To ask when your local chippy is open?

Really random question I know but..

DH and I are away for a weekend in West Yorkshire. Had a lovely long walk yesterday and thought we'd have a chippy tea after. None of the chip shops we tried (about 4) were open. Nevermind, we said, we'll have them for Sunday lunch. A quick google revealed that all of them in the local area were closed both Saturday evening and all day Sunday. This is really unusual where we live (Midlands) and where DH is from (Glasgow-ish) But perhaps we are in a minority and most people are not having fish and chips on a Saturday night?!

That would only apply to chippys selling mainly fish. And ones on the coast. Most now sell loads more than just fish

They're not traditional fish and chip shops. They're takeaways.

I now live somewhere where traditional fish and chip shops are quite rare and people get their fish and chips from Chinese chippy's or takeaways that also do burgers, pizzas etc. they're often open all day and into the early hours. They're nowhere near as nice as a traditional chip shop though.

The traditional fish and chip shops in my home town still don't open Sundays, Mondays or Saturday tea time.

What chippy doesn't open Saturday evening! Isn't that like the busiest time!

Where I grew up Friday night was chippy tea night do that was the busiest day.
None of them opened on a Saturday tea time.

Well no, because the heritage of 'chippies' as opposed to takeaways lies with weekly paid manual workers who would be paid in cash on a Friday, so a pay day treat. Also 'fish fridays'. Saturday evening would be a lot quieter, because people had fish and chips yesterday.

This thread is about fish and chip shop opening times in West Yorkshire. Which may not reflect how things are done in other places, on in takeaways, ie places that cater for the Saturday night in front of the telly, or post pub trade.

Here is a picture I took of one of the local chippies I wanted to try, so I knew when it would be open.

Seeing as the title is ‘To ask when your local chippy is open?’ I don’t see the OP asking specifically about West Yorkshire unless I’ve misunderstood the post

I live in West Yorkshire and the family run fish and chip shops near me open for lunch and tea. To be fair I'd never think to get fish and chips late on in the evening or even a weekend, it's a Thursday or Friday thing for us!

Pogggle · 22/07/2024 09:08

I'm in Somerset and our local one is open 12-9pm 7 days a week

MrsDeaconClaybourne · 22/07/2024 09:08

I grew up in northern industrial town and Friday night as chippy tea is definitely something I recognise. Ones near me are still open on a Saturday evening though, just not as busy. I've just checked and my local one is also closed on a Sunday - I thought it was open for a bit in the afternoon.

Ours are closed Sunday and Monday, Saturday night seems an odd time for any takeaway to be closed!

savoycabbage · 22/07/2024 10:13

Legally, fish and chip shops aren’t allowed to sell fish on a Sunday. My DD’s first job was on a sunday night in a chippy and I remember us laughing that her first official job was breaking the law.

All our local chippers are open Saturday night but closed on Sundays.

In the town about 20min drive away, the local chippy has stopped selling fish!! I only discovered this by accident when returning from a day out and fancied a fish and chips car picnic for tea. They sell chicken and burgers etc. but no fish at all. 😳😳

Thing is, this is a town on the west coast of Ireland where every main town has a fresh fish shop with a good variety of freshly caught fish daily.

For a treat, I buy my chippy tea and then drive to one of the nice coastal spots to eat it watching the boats bobbing around etc.

Disturbia81 · 22/07/2024 10:39

Ours is thursday eve, friday eve and saturday dinner.
That's it! It's really good too. They must earn enough on those daya

Love going to the cities as they are open all day

queenmeadhbh · 22/07/2024 20:43

I’m really surprised at all these chippies closing in the afternoon. In Belfast they’re all open like midday to ten pm or something, some prob even later if they’re on a stretch near pubs!

FairviewRosie24 · 22/07/2024 20:53

Between 6.30 to 7.30 once every 3rd Saturday. Mobile chippy remote village.

S0livagant · 22/07/2024 20:56

Tuesday to Saturday lunch 12-2 and dinner 4:30-8:30

kwetu · 22/07/2024 20:58

West Midlands here, ours are all closed Sundays and many on Mondays too. Always fancy a chippie tea when it's closed!!

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 22/07/2024 21:01

I’m in West Yorkshire and we have two in our town, one is open lunchtimes only, the other “tea time” (so about 3pm-6pm) two days a week with no real consistency on the days and never the weekend. Apparently it’s fantastic but I’ve never been

BraveFacesEveryone · 22/07/2024 21:05

West Yorkshire here, and the answer is ‘whenever they feel like it’ as far as I can tell. In order of my preference of the three near us on Saturday they close at:
2pm (the nicest one)
7pm (the closest one)
9pm (the one we go to if the other two are closed)

DontCallMeKidDontCallMeBaby · 22/07/2024 21:07

The ‘proper’ fish and chip shop opens :
mon-thurs 4pm-8pms
fri 1130am-130pm / 4pm-8pm
sat 1130am-130pm.
The one that does kebabs, pizzas etc to is open: mon-sat 1130am-9pm.
Both are closed on Sundays.

HighlandCowbag · 22/07/2024 21:13

Chip shop across the road open 11.30am to 9pm, Monday to Saturday.

The best chippy a mile away is open we'd and Thurs teatime til about 8pm. Then Friday 12-2, 5 til 8pm and same on Saturday. It's worth having chippy for lunch on a Saturday then just a sarnie for tea tho, it's amazing.

I seem to think some chippies are open less to keep turnover below the VAT threshold? The nice one has queues out the door whenever it is open so probably needs to open less to avoid VAT. plus lower running costs. Even if it was open more often then costs would increase, staff and running costs. And might not actually take that much more, but then incur VAT so have to put prices up, then lose custom cos of that.
