It’s a pity there can’t be a test for dog ownership. Like a driving test with a theory test before you can take one home.

i also think a welfare check should be done before you own a dog to see if the breed suits you and your life style and environment. eg a tiny chihuahua getting walked twice or even just once a day May well be completely fine living in a flat a large dog being left in alone all day and never being taken for walks is highly likely to have disastrous outcomes

All dogs a toddler couldn’t beat in a fight should be banned.

That's ridiculous.

I have a cat that could harm a toddler if he wanted to. Ban those too?

lawnseed · 25/07/2024 10:11

Restrict dog ownership to certain types and sizes. Anyone whose ego and social standing depends on what animal they have on the end of the lead need therapy, not a larger dog. Owning a dog should not be an automatic right.

K0OLA1D · 25/07/2024 10:12

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 23/07/2024 00:02

I don’t. But if the dog attacks, then the toddler needs to be able to fight back and win.

For those who insist on dragging an animal about at the end of a bit of string, it shouldn’t really matter what kind of dog as they’re all fake anyway. For everyone else, AKA the collatoral damage, we’d benefit greatly if we could be sure our toddlers came home with their faces and bellies intact.

My dog mostly takes his walks off lead, so no dragging involved

Hoppinggreen · 25/07/2024 10:12

Whatever the breed turns out to be I am pretty sure we can assume she or someone else bought the dog under dubious circumstances, thats the usual common denominator

hookiewookie29 · 25/07/2024 09:37

I live in Coventry.
The dog was an American Bulldog.
It attacked her whilst she was having an epileptic fit- it's not unknown for dogs to do this.

I did some reading on dog attacks and it seems this is quite a common scenario. The dogs apparently often try to pick the owners up by their necks during the seizures.

Great idea
We could video the fights and charge per view.
Maybe pitch the idea to Elon Musk?

Galoop · 25/07/2024 10:21

lawnseed · 25/07/2024 10:07

Yip, that'd do it. These types of dogs aren't suitable for a domestic setting.

We'll see more of these attacks now because the hard of thinking people have sought out unsuitable replacements for their xl bullies.

Rhodesian Ridgeback anyone? Or perhaps a nice, cuddly Caucasian Shepherd 🙄

First google search re Rhodesian Ridgeback "Ridgebacks are protective of children and other household members. These are excellent natural watchdogs and family protectors".
Caucasian Shepherd, my gosh. Gorgeous, but terrifying! Looks like a cuddly Lion.
This is exactly why this needs to be monitored, I can see how the hard of thinking would easily see why these might be suitable or at least a 'cute' pet to have.

ARichtGoodDram · 25/07/2024 10:21

Even a well trained dog can be freaked out by someone having a seizure.

This case might not be as simple as shit owners - badly trained dog.

There does seem to have been a spate of deaths by dog in Coventry recently!

My friend has a Malinois, he had a husky before
But he works shifts and she can go with him, he runs miles and she goes too. I looked after the husky for 10 days, walked her 10km one day. She napped for 20 mins and was asking to go again Blush walked my legs off!
He's used to high energy dogs

Well that’s okay as he obviously had the time and energy to devote to them.

RRs are not suitable as a domestic pet, particularly if the owner can't train them, which these people can't.

And 'protective' generally means they will attack if they feel threatened. These are traditionally hunting and guarding dogs. These are not beginner dogs or dogs for someone in a small house or flat.

Play stupid games, win stupid prizes. Glad no kids were hurt

This.

If news reports are accurate:

  • It was a Bullmastiff.
  • The woman had had the adult dog for a couple of months.
  • She had known 'poor health'.
  • She was unemployed.
  • She and the dog lived in a flat.
  • When the attack happened she had only 'popped home briefly' to the flat, after being away the night before.

Who the fuck gets this kind of dog in a FLAT, whilst unemployed (dogs are expensive to properly care for) and in poor health...then fucks off overnight to the boyfriends and leaves it.

Every time I read one of these, the main thing I'm thankful for is that it's the owners suffering the consequences of their own appalling decisions and actions and not some poor bystander.

Scarletrunner · 25/07/2024 10:42

I understand Rhodesian Ridgebacks were used for lion hunting back in the day - hardly a cuddly playmate

K0OLA1D · 25/07/2024 10:45

There were 2 RR pups in the puppy class we took our dog to and they were lovely lovely dogs. They had acres of land where they lived though. As lovely as they were I wouldn't have one due to not being able to control one.

Cattery · 25/07/2024 10:46

People who covet these dogs have an IQ to match the animal’s

okthenwhat · 25/07/2024 10:52

This needs to be taken as a public safety announcment - if people are prone to seizures for whatever reason, think VERY HARD AND LONG about getting a dog, particularly if it is not an official, trained seizure alert dog.

ESPECIALLY a mastiff/bully type. Mastiff/bully types have a long, very long, history of attacking their owner who is having a seizure - just google it.

NoCoco · 25/07/2024 10:52

I used to think it was the breed but I think the owner has more to do with it. My neighbour got a rottweiler and Ill admit i was worried it was an agreesive breed. But I see him training the dog every day, going on 2 hour walks twice a day and the dog never barks or acts dangerously.
Some if these owners look like they can't look after a goldfish, there's no way they are putting the work in. Unfortunately this is the result.

My best friend had a rottie, who sadly died at 6 from cancer and she was the most amazing dog.

She had a lab cross after and has sadly had to remove, even with multiple behaviourist and time and training due to her snapping and resource guarding. The risk was just not worth it with children.

@brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

what a ridiculous comment

Startingagainandagain · 25/07/2024 11:09

Well, men commit most violent crimes.

Do you suggest we ban all men too?

What else do you want to ban? Trees because a branch might fall on someone, cars because of the potential for accidents? steps because someone might trip?

These anti-dogs threads are tedious to the extreme now.

KatiesMumWoof · 25/07/2024 11:10

PyongyangKipperbang · 23/07/2024 00:28

All these fucking Covid dogs.

If there was another lockdown, I would make it illegal to sell or otherwise rehome dogs until it was over.

@PyongyangKipperbang

think that through! It's not the solution you think it is.

MulberryBushRoundabout · 25/07/2024 11:18

It’s breed AND owner.

No one who lives an average lifestyle needs a guardian breed, and frankly they shouldn’t be allowed to have one. If that means some guardian breeds die out, honestly I don’t care, dog breeds are a human invention, it’s not the same as rhinos going extinct.

In this case, if all of the above points about the owner are true, she wasn’t suitable for dog ownership at all.

guineverehadgreeneyes · 25/07/2024 11:42

"These anti-dogs threads are tedious to the extreme now."

What's "tedious to the extreme" is the number of dogs attacking humans.

summersingsinme · 25/07/2024 11:53

Jen63 · 22/07/2024 23:32

Ok, maybe you should ban all adults too. More kids ( & adults for that matter) injured & killed by other people! It's just that a dog bite/ attack grabs headlines. Someone local to me killed in machete attack just this week. Nothing in the news. A knife attack locally a few weeks ago, nothing in the news.
What would you suggest? Ban teenagers?! Ban men?! FGS.

I understand where you are coming from but we have laws in place, and systems of confinement and punishment for humans who break those laws. Dogs are incapable of understanding and following laws, and the only punishment we can given them is killing them.

It's not a fair comparison.

I love dogs but it is ridiculous that there are domestic pets that can kill people, if you really think about it. I'd be more supportive of proper controls being put in place around ownership though, rather than outright bans (better for the animals too!).
