Why would you want a toddler to fight a dog?

Some people will bet on anything.

I wouldn't even bet on a toddler against a roomba

Isittimeformynapyet · 22/07/2024 23:46

I can't vote because there's no logical YABU/YANBU in the OP.

I don’t. But if the dog attacks, then the toddler needs to be able to fight back and win.

For those who insist on dragging an animal about at the end of a bit of string, it shouldn’t really matter what kind of dog as they’re all fake anyway. For everyone else, AKA the collatoral damage, we’d benefit greatly if we could be sure our toddlers came home with their faces and bellies intact.

XenoBitch · 22/07/2024 23:26

So all dogs banned then? The smallest breeds (chihuahuas) are the devil incarnate and would tear a toddler to shreds. Nasty little dogs.

Some bigger breeds are soft as hell.

Not this ignorant bullshit again.

Even a vaguely competently trained and socialised chihuahua is a fantastic dog.

It's just that the morons with a touch of self awareness and self preservation get them, don't train them, don't socialise them properly and think it's funny to scare/agitate them for videos online.

PyongyangKipperbang · 23/07/2024 00:03

I am still, after all these years, amazed that my NDN have never experienced a dog attack. They have had 3 or 4 German Shepherds over the years I have lived here and I have NEVER seen any of them walked. They have a tiny garden, think smaller than your average lounge. They were loved in the emotional sense but never given the care they needed. They currently have at least one, may be two, and a smaller breed, not sure what it is as I have only seen that once and that was when it was being put in the car, presumably to go to kennels when they were going away. All the dogs were there their whole lives from puppyhood, I think one was PTS due to illness but AFAIK the others died of age/natural causes.

Sadly, this does not meet the level of neglect required for intervention, and I know this as the RSPCA told me so when I rang, concerned for their young children mainly.

Toddlers don't know how to fight back. They are small children. If you have a toddler and you feel the need to teach them how to fight, then social services need to see you.

You post on all dog threads about how dogs should not exist.

It was a Belgian malinois.

Again!??? Im sure there was another case of this breed in the news not long back

marshmallowboy · 23/07/2024 00:09

I'm surprised at it being a Malinois. They are not common dogs. Also lovely but that's a diffrent question, I mean you can't just get one from the local pound.

IncessantNameChanger · 23/07/2024 00:17

Lots of people have working dogs as pets and don't work them. I'm no expert as I had a dappy spaniel, but surely if you get them exercised and using their brains they are OK pets? How many people really work their collies and cocker spaniels? Not that many I'd bet

Yep, my neighbour has a spaniel (not sure what variety... either springer or cocker), she comes home from work and screams bloody murder at it for peeing indoors. It also howls all day... such a sad howl too.
I think he is 3 now, so not a pup. Covid dog.

My friend has a Malinois, he had a husky before
But he works shifts and she can go with him, he runs miles and she goes too. I looked after the husky for 10 days, walked her 10km one day. She napped for 20 mins and was asking to go again Blush walked my legs off!
He's used to high energy dogs

PyongyangKipperbang · 23/07/2024 00:28

All these fucking Covid dogs.

If there was another lockdown, I would make it illegal to sell or otherwise rehome dogs until it was over.

Gagaandgag · 25/07/2024 08:14

Apparently not a Malinois? American bulldog.

It’s a pity there can’t be a test for dog ownership. Like a driving test with a theory test before you can take one home.

I agree. I think dog owners need to undertake some sort of training for the breed of dog they are buying. I work in the community, I've been bitten by a dog in a patients house, the owner could not control the dog. Another time, I went to a property and there was a border collie who was living in a flat. The doors etc were wrecked by the dog as he was clearly locked up a lot of the time. On arrival the dog had just bitten the owner. I have never been so terrified. In the end myself and my colleague left as it was clear the dog wanted to get to us. I think if you have a dog you need to understand the breed and be able to provide the dog with walks, space for excersing etc. My son would love a dog, but myself and dh work full time. We could not give adequate time to a dog at the moment. It certainly wouldn't be fair to the dog. I don't think a lot of people think through what owning a dog actually entails. They see a cute puppy, and that's it. Don't get me wrong, I know lots of people who are sensible dog owners too. But something needs to change.

JMSA · 25/07/2024 08:48

I haven't clicked the link. But someone has mentioned the dog was abused, so my sympathy has just gone straight out the window.

hookiewookie29 · 25/07/2024 09:37

I live in Coventry.
The dog was an American Bulldog.
It attacked her whilst she was having an epileptic fit- it's not unknown for dogs to do this.

CharlotteLightandDark · 25/07/2024 09:41

It was a Malinois that killed the baby last week I believe

Galoop · 25/07/2024 09:41

Oldseagull · 22/07/2024 22:33

Oh ffs.

That is NOT a domestic house pet. If you aren't going to out of the house working that dog breed all day then you shouldn't own one.

Fiercely intelligent. Energy and drive to go all day. Able to scale fucking trees if they want to. Fantastic dogs in the right, extremely experienced hands

I wouldn't be averse to having certain dogs classified as 'for working homes only' but have no idea how that could be enforced. As it stands any moron can buy any dog, no matter how unsuitable.

Edited

This is really interesting. I saw something on Facebook weirdly that was explaining the different breeds and traits of all dogs. It does make you think that this really needs to be monitored more closely, if only from a non-cruelty aspect for dogs, but also safety for people. Everything else is governed, this needs to be too.

Is it just me that notices that most dog attacks with the dangerous breeds more often than not live in the poorer areas of cities, or poor housing estates, why is this?

They also don't treat them as dogs. They're treated as toys to be picked up and carried around in handbags. Dogs need to be treated as dogs, irrespective of their size. They're judged as dogs, so need to be trained as dogs.

GravitasShortfall · 25/07/2024 10:03

@PyongyangKipperbang My grandmothers neighbours had two German shepherds kept 24/7 in a small pen in the garden when I was a child. Never walked. We also had a (lovely, well trained and socialised) German shepherd, and I was apparently obsessed as a toddler about staring through the gaps in the old wooden fence to look at them.

One night a cat got in to the pen and was torn apart. The noise woke my grandmother. She made my grandfather go out the following day and buy proper 6ft fence panels in case they ever escaped their pen.

I have no idea why people buy dogs to treat them like that. Every shepherd my parents had was a joy, a great family dog, but the potential is there in every dog if the owners don’t understand the breed and its needs.

daffodilandtulip · 22/07/2024 22:30

It was a Belgian malinois.

Yip, that'd do it. These types of dogs aren't suitable for a domestic setting.

We'll see more of these attacks now because the hard of thinking people have sought out unsuitable replacements for their xl bullies.

Rhodesian Ridgeback anyone? Or perhaps a nice, cuddly Caucasian Shepherd 🙄
