To ask when your local chippy is open?

Really random question I know but..

DH and I are away for a weekend in West Yorkshire. Had a lovely long walk yesterday and thought we'd have a chippy tea after. None of the chip shops we tried (about 4) were open. Nevermind, we said, we'll have them for Sunday lunch. A quick google revealed that all of them in the local area were closed both Saturday evening and all day Sunday. This is really unusual where we live (Midlands) and where DH is from (Glasgow-ish) But perhaps we are in a minority and most people are not having fish and chips on a Saturday night?!

OP posts:
Boopbeepbeepboop · 21/07/2024 20:10

Sunday 4–10:30 pm
Monday 4–11 pm
Tuesday 3–10:30 pm
Wednesday 3–11 pm
Thursday 3:30–11:30 pm
Friday 12–11 pm
Saturday 11:30 am–11 pm

Copied and pasted obviously! 🤣

Saturday night is a busy night for our chippy…that’s odd.

Same here, 2nd biggest night -Friday is the biggest. Ours is closed all day Sunday and Monday lunch but does Monday night. Does close too early l think -830 or 900pm

Anonym00se · 21/07/2024 20:15

Merseyside. Ours are open lunchtime till 11.30/12pm Mon-Sat. You’ll find the odd one open on Sunday.

Similarly, I remember staying Derbyshire/South Yorkshire for work and went into the nearest pub to get food. I tried to order at the bar and the landlord said they’d finished serving food for the day. I asked which other pubs locally would still be serving and he said “Oh no, you won’t find anywhere to eat round here. Not at this time”. It was 6pm on a weeknight!

theredspindletree · 21/07/2024 20:25

East Anglia and ours is closed all day Sunday and Monday and all other days opens lunchtime for a couple of hours, then 5pm until about 9pm.

ApolloandDaphne · 21/07/2024 20:34

Ours is very popular and in a busy seaside town. It's open 11.30 am to 9.30 pm every day.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 21/07/2024 21:13

I knew this would be Yorkshire! I've live in S & W Yorks for nearly 30 years, and i've long said that the chip shops are never open at useful times. I wish I could tell you when our local chippy was open, but the two nearest me have closed for good recently. The next nearest has these helpful times. There's another one locally that opens to order, but only if they receive x number (12 maybe?) telephone orders beforehand !

There is a really good chippy about 7 miles away /15 min drive that is open from mid morning to late evening every day, and is constantly busy. It's just too far to get the food home warm and it's really difficult to park.

To ask when your local chippy is open?
Cakencookieobsessed · 21/07/2024 21:19

Most near me are open every day from 11.30 to 1.30pm then 4.15pm till about half 11 at night. There are 2 that are closed on Tuesdays but that's rare.

Shortbread49 · 21/07/2024 21:21

GettingAroundTown · 21/07/2024 21:25

ilovesooty · 21/07/2024 21:31

This is our closest one, but the ones on the seafront about a twenty minute walk away are open 11:30-9/10 all week this time of year. Winter time they usually only open in the late afternoon/evenings and close a couple of days in the week.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 21/07/2024 21:37

Seaside town south east

FunIsland · 21/07/2024 21:39

Proper ones (i.e the ones that only sell fish and chips as opposed to burgers, kebabs etc) open at ridiculously inconvenient times in Yorkshire.

I just don’t get it. I’ve been here nearly thirty years and it still frustrates me.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 21/07/2024 21:39

For people wanting after pub chips, that's what kebab shops are for!

Amandasummers · 21/07/2024 21:41

Our local is open tues-sat 4pm-8pm. Ridiculous hours and I’ve no idea how they make enough money to bother with it!

ChilliSquib · 21/07/2024 21:42

It's illegal to sell a fried fish on a Sunday.

We've got a fish and chip shop and a Chinese takeaway. Sunday is traditionally the day that chip shops are closed because it was (and still is) against the law to sell a fried fish on a Sunday although nobody takes any notice of that any more.

Then many of the smaller shops decide to close on a Monday as well so they can get two consecutive days off.

Chinese takeaways traditionally close on a Tuesday.

bluecomputerscreen · 21/07/2024 21:43

not uk
closest closes when sold out of fish, which can be as early as 4:30
not open sunday and mondays.

Ineffable23 · 21/07/2024 21:43

The only time mine isn't open if Sunday lunch - it opens for dinner still.

clouudly · 21/07/2024 21:46

Our nearest one is open 11am-10pm Sun- Wed, 11am-11pm Thu-Sat. London zone 2, it's part of a small chain and has a good reputation so lots of people travel to go there. After 11pm I expect there are other places to get chips like kebab shops, there are tons of takeaways around here.

It used to be for the really small ones run by a couple that if they limited the hours they could stay under the VAT threshold so be a bit cheaper and still make a decent living. Possibly combined with other work elsewhere.

I don't know if it still works like this, but is one explanation.

I'm not particularly surprised by those opening hours, although I'd expect them to open at lunchtime Thursday to Saturday too, but maybe they've decided it's not worth it to them.

But 4 until 8 seems normal opening times for evening meals. They might not sell much before 5 but they'll be able to use the time to prepare fish and chips ready to cook later in the evening.

MarmitePizza · 21/07/2024 21:54

What time did you actually try to go, OP? I’m very surprised that any fish and chip shop would be closed every Saturday night, but the ones near where I live and also on the UK places we visit on holiday seem to close ridiculously early (like 7.30pm). Were you later that that?

I would say it’s quite normal to be closed on Sundays though.

Tradintionally, fish and chip shops had to close on a Monday because no fresh fish was landed on a Sunday

CeeJay81 · 21/07/2024 21:58

Thay sounds daft.
We have 2 shops(one just a takeaway, thenkther has a restaurant part too) owned by the same people. It's in a touristy area in Wales.

Betweeen 12 to 2.30pm and 5 to 9pm you will find at least one shop open. Friday and Saturday it would be 12 to 9 in Summer. Neither open on a Sunday in Winter but one is only open in the evening in Summer. They are also good at opening extra when there is an event on in town.

FalderalderaldoSittingintheWater · 21/07/2024 21:58

ElaineMBenes · 21/07/2024 19:50

The reason they aren't open on a Monday is tradition. The fishing boats wouldn't have gone out on a Sunday so there wouldn't have been fresh fish available.

Apologies, I should have read thread. I've just posted same thin!
Are you from a fishing area?

DelilahBucket · 21/07/2024 22:05

West Yorkshire here, 11:30-1:30 Wed-Sat, 4:30-6:30 Wed-Fri. As a result, the place has been closed down more than open in the ten years we've lived here because no one extends the opening hours.
