To ask when your local chippy is open?

Really random question I know but..

DH and I are away for a weekend in West Yorkshire. Had a lovely long walk yesterday and thought we'd have a chippy tea after. None of the chip shops we tried (about 4) were open. Nevermind, we said, we'll have them for Sunday lunch. A quick google revealed that all of them in the local area were closed both Saturday evening and all day Sunday. This is really unusual where we live (Midlands) and where DH is from (Glasgow-ish) But perhaps we are in a minority and most people are not having fish and chips on a Saturday night?!

Just to add, you MUST visit the Wetherby Whaler. The best fish and chips ever.

ElaineMBenes · 21/07/2024 22:14

Apologies, I should have read thread. I've just posted same thin!
Are you from a fishing area?

No worries!
No, but I lived with someone at uni who did and I remember him telling me this 😂

ilovepixie · 21/07/2024 22:18

Northern Ireland chippys open all day everyday. Some stay open late late to get the drinkers coming home!

ilovepixie · 21/07/2024 22:19

What chippy doesn't open Saturday evening! Isn't that like the busiest time!

The reason they aren't open on a Monday is tradition. The fishing boats wouldn't have gone out on a Sunday so there wouldn't have been fresh fish available.

That would only apply to chippys selling mainly fish. And ones on the coast. Most now sell loads more than just fish

Emmerald · 21/07/2024 22:24

Our local chippy is open 11:30-1:30pm and 4:30-7:30pm tues, Wed, fri, sat. The queues at 11:30 are unbelievable!

Andthereitis · 21/07/2024 22:25

Don't go to Ripon on a Monday. The pubs and restaurants round about are all shut.

AndForAFortnightThereWeWereForever · 21/07/2024 22:30

I live in a small market town with 7,000 people (this figure includes 7 surrounding villages within 3 miles.) Has 2 chippies. 1.5 to 2 miles apart.

Main one opens 11.30am to 1.30pm, and then again 3.30pm to 11pm. First opening time gets the lunchtime people, second time gets the schoolkids coming out, and people wanting a chippy tea, and then later on in the night time it gets people coming out of the pub.

The other chippy just opens 5pm til 10pm.

Not in West Yorkshire they don't. They might have pies and sausages on the menu, but 80/90% of trade will be fish and chips, or possibly a fishcake or potato scallops.

Most of the fish and chip shops remain very traditional, sticking to their roots and doing it very well.

milkysmum · 21/07/2024 22:51

The chip shop in our village isn't open at all on weekends! Also the owners gave several holidays a year and when they go away the shop is shut completely, they never get anyone in to cover,

I remember getting off a ferry at 7.15pm when cycling/camping in the western isles, and finding that the nearby chip shop shut at 7pm. That was annoying.

03cg73 · 21/07/2024 23:03

Ours is open mid-day till 11.30pm, 7 days a week

What time did you actually try to go, OP? I’m very surprised that any fish and chip shop would be closed every Saturday night, but the ones near where I live and also on the UK places we visit on holiday seem to close ridiculously early (like 7.30pm). Were you later that that?

I would say it’s quite normal to be closed on Sundays though.

It was about 5pm. We finished a walk and looked up the opening hours of the one nearest where we were staying. Discovered it wasn't open at all on a Saturday night. We thought we'd pick some up on the way back but the 2 we drove past were also closed. Realised there was another small one near our cottage but also closed. Wasn't too surprised about Sundays but our local one is open.

Ours are closed Sunday/Monday which makes sense. Being closed on a Saturday evening seems bonkers! Maybe everyone has their chippy tea on a Friday and that's that? 😁

Shortbread49 · 21/07/2024 23:24

Yes but the wetherby whaler in wetherby i am
in york and that’s not as good

HolyPeaches · 21/07/2024 23:25

I live in South Yorkshire

We have 6 chippies in our small town 😂

The one I use is: 11:30am - 9:00pm Mon-Sat. Closed Sundays.

It’s more traditional for locals here to have Sunday roasts. Can’t think of anyone who has fish and chips on Sundays.

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 21/07/2024 23:29

Ours is 11am to 10pm Monday to Saturday. It also has a restaurant part if you want to eat in.

Crystallizedring · 21/07/2024 23:34

That does sound strange. All our local fish and chip shops are open on Saturday. Closing time varries from 9 until 11:30 depending where we go.
None are open Sunday.
I guess traditional night for fish and chips is Friday but even in the tiny village I grew up in the chippy was open Saturday night.

Footballsunday727727227 · 22/07/2024 05:59

We are in North Yorks in a small market town and our chippy closes on a Sunday, and then sat PM as well. It’s only open for lunch on a sat, so 11.30-1.30pm.
The rest of the week it’s split opening , 1130-1.30pm and 4.30pm-7.30pm.

During the week also we have the most amazing mobile fish and chip van that visits the town once a week, (goes around the villages and towns). That’s open a short window on our day between 5.30pm-6.20pm

These are the best ones, the others shouldn’t actually call themselves fish and chip shops because they just don’t do it well enough (and also don’t count for this thread 😉). They’re takeaways not chippies.

ElinoristhenewEnid · 22/07/2024 07:49

We have a chippy in our town open to 3 am on Friday and Saturday nights!

Sethera · 22/07/2024 07:56

W. Yorks here and they vary - the one in town is open 11 - 6 every day except Sunday. The one nearest me is 11:30 - 7 daily but it's not very good.

DilemmaDelilah · 22/07/2024 07:59

Our local chippie didn't open until 6pm. I think you were just too early. They have closed now (retirement) so we have to go somewhere else - they have longer hours but I don't think they're open until 5pm.

Gorgonemilezola · 22/07/2024 08:04

The proper chippies (the ones that serve f&c and the odd pie and battered sav, not the ones that also do pizza, fried chicken, kebabs etc) don't open on Sundays and also, frustratingly, close at 7pm other nights so if we have f&c it's for Saturday lunch.

The shops at the seaside are open on Sunday.

No they were definitely all closed Saturday evening. We checked opening times online. Was really surprised
