22:30

It was a Belgian malinois.

That was the one a few days ago I think? On the 16th? Wikipedia may be confused though.

daffodilandtulip · 22/07/2024 22:46

@Cheeesus oh I think you're right. How odd that they're both in Coventry?

daffodilandtulip · 22/07/2024 22:47

Just because it wasn't a banned breed, doesn't mean it was a suitable breed. Or a suitable owner. The amount of dogs never walked and never trained astounds me.

diktat · 22/07/2024 22:48

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Glad no kids were hurt.

MorvernBlack · 22/07/2024 22:54

A witness is saying on TwiX that the dog was frightened and the couple had been abusing it. A bully cross, not a Malinois.

Aroastdinnerisnotahumanright · 22/07/2024 23:11

Whenever they say not a banned breed it seems to mean a bully mix.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 22/07/2024 23:20

All dogs a toddler couldn’t beat in a fight should be banned.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 22/07/2024 23:23

I'm not afraid of big Jawad dogs in theory but rather their fuckfull owners. Saying that, I am really shocked that it was the owner herself and not a child that got hurt .

That is awful.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 22/07/2024 23:20

All dogs a toddler couldn’t beat in a fight should be banned.

So all dogs banned then? The smallest breeds (chihuahuas) are the devil incarnate and would tear a toddler to shreds. Nasty little dogs.

Some bigger breeds are soft as hell.

thursdaymurderclub · 22/07/2024 23:27

its not always the dogs, its the owners! i was walking in town today with DH and a couple approached us, they had this big bull dog thing on a lead and it was pulling and tugging ahead.. we were simply walking past and i smiled at the dog cos he was clearly up for a good run and the bloke.. the usual type (apols for sterotyping here) bald, fat, short, tattoos and a cig sneered at me and said 'hes not going to eat you!' and laughed. what an odd thing to say when all i did was smile at the dog

Chipshopninja · 22/07/2024 23:27

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 22/07/2024 23:20

All dogs a toddler couldn’t beat in a fight should be banned.

I can't imagine a toddler beating any dog in a fight, especially not the smallest of all a chihuahua.

Toddlers do not fight. They do not understand and appreciate danger in the samenway as older children and adults

Your logic is flawed

urbanbuddha · 22/07/2024 23:28

It’s a pity there can’t be a test for dog ownership. Like a driving test with a theory test before you can take one home.

Chipshopninja · 22/07/2024 23:28

Cross post!

There are hoops to jump through if you want a rescue dog, and rightly so. And responsible breeders will also thoroughly vet potential homes.

But the greatest threat of all to a person is other people... and there is no vetting for parenthood.

Ok, maybe you should ban all adults too. More kids ( & adults for that matter) injured & killed by other people! It's just that a dog bite/ attack grabs headlines. Someone local to me killed in machete attack just this week. Nothing in the news. A knife attack locally a few weeks ago, nothing in the news.
What would you suggest? Ban teenagers?! Ban men?! FGS.

Why would you want a toddler to fight a dog?
