To ask when your local chippy is open?

Really random question I know but..

DH and I are away for a weekend in West Yorkshire. Had a lovely long walk yesterday and thought we'd have a chippy tea after. None of the chip shops we tried (about 4) were open. Nevermind, we said, we'll have them for Sunday lunch. A quick google revealed that all of them in the local area were closed both Saturday evening and all day Sunday. This is really unusual where we live (Midlands) and where DH is from (Glasgow-ish) But perhaps we are in a minority and most people are not having fish and chips on a Saturday night?!

Saturday night is a busy night for our chippy…that’s odd.

Differentstarts · 21/07/2024 19:19

No that's weird iv just looked and ours are open about 10 am to 10pm some 11pm Monday to Saturday and then 11am until 8.30 pm Sunday

Itsausername91 · 21/07/2024 19:21

Around here they're all closed on a Sunday, which is always when we fancy a chippy tea!!

InfoSecInTheCity · 21/07/2024 19:34

Midlands too and Sunday is the only day they're closed.

dancingqueen345 · 21/07/2024 19:34

Saturday night is odd, would definitely expect them to be open. Chippys around me are always closed Sunday though which drives my partner (from a part of the country where Sunday chippys are religion) absolutely mad 🤣🤣

ToofHurty · 21/07/2024 19:35

Both of ours close at 8.30pm every night which I think is really early for Friday and Saturday nights, and they’re not open Sunday or Monday.

JohnTheRevelator · 21/07/2024 19:38

My local chippy is open midday - 2pm,then 5pm - 11pm, Monday to Saturday.

ElaineMBenes · 21/07/2024 19:44

I'm from West Yorkshire and the chip shops local to me would not open Saturday tea time or at all on a Sunday or Monday.

Canonlythinkofthisone · 21/07/2024 19:46

Ahshahah we moved from the Midlands to Yorkshire.
Not only do they not do pineapple fritters round here which is a travesty, but they all mostly shut at 6pm? That's WAAAYYY to early for my "tea" time so. They're not open sunday/Monday either it's MENTAL 🤣
We've genuinely discussed moving back to the Midlands over it haha

Bjorkdidit · 21/07/2024 19:47

I live in West Yorkshire. Many small family run chippies only open at dinner (midday) and tea time (early evening). They'd generally not open on Saturday tea time, Sunday or possibly Monday either.

Although the nearest one to me does open 11.30 to 8 Monday to Saturday.

You'd probably want a bigger chain to guarantee being open at 4 on a Saturday. If you're near a Wetherby Whaler, they're good and have longer opening hours.

ElaineMBenes · 21/07/2024 19:50

The reason they aren't open on a Monday is tradition. The fishing boats wouldn't have gone out on a Sunday so there wouldn't have been fresh fish available.

Traditional chip shops don't open on Monday because fishing boats don't go out on Sunday so the fish wouldn't be fresh.

"About 4"?
Was it three, or five or actually four?

KreedKafer · 21/07/2024 19:54

There are two chip shops near us that we use - one’s open 11.30am to 9.30pm Monday to Friday and 12pm to 8.30pm on Saturdays, then closed all day Sunday. The other one’s open 4.30pm to 8.30pm Tuesday to Saturday. I live in Manchester and would think it was bloody weird to close a chip shop on Saturdays! I’m originally from London / south-east and none of the chip shops I used back there were closed on Saturday night either.

sciencemama · 21/07/2024 19:55

Kent here
Local one opens at 10 - 1 then reopens at 4-10. Closed by 3 on Saturday nd closed on Sundays

AstonMartha · 21/07/2024 19:56

We have a chip van that comes once a fortnight. We have to drive four miles to the van.

rumred · 21/07/2024 19:56

Our best local chippy, near Bradford, is often shut at what seems to be odd times. No idea what their thinking is but it's crap.

llamajohn · 21/07/2024 19:56

Mon - sat 11am-2 pm and 4:30-9pm
Closed on Sundays

mitogoshi · 21/07/2024 19:57

Ours is open midday to 8.30pm Mon-Sat then midday-6pm Sunday but it's also a fish restaurant

Concernedpasserby · 21/07/2024 19:58

Manchester - its very mixed so you can always find one.
Ours are open Sat evening but quite a few close Saturday day time. Most closed Sunday but some open Sunday evening.
Mon & Wed seem to be common days to be closed all day.

I think it was actually 4. 2 towns/villages with 1 each and 1 with 2! Might have been more but they were the ones we noticed

I love a pineapple fritter! Only the Chinese near me does them though, not the chippy. The opening hours thing has blown my tiny mind a bit - I never realised it was a regional thing.

The chippy on my uni campus used to closed at about half 9 which was very annoying as you couldn't go for post pub chips - now I'm older I can understand why they didn't want loads of drunk students piling in at 11pm!

Wait until you find out what our fish cakes are like, should you still be here to find an open chippy. And the scallops.

MuddlingThrough1724 · 21/07/2024 20:09

We don't have a chip shop in the village but a van that comes one day a week from 12-7pm. I thought packing up at 7 was early as by the time we are home from work/kids evening clubs, they've gone! If they stayed even an extra hour we'd probably use most weeks 🤣 Maybe best for the waistline that they do pack up early!

My local chippy had scallops when I was little (assuming you mean the potato ones?) I haven't had one for years. Sadly we are on the way home now without chips but will be back and will plan chippy visit more carefully!
